We walked into Himalayan Kitchen on a whim one night, seeking something adventurous and new to fight off the winterish rain and cold. Now, be warned: the majority of the menu is not particularly«new». In fact, a good 70% of it is Indian food, which I could just have easily have gotten a half block from my home without having to trudge through the wind and the wet to this admittedly dinky little down-home restaurant.(Talk about an adventure :( Fortunately, the attentive server noticed my forlorn expression and immediately pointed out the Nepalese/Bhutan items on the menu, which were quite exotic to my untrained eye. Furthermore, they were CHEAP! Each entrée was only $ 8 – 10 per person! But most important of all, they were delish! My dumplings were melt-in-your-mouth buttery, and my dining partner’s goat was deliciously tender — almost like a crockpot beef roast. Perfect for a chilly Seattle evening. We left feeling warm and rejuvenated, perfectly relaxed from our trip up to the Himalayas :)

I had been verrrry curious about goat meat. I’m not a fan of lamb meat but I heard goat meat was more similar to beef. The restaurant seemed really big from the outside because it felt like there were so many windows and fake doors(you know the ones that have a sign that say«use the front door»). My friend and I ordered the potato naan and Nepali Thali(I think that’s what it was) last night. The meal started off with some nachos and this green dip that tasted somewhat spicy but was really addicting. The service was pretty decent because the boss lady(I assume) kept checking up on us and refilling our waters. The food came out kind of slow though and to be honest, I wasn’t a fan of some of the bowls that it came with. I think there were about five small bowls so that we could taste a little of everything. I enjoyed three out of five which is not bad, I guess. But I’ve decided that I don’t like goat meat and the curry sauce was mediocre. I liked the veggies and potatoes though. The dessert that was milk pudding or something was not to my liking at all. I didn’t enjoy the soup either =/so those two bowls were wasted. BUT the naan was very good and thinking back, the carbs were the best part. Potatoes, naan and rice. I don’t think one visit is enough to really determine if I like this restaurant but for now, 3 stars is my rating.

I finally tried out this little place down the street from me, and it was really good! It was a windy rainy night and stumbling in here half drenched was a real treat! They have both Indian and Nepali food, which is pretty impressive. The server was really great — when I was a little overwhelmed at the extensive menu she asked me what I liked and made several suggestions, describing each one in detail very patiently until she was sure I had made the right decision. Later I saw her doing the same thing with another customer who was in a similar quandary. It was reasonably priced and the service was excellent. I also liked that we didn’t get rushed out the minute we finished our food, they were on hand to take our plates/bring our bill if we wanted, but gave us the option of sitting and chatting for a while first. I’ll definitely be back!

When I was descending Mt Kangchenjunga in Nepal I asked my Sherpa, «Yo homey, is there a joint around here where I can get my grub on? Maybe in Khatmandu or Pokhara?» He replied, «You idiot American don’t you know the best Nepalese grub is in Seattle at Himalayan Kitchen». I said, «Great jumping Jehosaphat! Werd?» He said, «True that, son». Sherpas know they’re shit, so I came here once I got back home. I got the Khasi ko masu, a kind of goat meat on the bone dish. All it says on the menu is «mother’s recipe served with lentil soup», so I don’t exactly know the ingredients in the sauce, but let break it down for you… goat meat + mother’s recipe = crazy delicious! ! It’s one of those dishes where although there’s a billion other dishes on the menu, you’ll only get this one dish when you come here again and again. The lentil soup was very good too. Let me explain how good this was. I was thinking of that dish for the next few days it was so good. I took my friend’s 6 year old daughter to the Woodland Park Zoo. She wanted to go to the petting zoo. As soon as I saw that goat in there, I was in a trance. All I could think about was how in the hell can I sneak this damn goat out of the zoo and get it over to Himalayan Kitchen. And you know all those animals do in the petting zoo all day long is eat and kick back, so there was one in there that was nice and plump. I was so focused on that damn goat, I lost all track of the 6 year old. She could have been playing with a damn king cobra for all I cared. Also had the Mo Mos, which is like gyoza and a Yeti Beer. The bottle has picture of a yeti skipping up a mountain looking for beer. I thought that was pretty amusing. Our server was on top her game– water glasses full, periodically checking on us, take home containers in hand, splitting checks. One more thing, a warning to all you spice lightweights. When they say spicy, they mean it. Trust.

Om nom nom. I _love_this place. First ducked in last year on a whim, having previously eaten at the restaurant previously in this space. Now, whenever I’m in Seattle I eat here frequently. It’s run by a friendly family who take obvious pride in the food and delight in serving it. The menu is large and varied; I’ve arranged big-group dinners here and everyone can find plenty of delicious options — from vegetarians to carnivores, from chili pepper addicts to those whose eyes begin to water if they come within 50 feet of a single grain of hot spice, everyone’s catered for. Most dishes can be ordered with spice-heat level according to personal taste, and if you make it clear you want it really hot, they _will_comply. The Chinese dishes are probably well made, but I’ve never tried them; one can get Chinese food everywhere. I tend to gravitate towards the Nepali-Himalayan items. They really know how to work with lamb; the korma is a favourite of mine(and, this being the Northwest, the shrimp are fresh and delicious as a korma, as well). On a chilly night, it’s tough to beat the shyakpa, a hearty soup with big wheat noodles, beef, and vegetables. Eight bucks, I think it costs, or maybe eight-fifty, for a generous bowl. They offer a couple of different thali, which are complete meals with various yummy meat and vegetable items and dessert(usually very good rice pudding). The biryani is delightful, whichever variety you get. The momos, as another reviewer mentions, are excellent, though I would say get the chicken and/or vegetable ones rather than the rather less inspired beef ones. Garlic naan! They make awesome garlic naan. There’s ample street parking around, and the Ravenna location is a reasonably short distance from the University district, Wedgwood, and Green Lake. But seriously, it’s good enough to be worth the trek from farther afield. They have also another location up on Capital Hill called«India Express», with a smaller menu; when I’m in that area it’s on my short list.

First of all, they do not have delivery anymore. Not a big deal but, all the other reviews on here said that they had free delivery. We placed an order for take-out. The food was good– theres no question about that. However, they only had half the things that were listed on their menu. I ordered an appetizer; they didn’t have it. They said that they had a limited supply of paneer and that they were only using it for entrees. Okay. So, we got a different appetizer, not that big a deal. We also ordered homemade rice pudding for desert. When my dad went to

I am a total Momo fan. ask me to eat momo’s anytime & i am ready. My concern usually comes with the sauce/chutney that is served. Most of the places just serve soya sauce or something similar. But Himalayan Kitchen had a very nice spicy chutney along with the momo’s. I must say the combo of the Momo’s with the chutney was really nice. The portion was pretty good too. Nice simple place, i will be trying more food there. For now, for the Momo’s its a great place.

I recently had the Himalayan Kitchen prepare a feast for 20 — and their catering was as good as eating in the restaurant. Prompt, professional & extremely reasonably priced — they are a dream to work with. I recommend, your guest will LOVE the food @ your next party.

Went there once in August and then about a month later. The food was only okay, but I have a feeling that there’s potential for it to become great. The place was empty the first time I walked in, but the servers were wonderful and slowly more people came in for dinner. The second time was for lunch, which was good… but I found it a little odd that the lunch special came with coffee. I really didn’t want coffee at that time, so I got a mango lassi instead. It was okay, but not the best I’ve had. It’s in my neighborhood, so I’ll have to make sure to pay them another visit once they’ve been there a while and got all the new-biz kinks worked out.

I stopped in to this new neighborhood joint on Sunday and, first of all, Marki — great chart to explain the diversity of the menu. Off the start, we noticed that two groups came in while we were there who were coming in for their second visit. That made the staff smile. Prices are reasonable, portions are not huge(except for the fried rice — I saw it on a neighboring table. HUGE!) We like to take home leftovers for lunch and we wiped the plates clean with the terrific naan. No leftovers. Speaking of the naan; perfectly made, crispy and chewy. We had the chicken korma, the lamb with coconut curry and the Tibetan vegetable balls. We asked about how their«hotness» worked and the waitress said start with mild and add hot sauce. It was very mild. Start with medium.(Plus we never got the hot sauce.) The korma as good, the lamb was plate licking good. The vegetable balls were… well… interesting and a bit bland for my taste, but I’m glad I tried them. Homemade mango ice cream was a home run. I can see that between the naan and the ice cream I could be in trouble. Very gracious staff, still getting their sea legs with the restaurant. I’m looking forward to walking down for lunch — great prices. They are offering a sunday brunch buffet which we’l try and I’ll report back. For some reason, this spot has been tough for restaurant owners, with few lasting more than a year or two. I wish this crew good luck! We’ll be back — and ordering more spicy levels
