My experience here was absolutely terrible. It started as soon as I walked in the door. The place is dirty and looks like little more than a hole in the wall that has been expanded somewhat. The service I received was also abysmal… the person taking my order barely acknowledged my existence, let alone say«thank you.» He gave me my food by practically dropping it on the table and walking away. The food itself was just bad. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries, both of which were nearly dripping with grease. The fries were a poor serving for 3.00 as well. In addition, the restaurant is not arranged very well. I picked up an unmarked ketchup bottle thinking that it contained what it looks like it is supposed to contain, but instead it squirted out hot spicy sauce. I highly recommend you go elsewhere for lunch or dinner… this place is not worth the high cost, terrible service, and greasy food.

def one of the best bang-for-your-buck places in the U district def not the«best» fish n chips, but certainly ‘regular good’ Lady at the counter is awesome — in asian accent–«This ain’t no cheap chicken place!» Love her.

I always enjoy my food at Northwest Fish & Chips. My favorites are the standard fish and chips battered and the grilled salmon sandwich. The food is tasty, and the wait is usually only as long as it takes to fry or grill your fish.

$ 5 for a massive bacon cheeseburger + fries. What a deal. The burgers are freshly broiled/grilled. I’ve seen the owner/cook make the burgers there on the grill, made to order(no pre-cooked patties!) So they have the char-flavor and she cooks to your specifications(medium, well-done, etc.) and even though I get mine well, they’ve been juicy. They’re also generous with the lettuce and tomatoes, something so simple but something that I really appreciate. The fries are crispy and super hot!(Even when I got it togo once) Is it gourmet food? no Is it a great value and yummy? YES Also, a huge kicker for me: nice service. The woman who runs the show may look grumpy, but she’s super nice and if you talk to her. NOTE: Cannot comment on their name sake: fish & chips. Maybe I’ll give it a shot if I find an extra dollar on the street. =)

I had such a craving for fried shrimp that I knew I couldn’t psych myself out of it with a cheaper meal of anything else crunchy. I anticipated that even an inexpensive shrimp plate would be at least $ 13 even in casual dining. But Northwest Fish & Chips turned out to be the best choice on all levels! For slightly over $ 10, including a 16 oz drink and tax, I got a generous serving of butterflied prawns in a golden brown, perfectly crisp breading. The prawns came with french fries, a large and fresh wedge of lemon, and small containers of seafood sauce and tartar sauce. I can honestly say that I almost could not eat it all. Their prawn & chips hit the spot! At 5:30 on a weekday afternoon, the restaurant was pretty clean. Good customer service. It was not busy, so the food came out very quickly. The owner came out to clean tables and tidy up further and checked to make sure I was happy with the food. She was very pleasant.

Sometimes I just walk on the Ave and have a huge craving for a basket of fried fish. And this place gets the job done. 2 piece for $ 6? A great deal if you ask me. Fish portions have gotten a bit smaller over the past year, but it’s always surprisingly fresh and juicy. The thick beer batter you will not find here. Rather, it comes in a panko breadcrumb, which makes it crispy and flavorful. Big group? Get the platter special. $ 20 for 12 pieces! Feeds four ravenous souls easily. $ 5 Burger and fries? Cheap eats, and for the price of a Big Mac Extra Value Meal, you actually get real char-grilled burger cooked to order. My personal favorite: $ 7 for two fish tacos. Real fresh pico de gallo with grilled fish. Comes with fries and slaw. Don’t let the hole-in-the-wall fried fish place vibe get you, this is one seriously good fish taco. Best place ever? Well, don’t get that idea. But one of the best cheap eats if you’re at the U? You betcha. And say hi to the lady at the counter, she’s super nice.

Great addition to the Ave. Reasonable prices and portions, and they fry everything at a great temperature that leaves the food at the perfect crispiness. Because really, who doesn’t love crispy things? (And if you don’t want something crispy, their fish tacos are pretty good.)

I’d give a middle-of-the-road 2.5 stars if I could. I had cajun chicken & chips because the fish looked like a bread-crumb batter and I prefer beer batter. The chicken was not bad. Maybe a little overcooked and the cajun rub was a little odd but still tasty. The fries were crispy, done right. Not too soggy, not burnt. Not too thick, not too thin. Overall it was a pretty average meal. I only went in because most of the ethnic places were closed on Sunday. I thought they were a little on the pricey side(about $ 9 for four chicken strips and fries). They had hushpuppies too. All hushpuppies are nasty. I probably won’t be back because of the abundance of other good food in the area. They have some stiff competition and I don’t think they’re quite up to the challenge.

Decent fish and chips for the right price. I won’t say that I was wowed, but the fried cod had the right amount of batter, the fries were crispy, and bonus hush puppies are always welcome. The batter and fries were both under-seasoned, but the fish and chips come with tartar and a lemon, and there’s malt vinegar on the tables. The menu is broad enough that I wouldn’t mind trying a few more permutations of fish+hot oil. The floor was a little sticky and the table felt like it, too, had picked up a bit of residue from the fryer. That is either sort of awesome(how authentic!) or sort of gross. As with most Ave restaurants, it’s better to compare this one to other restaurants along the Ave than it is to think of it as a place to visit from across town. Northwest Fish and Chips isn’t anything wildly exciting, but it does provide a nice alternative to its neighbors.

Pretty good, for the Ave. It’s fried and salty — not exactly healthy — but can hit the spot. The base prices are a bit high but there’s a good amount of food and there are often specials, plus there’s a punch-card if you eat there frequently. I’ve only tried the fish and chips and chowder, but both were good. The hush puppies were a nice touch. The couple of times I’ve been here, it’s been pretty empty, so it was a bit awkward to sit and eat.

I usually prefer my fish raw… but every once in awhile«fish and chips» sounds good. I’ve eaten here a couple times, but never really enjoyed it. I was ecstatic when I first walked in and saw hush puppies on the menu, and they’re really not so bad, though they are still a far cry from real southern hush puppies. The fish isn’t terrible, and it is so, so much better(less greasy) than it had been when they first opened. Still, there are far better places out there for real fish and chips.

I’ve come here twice for lunch now and both times been pleased. There’s nothing interesting, different or special about this place other than its clean, has a ton of bottled drinks to choose from, and has pretty good battered food. I’ve had better, but I’ve also had worse. The prices are decent, as you do get a pretty good amount of food. My friend ordered the fish tacos, and got two tacos, lots fries, cole slaw, and two round battered almost corn-bread-like things(I can’t remember what they were actually called). Plus you get sides of salsa, ketchup and sea salt vinegar. I have one suggestion: get the garlic fries. They are drenched in garlic and seasonings and are perfect if your looking to spoil yourself with a greasy garlic treat.

One time I had a religious experience thanks to some fish and chips in Hawaii. That experience hasn’t been matched yet but some places have come closer than others. Northwest Fish and Chips fell especially far from the mark. I tried the(Cajun) fish and chips with a side of clam chowder, which was a deal at the time when they first opened. I was hungry and anticipating all the food I was getting. Cue disappointment, nausea and vow of non-return.

The only reason I go here is because it takes the Husky Card from the UW. If I wasn’t paying with pseudo-money, I would never pay for the expensive food from this place. The food itself is good, but not outstanding in any manner. The staff is very polite and quick at taking orders, preparing food, and ensuring the cleanliness of the establishment. If you have extra money on your Husky Card and want something fried, this is definitely the place to come.

The woman at the counter was nice and she was good about cleaning the tables right after customers left. I managed to grab the table next to the window, which provided me with great light for getting my class reading done.(A girl sitting deep in the restaurant was also reading, however, so I guess the light there was also enough.) I was thinking fish & chips, but when I saw calamari & chips on the menu I decided to give it a go. The food and a vitamin water(jackfruit+guava– never seen that one before!) ended up costing me about $ 10. So… doesn’t really fit into the«super wonderfully cheap eats in the U-district» list. The fries were alright but nothing interesting. The calamari was okay, but I’m not a big fan of fried things(except the fried ice cream at some japanese joints!) so I wasn’t super excited about it. Over-all it was a decent experience and more of a 3.5, but I have no plans to return so I figure 3 stars is more accurate(than 4).

I usually get the two piece breaded fish and chips, sometimes with Cajun spices. For an extra dollar, you can get your fish battered instead of breaded. The one time I tried this, I… think they accidentally used pancake batter. It was a little unexpected. I’ll stick to the breaded stuff for now, I think; I can always go down to Mr. Lu’s if I want battered fish. Other than that, no complaints. Service is friendly. The fries and hush puppies are fine. I haven’t tried any of the non-fried stuff, but they do offer a bunch of salads etc. as well.

Northwest Fish & Chips is not a destination spot for Seattle people looking for fish and chips but is a good stop for f&c f you are in the University District. It is not the only place to find fish and chips in the U-District(Finn McCool’s has them) but it is the only restaurant in the area where one can find a wide variety of seafood. Upon opening, the prices at NW F&C were a bit high but they have lowered some while also offering specials. The fresh, grilled salmon is very good and the fish and chips are very filling. The 2 piece fish & chips is a generous amount of food for a good price. The interior of Northwest Fish & Chips is bright and clean. The service is always prompt, sometimes too much so, they should allow patrons tmore time to scan the many items on the menu. I wouldn’t call the staff pleasant but they are friendly enough and the orders are filled quickly.

I’ve only been to Northwest Fish & Chips once with a couple of my guy friends for lunch in the summer. It is the only Fish & Chips store on University Way. We ordered 2 orders of fish and chips(4 pieces i think), and we were full. The portions really fill you, and for like 8 bucks(with the survival kit coupon) for 3 people … that’s pretty good… at least for a poor college student. The only thing was the tartar sauce was a little bland. Each of the fish pieces were pretty big, so that was always the good part. Their hushpuppies were alright.

Try to guess what this place serves… Go on. If you guessed … «and chips», you get a fishy! The menu includes standard fish and chips, cajun fish and chips(i.e. the standard with cajun seasoning sprinkled on top), halibut, catfish, chicken, scallops, prawns, popcorn shrimp, oysters, calamari, clams all«and chips». Oddly enough, the fish tacos and burger are listed as «and fries»… go figure. I love living in a city where I can generally trust a fast food fish joint not to kill me. The fish here was flaky, the breading crispy and none of it smelled foul. The fillets are quite sizable. A 2 piece order should more than fill you up. I ended up leaving most of my chips in the basket, because I was full. I will leave the tartar sauce review to our resident expert, Michelle B. However, I must say that the hush-puppies tasted a bit funky and not in a George Clinton sort of way. So, if you’re in the U-District with a craving for«…and chips» but don’t have the time or energy to sit down at Finn’s, stop in at Northwest Fish & Chips.

It was solid fish and chips. The price was good for the amount of food, but the fish didnt have a whole lot of flavor. I used all my lemon and even salted them, I was hoping for a little more savoryness overall. The hushpuppies were good though, and the service was great. Its a nice brand new clean location and very friendly. Next time I’ll try something with a little spice and see if its got more flavor to savor.
