I actually really like Emerald City! As a person who generally tries to avoid Fish & Chips(oily food usually makes me feel sluggish and depressed afterwards for intaking too much oil and calories into my body), I have to say I was happy with the meal I got! :) Both gentlemen at the store were nice and friendly. They were polite, didn’t fuss when I showed them the coupon for discount and even offered water for me while I wait for them to cook my food to go. The shrimp po-boy I had was just the right size. It wasn’t too small nor too big that you don’t feel sluggish after eating. They also allowed me to substitute regular fries with sweet potato fries, which I really appreciated, too. I also appreciated that when I ordered a shrimp po-boy sandwich and sweet potato fries, a gentleman at the cashier told me that the sandwich can come with fries, too and asked me to help clarify if I wanted an additional order(based on my order). The food took ~ 5 min wait time and I was a happy camper after eating my food. They fried the shrimps and sweet potato fries just for my the food was nice and hot when I got them. I was actually surprised the fries and the poboy didn’t taste oily at all. I also appreciate that they wrapped the sandwich, a side of slaw and the food so nicely in my to-go package, too. P. S. Checking in on Unilocal gets you 10% off your order… although. I have to say, even without discount, the price was super reasonable(~$ 9 for a shrimp poboy sandwich with chips and slaw)

Nothing to complain about here. My 2-piece cod & chips with slaw was a nice sized portion at a fair price and very delicious to boot. After trying a number of places around Ballard where they overcharge for a single piece order, I would rather come down here when I am in this neighborhood. I appreciate good food and good value, and this place doesn’t disappoint.

Gluten free fish and chips? Oh yes, and if you’re not gluten free you won’t care because the fish and chips are that good. Unlike the typical N. W. Beer batter these fish and chips are coated in a corn meal. They are light on grease and long on flavor. Great customer service. Worth a stop.

So far one of the best joints to get quality seafood in Seattle! The salmon burger is awesome! I highly recommend this place!

WOW! These fish and chips are seriously unique. The corn bread battering infused with spices creates a Southern-fish fried delight. The prices were super reasonable, and the man who helped us looked like he was having a great time. He was so friendly and checked in with us multiple times. Love eating at places with excellent food made by people who love making it!

Really great to try another locally owned business. Rodney is a great guy who also grew up in the area; CD and not south end though(inside joke). The fries are nice, slaw is good and not over dressed, the salmon chowder is really tasty, the prawns are solid, but the cod needs a bit of work. I think the double dip method might work better to keep the cornmeal batter attached to the fish. Also I think the oil could be a bit hotter to get a better crunch on the cornmeal. Oh the spicy tartar is also unique. We’ll probably be back to try some other things or get more chowder. Hope the batter improves!

This place has been around for years and if you haven’t stopped in then you are missing out on a hidden gem. The fish and chips are always fresh and the prices are dirt cheap for this genre of food. I love the crab hush puppies which are loaded with crab meat and the catfish is great.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about at emerald city… i had the halibut and chips and my boyfriend tried the salmon and chips. The service was mediocre, the man at the register was very distracted and wasn’t very helpful when I was asking him questions about the menu. The fish was just okay and I sincerely hated the thick, crusty breading on the fish. The fish pieces were rather small as well. I am glad I bought a restaurant certicficate, because I would have been even more disappointed had I paid full price. I Will stick to dukes or my local trader joes for better fish and chips.

Ambience. B+ Service. A Food. B Price. A Very clean. Seats 6 inside and picnic table outside. Service was very friendly and also gave me a taste of their gumbo. Very quick when not busy. They honored my $ 10 voucher. That was nice. Just show the phone with voucher and validate. Housemade gumbo $ 5/sm. filled with shredded crab and whole small shrimps. Nice seafood flavors. I wouldn’t add more salt. This was a special offered only mon– tues. The 2 piece catfish $ 6.25 with fries and cole slaw. There is a distinct catfish flavor with the catfish. Dip it in their Housemade remoulade to mask the flavor. There’s a nice thin cornmeal batter nicely fried. Ordered 3 oysters. $ 4.50. Since I ordered the combo for the catfish. Oysters were nice and plump and today’s oyster were really distinct in a heavy oyster taste. I will come back and get the cod next time.

The food here is so fresh and so good — its a small place on the corner of a little shopping complex in a part of town that isn’t full of tourists. The owners are amazing, not only do they make the best fish and chips we’ve ever had they are super chill and have a great personality, one you can tell they love what they do. We ordered the salmon fish and chips, the halibut fish and chips and a side order of prawns. Everything was amazing, and served with a side of cole slaw — it had peppers in it green and red bells I want to say and a light dressing that kept the cabbage crisp. Why here? They don’t have a million things on the menu, they do fried fish just right and with a smile! Oohhh and need I mention the TIMMYLINCECUM hat signed and hanging in the restaurant?! Not sure if they’re GIants fans but they know and appreciate a good local boy(Bellevue, WA) with exceptional talent! Thank you for exceptional food, and service Emerald City — we will be back every time we’re in Seattle.

Dayamn! This fish and chips is GOOD! I don’t eat a lot of fried food because it doesn’t typically agree with me. But their fish is fried perfectly. Light, cooked to perfection. They use fresh fish that they season and batter, then freeze — so it’s fresher than a lot you’ll see anywhere else, already. The breading they use is also dairy-free and gluten-free. BOOYAH. And BONUS… it’s SUPERDELICIOUS. They have sweet potato fries as an option, for you yam loving folks out there, too. Super win. I’m gonna need to move further away so I don’t get fat. lol.

AMAZING! This food is fantastic!!! We had the salmon chowder and the fish and chips and it was poetry on the palette. The fish was authentic and had that fresh texture to it and the salmon chowder clearly has some sort of magic ingredient that makes me ignore my stomach alerting me that it’s full. Folks, this is where to get your tasty seafood at awesome prices. You can pay double at some fancy joint or in the tourist areas and it won’t stack up to this gem. Service you ask? Also awesome. The staff are happy to greet and interact with you. They have a magical way of making you feel welcome and special, something lacking in the restaurant industry. Best of all they were authentic people who care for your experience. Super duper place!!!

This place easily beats Ivar’s in every single element of fish and chips. Fish pieces are coated in the perfect amount of well-seasoned batter. They have a nice crunchy crust and firm steamy interior. Then fries that come with the fish pieces are also perfectly seasoned. I would rank the fries up on my list alongside McDonald’s. Delicious tartar sauce and slaw. Together with the fish and chips, they make the perfect accompaniment. On top of that, this place has warm and friendly service by the owner. Bottom line: excellent fish and chips. Come try it out yourself.

Eh this place was just alright for me. I’m not sure if it’s because I ordered my food to go and ate it like half an hour later so it wasn’t as fresh? But that’s not really the issue, I ordered the clam strips — first of all, I felt like I got bopped! I barely got strips, I got crumbs! Secondly, it was a bit burnt and lastly there wasn’t a lot at all. I also ordered the catfish and that was okay, although parts of it seemed a bit undercooked. The fries were coo tho, it was lightly seasoned so it wasn’t bland. I did enjoy their tartar sauce tho. Overall, I’d still pick Ivars over this. But it was nice to try something somewhat different and local. I do like to support small businesses out here! :) I will come back to try the oysters. Mmm.

For me, it’s the best fish and chips in Seattle. I other places I pay extra for halibut, but the cod here is fresh and tasty. I prefer battered fish to the panko-crusted style here in the PNW. But the breading here is just right. Not too thick and well seasoned. The fries are good, can’t say much more because my standard practice with F&C is I pretty much drown them in malt vinegar. The tartar sauce is very nice, good heat and flavor, but I’m more of a malt vinegar guy, and they have regular and a garlic. And the staff is always really friendly. The only thing I might knock would be the cole slaw, however I pretty much hate everyone’s slaw so I’m not deducting here. It does seem healthier in that it doesn’t use mayo. I haven’t tried the crabpuppies because I know what I want when I go here and that’s some great fish and chips!

Ma and Pa. Love it. Home style fried foods, ready to go in a few minutes. I’ve been here a few times to pick up a quick eat. I’ve had better fried fish elsewhere, but for a neighborhood joint and the prices i’m digging what is offered. I’m not sure but the fish might be pre– breaded and frozen then re-fried. It makes some of the fish a bit juicy. I’ve had the catfish, halibut and cod. The catfish is probably the best out of the three. It’s quick and easy, except parking is a bit difficult to maneuver for. Overall I think this is a great place to go grab a quickie and support a local business owner.

This was my first time eating here. I ordered 2 pc cod fish and chips and 6 pc prawn and chips along with a small chowder, which was salmon chowder for the day. The cod pieces were overdone and unusually small. The prawn was better but was just okay. The fries were too salty which I didn’t expect at all. I really liked the chowder though, and they included oyster crackers which is really nice. Each seafood order includes a small serving of coleslaw, but I wasn’t really a fan of it because I felt like it was too plain. Even the tartar sauce was a bit odd for me. I really love fish and chips too, it’s one of my favorite foods and i was so sad that I didn’t really enjoy this meal. So I was really excited to try this place but I ended up disappointed. Maybe it was just an off day, and maybe I could try it again right when the shop opens or lunch time or something, but I feel the fish wasn’t fresh or impressive. I feel like fish and chips that you would order at the food court would be a step up from this, which I really hate to say. I really want to try again because other reviewers seem really fond of this place and I’d be really happy if it became my local fish and chips shop that was both delicious and cheap. If I order again I’ll definitely update this review but until then I’ll just feel sad that it wasn’t that good. He gave a buy 6, get 7th free card which is something to consider for those of you interested!
