Cheap prices so I guess I can’t really complain that the fruit look like they are going to go bad soon. However I think it’s unacceptable to be selling molded fruit. I bought a bag of grapes today that looked ok when I looked at the bag, but once I opened it, I found a lot of it had molded… I couldn’t eat any of it since mold spores could’ve gotten the ones that look clean.

The pros: –This is actually a Chinese supermarket! Many of the ones in the International District are Vietnamese or Japanese so I like that this one is Chinese. –It’s in the heart of Chinatown unlike most of the other stores. Convenient if I’m picking something up after dinner. –Fairly fresh produce. The cons: –Its in the heart of Chinatown with no parking lot which means unless I’m eating here, I don’t want to battle it out for parking. –It’s smaller than most of the other grocery stores in the International District so between these two cons, its hard to will myself to come out this way when I could shop in Little Saigon. I used to come here a lot more when I worked in Chinatown proper. 3.5 stars– worth it… when I’m in the area.

I come here every week to get my gai lan, choy sum, bok choy, and green onions. I also get their whole free-range chicken for congee and soup. If you ask, they’ll chop up the chicken for you. The people that work here are friendly and have on multiple occasions helped me decipher the Chinese writing on unfamiliar ingredient and noodle packages.

Supermarkets are something I never review but I go here often and there’s only one other review on here so I’ll put in my 2 cents. Dong Sing is your typical Chinatown grocery store where the selection is more limited, but sufficient. For the mos part, the vegetables are fresh and so is the fruit. While most of the meat is fresh, I tend to avoid the beef short ribs. They also sell fish in the back. What I like about this place is that it has the essentials for a Chinese meal that sometimes I cannot find at Western markets such as Safeway and QFC. The pricing is a tiny bit higher than some other grocery markets in that area but only by a little. Regardless, I still shop here instead of other places like Viet Wah or Uwajimaya because the prices are similar and I prefer supporting a smaller, local business.

The business located at the following address is Dong Sing Market, not to be confused with Dong Hing Market. Dong Hing is listed here on Unilocal, but it is actually located at 1001 S Jackson St. which is about three blocks from Dong Sing. The weird thing about this, is that this store used to be called Dong Hing Market several years ago. Got that? I wonder why each store decided on such similar names because it is confusing to Unilocalers. Dong Sing is actually not very big, but it is one market located in the heart of Chinatown/I-District. Produce is piled high on the street for your perusal. Inside the market you will find groceries like you would find at Dong Hing or Hau Hau or Hop Thanh, but they carry a smaller selection due to limited size. They do have a meat and fish counter in the back however. I have found the prices here to be slightly higher than a few of their I-District counterparts, but still better than at a traditional supermarket. Overall, Dong Sing Market is decent and the location makes it worth a visit.
