We were in town for my daughter’s chemo at MD Anderson, and a dear friend recommended Tookie’s. OH. MY. GOSH. We shared the Squealer(based on Unilocal reviews), what an amazing, JUICY hamburger! I asked for medium rare, and it was perfection. And the onion rings? To die for. Can’t recommend Tookie’s strongly enough!

Really don’t get what the rave is about. I kept hearing about how good it was so I decided to try it. The burger barely had any seasoning on it, barely any salt. I thought I would order it again just in case the first time was a fluke. The second time I ordered a burger and the blackened chicken and both were not good. The burger was barely seasoned with not much flavor and there blackened chicken was barely blackened and very soggy. Tried a third time and got a burger and this one wasnt good either. Whataburger tastes better! Sorry but this is not the place for me.

Honestly burgers are okay at best. Solid onion rings, batter isn’t to heavy, good fries and decent milk shake.

Best burger place I’ve been to in a long time! My fiancé and I came when it was packed, and we got seated quickly. We got the Tookie burger, Chili cheese burger, fried pickes, fries, fried mushrooms, and onion rings. Everything was awesome! The onion rings were perfectly battered and cooked, and the fried mushrooms were sliced so they weren’t too watery. I will definitely be back!

If you are a hamburger aficionado, you MUST try Tookies! They have been around since 1972 and there is a crowd on the weekends so be prepared to wait in line… I always get the Squealer burger– it’s ground beef with bacon ground into the meat– get Swiss and sautéed shrooms and you will be in hamburger heaven! I’ve tried their blackened grilled chicken sandwich — dressed the same way– and it was delicious as well. You can order a basket of fries or GINORMOUS onion rings to go with your burger. Don’t forget to try the fried jalapeños as an appetizer– OMG, the bomb diggity!

I had lunch here last weekend. Walking in, I immediately liked the character of this established burger joint. It has that homey feel to it that you won’t find in a chain restaurant. It’s a place that locals go to eat. I ordered a double burger with an order of fries and onion rings in a ½ and ½ ratio. The food arrived about 10 – 15 minutes later. The first thing I noticed were those big onion rings. They not only looked very good but they tasted the same too. Perfectly fried they were yummy. The French fries were a little of a disappointment. For being such a popular burger place and having such good onion rings I don’t understand why the fries were very basic. Definitely get the rings before the fries. The burger was a large nice looking one. I enjoyed it. It had good taste and flavor. However, the double patties were a little too much meat for me. Next time I would order just one patty. And get just the rings. The burger was a 3.5, the rings were a 4.5 and the fries a 3. Table service was very good(4). I am giving a 4 overall because of value. Yes the food was good however I was pleased with the portion sizes for the $. I would be happy to return.

Note: Being that there are hundred’s of reviews mainly about the food, this review will focus a little more about the experience and service that a party of 12 Unilocalers arrived too. This was a UYE(Unofficial Unilocal Event) hosted by Mike M. It was a dark and stormy night, there wasn’t a soul around but the howling wind to welcome me… wait, wrong story. It was a bright sunny day with lots of people rummaging around with their foods and enjoying the nice weather we’ve had for a while without the rain that hemmed everybody in for a while. Welcome to Tookie’s Hamburgers where even if they mess up your order, the attitude of the whole staff, the price and curiosity tugging fixtures will allow you to forgive any shortfalls. We were a table of about a dozen, not just a dozen, a dirty dozen, not even that, a dirty Unilocal dozen. We were guilty of being the ones to brave to see what everybody was talking about from far away in light of where a lot of us lived. There were a few of us that have been here before but we had to make sure it wasn’t just a lure. A lure it was not and everybody left either content or willing to make a second visit even if things didn’t go all the way right, it’s hard to please a whole table of Unilocalers and they did a marvelous job. It can be busy at times and you might have to wait for a few minutes but this will give you a chance to look at the menu that presented you with about half a dozen burger options as well as a chicken sandwich, turkey or black bean burger. I had the burger that had the garlic infused somewhere in there with a fried mushroom/onion ring combo. The fried mushrooms are made in-house(sorry Sysco) as well as the onion rings. Let me tell you about the onion rights, if you read the other reviews, they are HUGE, I have pictures where I easily slid both of my rist through them with a picture, unique in a sense. The flavor of everything was decent, it didn’t jump out as surprising to me but there is another factor that still brought everything up to a 4-star status. SERVICE, the kind that you get at a corporate, franchise well trained just opened chained but without the cookie cutter«Hi my name is ____, I will be serving you, the special today is…» You know the routine. Take that and transplant that to a… of all places, a burger joint! We had the luck of having Jessica as our server(kudos Jessy!) and you could tell that most of the other servers walking around seemed to have about the same caliber as well. We had an order for our table kind of not what she ordered and get this, the manager came around and without making any excuses or blaming what happened on something else, apologized to one of our people, offered a discount even without asking and said that she was going to get it done right 911. This jaw dropped everybody at the table because you just don’t get this all around service and treatment at any burger joint that I can remember. This will be remembered by all of us and hopefully, you get that treatment too. The prices of everything off of the menu you could say is about a dollar or two less than any Hamburger place that you go. From the appetizers and the burgers you really won’t go wrong even if things didn’t go your way AND you will plan on returning to give more chances. Everybody else reviews pretty much sums it up the same. Parking is a little stretched out and scarce on busy moments but that’s the norm around here. Alcohol(draft and spirits) are served here as well as Margarita type drinks. The restrooms are in decent shape but my only whim is no paper towel(blow dryer) in the restroom so you’re stranded inside until somebody comes in and opens the door.(Don’t tell me you’re going to open that nasty door with your fingers right after you’ve allegedly washed them right? Thank you Jessica and management for making out experience an above average one, it was worth driving 45 miles from the Northside for this visit. Bookmarked and noted for a return someday.

Love this place! If you’re ever in the area, you’ve got to check it out! 5 out of 5 stars! I got their classic cheeseburger. And it was just simply amazing. My dad isn’t a burger person so I was kind of worried he wasn’t going to like it. But he loved it. We’re going this weekend!(:

I’ve driven by this place hundreds of times, because it’s been there for ever. This week I ventured in for lunch. I got the BBQ burger. Cheese, pickles, huge thick cut onion ring topped with BBQ sauce. Everything was great except the sauce. It was thin and just overpowered the taste of everything. I wish I had gotten it on the side. I know for next time I guess. Fries were good as was the service.

Burgers were great! We had the Squealer and the BBQ Burger both were delicious; and our waiter was super friendly and on his A game. The tator tots were alright, but next time will try the onion rings! Left Tookie’s feeling stuffed! We will definitely be back.

The burgers are pretty good, but not something I have to come back for. Pelican eggs were hot and bursting with cheese, bacon, and spice(warning: a burned tongue may ensue), and onion rings are huge, thick, and crispy just how I like it. Service is super friendly and very fast and efficient. Getting there is a bit troublesome, as(where we came from) you’d need to make a U-turn. Also looks like they’re preparing to move into a much larger location just down the road; I’ll be back to try it out!

Tookie’s is such a burger staple for us! Just a little divey restaurant to grab a beer & a burger, always hits the spot! Tookie’s has been rocking since 75′ and I think they are here to stay! Stopped in today for lunch with my hubby. Started with an ice tea and he opted for a cherry coke– tons of flavors to add to your sodas. We also started with the pelican eggs– fried jalapeños stuff with cheese & bacon, served with ranch– YUM! For entrees I ordered the Tookie’s Dogs– I always go with the«old» chili, the Shiner chili is a little too tomato based for me. Hubby had the cheeseburger– if you are looking for a smaller burger, go with the Rookie. We always bring half home of the regular burgers, the portions are large! Also had the tots & fries combo and always add the cheese on the side! Service was great. I must say service here is usually good, I’ve had a time or two where it’s been bad, but overall the waitstaff is great. Drinks never went dry and food came out promptly and right! Plenty of parking around the side and back. Again– it’s divey which we love. Best burgers in the area!

This is only my second time at tookies but both times I enjoyed my food and experience. Today I went with a group of coworkers and by the pics you can tell we went hungry. We started off with the pelican eggs-(jalepeno poppers) and I failed to take photos before they disappeared. I had the pleasure of eating the #99 somewhat classic style burger but they marinate it in wine. Its juicy and has the perfect amount of seasoning. Everyone in the group enjoyed their burgers to the last bite. Onion rings are ginormous but not greasy or overly seasoned. Perfection. Our waitress was sweet and petite. She checked on us several times and kept our drinks filled. I look forward to my next visit.

Best burgers this side of town! We have been several times and I recommended this place to my mother before she went on a cruise. Well her and a friend ate here once loved it so much they went back the next day. Onion rings — big, crispy, and tasty. Definitely, the side to order. Burgers — we have tried them all and everyone is yummy. It all depends on your mood and what toppings you like. I get the 99. The double patties are huge and hard to finish. The service is good here, our drinks stay filled and food comes out quickly. Great casual place that serves amazing burgers.

The onion rings are fantastic! They are huge! They are breaded perfectly. The onions are sweet and the breading stays on throughout the entire delicious eating experience. I ordered the Squealer! How can a burger with bacon ground into it be bad? It can’t! It was delicious! Very juicy with all the right toppings. The place was very busy, but the waitress always checked on us and made sure we were doing good… and we were!

We came for lunch today based on reviews. We were seated promptly outside. It was a beautiful day. The menu consists of a variety of burgers and more. My husband ordered the #99 champion burger. I got the fish sandwich(blackened, with provolone cheese added). We also got one order of their specialty large onion rings. Wait time for food was about 15 minutes. It was pretty busy for Christmas Eve eve(23rd). The onion rings were cooked to perfection. Huge! Very crunchy and great with ketchup. My fish sandwich was excellent. Fish was cooked right and tender. I enjoyed it and finished it fast. My husband wasn’t crazy about his #99 burger. He said it was good. He did finish it. But just said it didn’t blow his mind away. After the sandwich/burger we were so full that we forced ourselves to eat the onion rings. Thankfully we got only one order of it. I suggest sharing it. It’s enough for 3 – 4 people. Overall great experience. Good food, nice atmosphere, great portion at reasonable prices, fun time, good service. Thumbs up.
