Stopped here on a wet afternoon for a quick bite and coffee. Bought a $ 5 cup of lousy soup. Yuk. Recipe might be «open can of tomatoes, add eggplant and water, simmer. Very sour, unbalanced and dull. Next time I need a little soup I’ll try a bar. disinterested barista could not put heavy cream in coffee, so I skipped it in favor of Starbucks.

This is tough. As a roaster, Uncommon Grounds is a 4+ star operation. One of the great reasons why a roaster would want to operate a coffee shop is so that it has a chance to expertly brew its beans and show off how good they can taste. Then, customers will fall in love with the coffee, and start buying it by the pound every week. That’s the model. I’ve tried this with some of my favorite coffee places around the country, and the problem has always been that I can never make coffee as good at home as I’ve gotten in the coffee shop. The opposite is true at UG. When I try the coffee that’s brewed on site, it’s nothing special. It’s only when I bring it home, grind it, and brew it using the pour over method do these beans shine. And don’t even get me started on their espresso program. Of course, it’s a great place to hang out, and get some work done while in town. The patio is nice when the weather is pleasant and the people watching plentiful. But UG has so much potential it kills me. Hopefully soon its brewing will catch up to its roasting, and its roasting will continue to improve on itself. I can see a future where UG is a 5* coffee place. It just has to decide that’s what it wants to be.
