Great little Chinese Bakery on Taraval. The pork buns here are great, they have really stepped them up a notch in the past few months. The prices are very reasonable($ 0.60 for a cookie, $ 1.30 for a pork bun) so this makes it a great place to stop by if you’re in the area. My only complaint is that I feel the cookies are a little bit over baked and could do a few less minutes in the oven.

I been coming here for pies, cakes and pastries because it is convenient for me. The Egg Custards are very good and so are the cakes. I buy cakes here for Birthdays and they are very moist inside and not overly sweet. I also like the apple strudels. People are correct about the buns not being hot. You have to remember that you can zap it in the micro when you get home or tell them to zap it for you there. When you leave it too warm in the glass oven it dries up the buns and it won’t taste fresh.

Went here yesterday. Ordered a pastry. Good thing I didn’t sink my teeth into it because there was MOLDATTHEBOTTOM of the pastry! Took it back and exchanged it for a pork bun. Tasted horrible. I’ve had better. In fact, this place used to be better until there was a change in ownership. The shop is also dirty and dingy and smelly. You’ve been warned.

*NEWMANAGEMENT* I was a regular for over 10 years and always liked the fresh pineapple, bbq, ham egg, cream buns, amongst all the wonderful selections until the new management took over and now their buns are not good. I recently ordered 3 ham and cheese buns and each bread was stale. On closer inspection, a big gaping hole was on each side of the bun, where they had extracted the old coconut shred filling to refill with half a slice of ham and cheese. The new owner miserably attempted to pass these off for fresh ham and cheese buns. In all my years of ordering buns I have never encountered this before.

We lived in West Portal for 10 years and were regulars here. Always bringing home pork buns for my three boys. We moved to the Peninsula 4 years ago and since then, whenever I am on the west side, I stop in and usually get 3 boxes of 10. I drop them at the boys schools or share them with friends and everyone has always loved them. I went in today and bought 3 that were not even close. Forget about being special — they weren’t even good. The bread was tough and dry. The meat was odd. I only gave my personal historical perspective in the hope that the new owners can see what Victor’s once was and maybe strive for that. Hopefully, JG

Bbq porn bun was ok. Not warm enough. I never tried it before the new management but I have to say the egg tarts here are not that great. I’ve definitely tried much better. I didn’t experience bad customer service. Giving it three stars because it’s In a good location and ok variety.

It pains me to give this place two stars because I used to think this was the best Chinese bakery in SF. However, as of about a month ago, they are under new management, and it seems the only thing that is the same is the name of the business. Their buns used to be deliciously light and chewy, and a fresh one out of the oven would just melt in my mouth. I’ve given the new Victor’s Bakery three chances, and two out of three times resulted in me tossing the bun away. The new ones are incredibly dry, often burnt, and oddly dense. Their new staff is friendly, but a bakery can’t survive on customer service alone. This bakery is in a prime location, and it’s easy to pop in here for a quick breakfast before hopping on the L, but unless their food improves, the convenience is not going to be enough to keep this place alive.

I used to buy their chocolate rolls all the time. But today when I ordered one, it looked unusually small. I realized afterwards that they cut off a slice from each roll now, so you get less for the same price. And they sell the rolls by the slice so they’re making money off the slice that they took from me. Not cool. I won’t be buying more unless they stop cheating their loyal customers.

Victor’s is three doors up from my dentist… which means after every teeth cleaning my brother and I go grab some buns to chow on. This place is still refreshingly old school. Cheap pineapple buns, cocktail buns, pork buns, hot dog buns — everything we would eat after any given day at Chinese school in Chinatown, done just as well as all the other Chinese bakeries of my childhood. Now that we don’t go to Chinatown anymore, it’s great that there’s a Chinese bakery close by that isn’t trying to do the whole dim sum, donuts, and buns thing. A lot of other Chinese bakeries seem to either have closed down or gone that donut-selling route. I’m so glad Victor’s hasn’t.

I have to give this place five stars hands-down because the buns are absolutely killer. I had exactly a half an hour for a lunch break and I walked five blocks to Victor’s bakery. I had a barbecue pork bun, a ham and cheese bun, and best of all, a curry beef bun. They are the best times I’ve ever had.

My husband has been stopping in this place for years. We stopped in on our way back thru SF last week. Had the BBQ Pork Bun, the Chicken bun and the egg custard. Prices are ridiculously cheap! Kind of weird though having to order while the woman was on the phone. Also, not to thrilled about the lack of cleanliness here. But, for the prices… hard to beat!

The serious lack of customer service at Victor’s Bakery left a bad taste in my mouth. Recently I went there to order a milk tea. I had placed $ 1.20 on the counter as payment. The cashier who was a young woman rudely stated, «Milk tea costs $ 2.00. TWOZEROZERO» and jabbed her finger at the Macau Milk Tea line item on the menu. She made me feel as if I were brain dead or from outer space. That was extremely rude of her and made me lose face. It’s as if she were accusing me of wanting to run off with the milk tea without paying. It was an honest mistake as I just wanted a plain milk tea, not necessarily a fancy Macau Milk Tea. I’m not the only one who has experienced poor customer service at Victor’s Bakery. It is a pattern. On a separate occasion, my mother went there to purchase a Chinese newspaper and a cashier once again rudely pointed out the cost of the newspaper. Advice: Stay away unless you have a hankering to be treated like a petty thief!

I has been there few times, sometime the service is good but mostly is not, most of the time casher is stand there playing with her phone, I order few item BBQ bun, Chicken bun, cocktail bun and egg custard . The filling inside of the bun it was okay but not good. I had better in Chinatown with low price. The egg custard not even warm. Mostly this day all Chinese Bakery have a warmer keep all the bum and custard warm without dry.

Located directly across from Safeway and conveniently off of the L Muni line, sits Victor’s Bakery, in all it’s bao glory. Walk up to the counter and the ladies will greet you by mugging the crap out of you and then give you a head nod. If you’re lucky, they’ll actually ask you what you want. Don’t be offended. In Chinese, a mug and a «sup» nod is just like saying, «Hello. How are you? What may I get for you?» Except you will never get that, so don’t expect it. SCOWLFACE all day for you! Embrace it! This place is all bizness, git your bao and git out! Unless … you’re one of the same OL G’s, then you grab your baos, read your newspaper, chit and chat and just hang. I go for the baos and rarely for anything in the glass case. — BBQ Pork Bun: Classic! — Ham and Cheese Bun: Great snack. Don’t expect a lot of ham. or cheese though. — Curry Beef Bun: I know, it sounds a little questionable… curry? with beef? in a bao? .but it’s good! Trust! — And, you can never go wrong with a cocktail bun! Coconut paste mixed with butter/margarine/lard, it’s so bad, but so good for you! All else in the case gets covered with a red sheet at night, and in the morning, ABRACADABRA!!! Look at all dem goods! So, who knows how long these things have been in there for?! I tried the muffin and the walnut pound cake and they were just mealy and blahhh. PASS! Where else can you can breakfast/lunch/snack/dessert for around a buck and some change?! Only a Chinese bakery, that’s where!!! Eat your heart out! Maybe if I eat more buns, I’ll start looking like Nicki Minaj. Well, not all that, I just want a little bit of that. ;)

What’s not to love about Victor’s Bakery? Delicious Chinese pastries and cakes for a reasonable price. I love their pineapple buns, but all of their pastries are pretty good including BBQ pork buns, onion buns, egg tarts, and sponge cake. I also love their cakes because they are not too sweet and have fresh fruit in them .Your typical Chinese bakery cake has light cake that is not too sweet, fresh fruit, and that white whip cream filling and frosting… with a red color gel handwriting on top… in the pink to-go box. Victor’s Bakery has all of those checked! I also love that they are local and pretty quick to fill your order. *update* — Victor’s Bakery now sells customized cakes designed with fondant. Just bring in a picture of something you would like to make into a cake and place your order. I saw a gorgeous pink Chanel bag designed into a cake. It’s expensive though. The Chanel bag cake is $ 150! I doubt there was much cake in there, but it was too cute.

I’ve been going to victors bakery for years and the quality/prices can’t be beat. Hot dog buns, pineapple buns, BBQ buns and numerous sweet things such and chocolate cake slices and eclairs. Everything is in the $ 1 to no more than $ 3 range. I purchase a strawberry short cake here and the whip cream was great w just the perfect amount of sweetness. 8 inches for $ 21(plus $ 3 to add more strawberries) is a must. No dim sum here. Cash only also get their hot milk tea! Strong tea flavor and great for those cold mornings.

The buns and milk tea at Victor’s don’t top that at other bakeries, but they’re still good! Pineapple buns are $ 0.60 each. The sweet crust topping was a bit thin compared to that on other bakeries’ buns, but the overall bun was still tasty and warm. Egg tarts were $ 0.80 each. The crust was light and flaky, and the custard was lightly sweet with a good consistency. The Hong Kong milk tea here is fresh and smooth, though the use of both condensed and evaporated milk make it fall short in flavor compared to other Hong Kong milk teas. Don’t forget to bring cash! No credit cards here. If you’re craving Chinese buns or milk tea, Victory’s Bakery is a fine choice to satisfy your fix in the area.

This is it! After visiting several bakeries in SF during a BBQ Pork Bun Crawl, Victor’s Bakery emerged as the unanimous champion! This bun has the perfect amount of fluffy bread — just enough to give you that softness you love, yet has enough room to allow for a generous serving of delicious, chunky meat. The subtle sauce coating the meat made this bun a real winner. We also had Hong Kong Milk Tea, which is like traditional milk tea, but made much heavier with lots of condensed milk. Served hot, this tea can complement any of the baked goods you can get here. This bakery also has Portuguese Custard Cups! Unfortunately, they sell out rather quickly — the custard cups come out at 9:30AM and are sold out by noon — so come in early if you want to try them! This visit was part of a 6-person BBQ Pork Bun Crawl to a bunch of San Francisco’s most popular bakeries. To read up on other bakeries we visited, check out my Unilocal list: .
