Great south Indian thali meals, very flavorful and easy on the spices. The Ceylon Paratha was good too.

Just found two painted screws in my saag paneer 01÷29÷16. This was my favorite indian place in SF. I am moving on now… :)

Food okay. Go for dosas and other South Indian foods. Service is quick but they are constantly trying to rush your meal. Cash/checks only! I just saw the poor health rating here. Ugh…

Uttapam and Omlet were not cooked properly and looked like the people didn’t care much about it when suggested.

Cash/Checks only. No credit cards. 100% vegetarian! Go here for the food, not ambiance. Service is good. Dishes come quickly and tasty. Try different dosa. They are big! Also try different breads with many choices of dipping!

Great food, quick and good service, and pretty affordable considering the amount of food they give in one serving. I’d say if you want a slightly more authentic experience of Indian dosa compared to its more *fusion fancy* neighbor, this is the place to go. The place isn’t anything fancy and décor is negligible but you come here for the food. And that’s good enough for me. I can’t remember the kind of dosa I ordered but it was one with a lot of potatoes and it was delicious. I will definitely be returning here for my dosa cravings.

Best tasting Indian food. Don’t go on the ambiance… The food quality is amazing, the service is great, they bring the food out super fast. The best ever!

Be warned: unlike its brother in Downtown Berkeley, this location is cash only! Delicious dosa, and in my opinion better than the nearby Dosa on Valencia. Not only is Udupi Palace reasonably priced, but there are a lot more options for people that are trying dosa for the first time and don’t want to start off with something too fancy. Dosa on Valencia is good, don’t get me wrong, but maybe not the right place to introduce someone to the exquisite world of dosa. Udupi Palace is perfect for that. The descriptions of different dishes are clear, and the food comes quick. They give a good amount of food, and each dosa comes with three types of chutneys for you to try. I’m a big fan of the onion masala dosa, and the idli is also very good. It’s also worth mentioning that this place is 100% vegetarian! Good on you, Udupi.

Know before you go: Cash only! I’ve been going here for a couple years, all their food is delicious. I recently ordered one of their specials(on the tiny chalkboard as you head towards your seat), which was a saag paneer dosa, and it blew my mind with its deliciousness. I will be paying a lot more attention to that tiny chalkboard going forward. My friend is obsessed with their lemon rice. So that’s a thing. I’ve never had a bad dish here. Not even a mediocre one. Go and enjoy some delicious and inexpensive Indian food!

Unilocal warned me that this place has a low health rating, but it did not warn me that I will forget about the health rating as soon as I try their food. Between two of us we ordered 4 items and tried 4 different types of Indian bread with lots of sides and sauces. I enjoyed the paneer and green peas dish.

Dirt cheap, generous portions of pretty tasty(and at least seemingly) authentic vegetarian Indian food. I remember feeling really confused by the menu, but the servers are nice and will help you as you order. We ordered samosas, a paper dosa, and a mini thali to share. Each dish was very flavorful – though honestly not incredibly memorable, and the portions were huge. Our party of three left a lot of food on the table. A good alternative to Dosa if you want something a little more low-key!

I am a food lover of all kinds. I can honestly say, this is some of the best food I’ve eaten in my entire life. I eat out 3 times a day, so food really has to be amazing to catch my attention! The flavors of this food delicious! You could just point and choose anything on their menu and I’m sure it will be delicious! If you eat anywhere in San Francisco, make this one of those places. It doesn’t matter if you are m vegan, vegetation, or a meat eater. Good food is good food — no matter what name you call it. This is amazingly good food!

Udupi Palace is vegetarian Indian food, which is an interesting premise for a restaurant. No worries there — I don’t have to always chow down on steaks. Food is solid enough. They’ve got lots of dosas on the menu, as well as plenty of curry-based dishes. However, they don’t really give you a lot of food — the paper dosa was mostly carbs with a tiny bit of potatoes on a side plate. Paired with the expensive prices and this is one place that is just so-so.

Weekday, 7 pm — 2 people The setting — quiet when we came in, and remained that way for about 30 minutes, but became crowded and loud after 8 pm(not sure why that happened). I kept getting jostled by the party behind me, who were moving tables together to accommodate a party of 8 and generally being what you would expect from a loud group. Not a whole lot to say about the interior of the place — barebones, not many frills. Service was decent, nothing to complain about. For what we ordered and considering how many people were in the place when we ordered, I thought it took a little too much time. But then again, I have high expectations. Malabar Paratha — Multi-layered bread served with vegetable korma and channa masala. — the highlight for me here was the(mango?) chutney which I only discovered when I was almost finished with my paratha(my fault). The veg korma and channa masala were average, no standout flavors here. I thought the paratha was cooked well, not under or over-cooked, and had that right amount of pull-apart-ness that you need with this type of bread. For the price, I didn’t feel like I got enough, however. Masala Dosa — Crêpe stuffed with spiced potatoes — the dosa was expertly cooked, but there wasn’t as much stuffing inside as I would have liked. The sauces were nice and each one was distinct from the others. The value prop on this dish wasn’t really there either — it’s one big crêpe with some potatoes, no proteins. Overseas this would be less than half this price, and while SF restaurants are definitely more pricey on average, this was a bit much. Even in Singapore(most expensive city in the world), dosa plates like this are about $ 5. I’ve had this dish in India and around SE Asia, and this wasn’t in the top 5 — nothing stood out. All in all we were approaching full stomachs when we left, but were left wanting more. Maybe a taste of one of their curries would have given me a better impression of what they’re capable of making, because a dosa and a paratha are both pretty simple in terms of difficulty level. When I do eventually make it back, I’ll get something else and see if my opinion changes. 3.5 stars.

SIGH! our favorite Indian place for many reasons. Best service and most amazing, sweet, attentive people working here. Also, holy lord, that food… is real wholesome authentic food that doesnt masquerade behind a ton of fat/cream/salt/other junk that isnt good for ya. You KNOW quality good food when you eat it. It gets better with every bite rather than you getting sick of the overdone richness with every bite. This place is it. With that being said, I think every time I’ve been here, I end up ordering the veggie korma. I obviously love it. My mate got the special veggie curry, which was phenomenal as well. Even their(I feel reeeally terribly ignorant not knowing what it’s called) puffed up grainy bread is sooooo delicious. We love this place.

Mmm Mmm MMM! =P Was looking for a low key dinner one night and wanted something flavorful, minimum wait, and Well, we got all three! Started off with ghee sambar idly. Usually bf and I get our own because idly. I’m used to idly’s being a fourth of the size these were. These are MASSIVE. Halfway through the second one I was already full. So delicious. Next up was the special– curry dosa. Basically, if they have this you should order it. Chewy soft dosa drowned in spicy, flavorful curry with 5 different chutney’s. Not your typical dosa texture or size but it was a nice twist and totally devoured it. The onion & hot chili uthappam was oniony and spicy just as described. Nice texture, too. Service is great, very attentive, and my tummy was happy :) Just what I was looking for!

Pretty decent Indian place. Being Indian myself, my standards are pretty high though. I stopped by with a friend who had never had dosas before and she fell in love with them here. This is a no frills place for sure. Service was pretty quick and portions were nice and large like dosas should be! We got a Ravi masala dosa and a plate of idli Sambar. The dosa has good texture but the potato mixture tasted more North Indian than South Indian to me(warned you my standards were high). The chutneys were pretty good though. The idli was nice and soft but the Sambar was alright. I would have given this place 3 stars but they get an extra star for being so nice to me and my girlfriend! We got here pretty close to when they were closing but they let us put in orders anyway. They also didn’t rush us to close the place down. They also wanted us to wait inside while our über got there(it was probably past 11 pm at this point). Not the best South Indian food I’ve ever had, but I would definitely come back if I was in the area and was craving dosas.
