I am feeling very fortunate that Dr. Cynthia Chiu at UCSF is my ophthalmologist. In 2014 I saw Dr. Chiu for my regular eye exam. Since I have a fairly strong head tremor I had dreaded eye exams for a long time. Dr. Chiu was not only reassuring, but also helped me patiently to find a position that minimized the tremor during the examination. She quickly diagnosed cataracts in both eyes as the reason for the decline in my vision. After I had previously been told that cataract surgery is not advisable because of the tremor I was delighted that Dr. Chiu offered to perform the surgery under anesthesia. In preparation for the surgery she contacted my personal care physician and my cardiologist to get their clearance. The surgery was a full success and for the first time in 50 years my distance vision is great without glasses. In fall of 2015 I wrote Dr. Chiu an email about some sudden flashing and floaters in one of my eyes. She personally called me two hours later and made time to see me within hours. It turned out to be a benign condition. Dr. Chiu is not only highly competent and thorough; she also explains her findings in clear terms without any medical jargon. In addition she is a kind and emphatic person. This is why I feel very fortunate to be in her care.
