Upon finishing a tour of UCSF medical school, some classmates and I were eager for a hearty, warm lunch. Since we came by way of(16th and Mission) BART, we decided to eat around there. We saw this sandwich shop’s reviews and thought, «why not?» When we arrived at the quaint shop, Juan was sitting in front of this establishment. He immediately greeted us and said«you guys hungry? Come on in!» First impression of the inside was how small it was, BUT the selection of sandwiches on the BOARDS were GLORIOUS! Juan started to rattle off what kinds of sandwiches they offer from classics to vegetarian, hot to cold. We were so hungry everything sounded amazing. Then, he walked over to the meats and pulled a handful of steaming hot pastrami from its warm au jus! We were SOLD! He mentioned that he makes his own bread every day, fresh cut meats and friendly service. Above all else, he made us feel like we’ve known him for years(we were in the shop for no more than 10 minutes). He genuinely cared about the customers and their needs. He even brought us more chairs so everyone can sit and enjoy their food! Sandwich time: I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich with everything(mayo, pickles, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes, pepperoncini, American cheese) except mustard. Total was less than $ 10. I was very impressed when I took my first bite. Everything was warm, crunchy, melty, and DELICIOUS! Bite after bite, I was more and more impressed. I would definitely go back again for more sandwiches and Juan!

Juan is the best, and he makes great sandwiches too! Always friendly. He also has plenty of vegetarian options, and great homemade soups. Juan also cares a lot about the surrounding community. Oh, and did I mention that he makes great sandwiches? :)

As a Bay Area sandwich lover, I was in the area and wanted to try The Sandwich Place that I had heard about it. It lived up to its expectations. Great, juicy hot pastrami sandwich on a heated roll with everything and hot peppers(my only thing is I’d probably ask for a little less mayo). The giant size was maybe a tad too large for me so I may consider the regular size next time around. Service was quick and very friendly. Maybe I’d try some of their special combos next time, but MMM, that hot pastrami was so good!

Fresh, delicious sandwiches! Great prices too. The employees are very polite and friendly. One even gave soup to a homeless man outside. Perfect lunch!

Great sandwiches and even better customer service! Better than Ted’s Market & Delicatessen in my opinion.

It’s fine, the sandwiches are pretty tasty. But for the ‘deluxe’ to set you back almost $ 10 I’d want 2 – 3 times as much turkey and a bit more bacon. It seems like a place you have to frequent in order to really get amazing service, and from what everyone else is saying, that’s worth doing. But for a one off, it’s not a fantastic experience. Four stars for supporting a local family business.

This place is a great spot in the Mission, been here a few times for my lunch pick up. I must say, I’m blown away by the sandwiches. GREATPRICE& The flavor is ONPOINT. Everything tastes so FRESH! I absolutely LOVE their SAUCES too! THEYALSOUSEGLUTENFREEBREAD(Juan makes it himself) Juan is also a great plus about this place. His CUSTOMERSERVICE is OUTSTANDING! The ladies that work there are also very sweet hard working ladies too. I plan on coming back many times for lunch. I usually get papusas or a burrito, but those make me feel super lazy and guilty after i eat them. THISIS A PERFECTHEALTHYLUNCH THANKSFOREVERYTHINGGUYS –Viola

The Sandwich Place is as simple and solid as the name. You walk in, order your sandwich, receive it quickly, then proceed to enjoying it. The place may be a little small on the inside but honestly what more do you need from a sandwich shop. The selection is plentiful and well organized, very easy to find the right sandwich as soon as possible. The service is speedy and all the employees are very affable, they can help pass the short amount of time waiting with some light banter. Absolutely no time is wasted in this place, besides enjoying the sandwich. I had the honey chicken sandwich and it was truly a top tier bite. The honey added a delicate tang to the savory taste packing a punch to the sandwich as a whole. It was grilled to perfection as well, the bread had the slightest crisp on the exterior while still being soft and warm on the inside. But what really stood out to me was how well the sandwich held itself together. It was snugly packed and stayed together until the last bite. If it’s one thing I don’t like it’s a loose sandwich and this was the tightest sandwich I’ve ever sunk my teeth into. This makes the podium when it comes to sandwich shops.

I’ve been here 10+ times since I started working in SF this summer so it’s about time to leave a review. THESANDWICHESHEREAREAMAZING. I seriously don’t know where the reviews saying«oh the food here is average» are coming from – do you people not have tastebuds? Because allow me to iterate: this place is amazing. I’m a pescatarian so I usually get the Veggie Veggie or the Kauai. Both are equally delicious. The regular size is enough to make me feel pretty full, but I’ve come here with friends who get the large and it’s pretty gigantic. The owner is really funny and always great to talk to(though I occasionally catch him recycling his jokes, lol). Prices are super reasonable and while it’s always lively around lunchtime the wait time is never too long(I’m usually in and out around 5 minutes, unlike some places *coughcoughYama*). Basically this is the perfect spot to get a sandwich and I will miss it dearly when I go back to Philly. You should totally come here for lunch!

Good place to get a sandwich. Had the pastrami was good and not dry. I guess with all the Unilocal stars drove me to this place I was expecting more. The people were super friendly.

After 12 long years, I finally checked out the explicitly named Sandwich Place. It was worth the wait. I had the pastrami sandwich with all the trimmings(including jalapenos), and it was a generous and well-crafted sammy on a soft French roll. Will have this one again. The place is run by some sweet Latina ladies, very friendly and on top of everything. Pro Tip: this is a tiny place and it’s best to order your sandwich ahead and just pick it up, the place can hold maybe 3 people at a time max.

This was seriously the best sandwich I’ve ever had hands down. I got a Milanesa add hot pastrami, and I scarfed it down in about 20 seconds. Almost ordered another one. Wow.

Its a good value, lots for an economical price. I got a vegetarian like sandwich and I enjoyed it. They do soups too but it wasn’t as good as the sandwiches. I prefer their non meat sandwiches because like most places, the meat isn’t high quality. It will fill you up though.

I don’t get it. This must be one of those places that pays for a high Unilocal listing, because both the coffee and sandwich were sub par. The bread wasn’t even well toasted, and that pretty easy to get right. Three stars for the great service only, because the ladies who run it seem awesome, clearly have lots of regulars and were nothing but nice. But I just wanted some decent food to go. The avocado was perfect, so I ate that off the sandwich. The rest of it was not worth the wait.

My fiancée and I were greeted like family the moment we walked in. We were looking for some vegetarian options and we’re excited to see the many options. Lucky for us there special happened to be a delicious fish fillet sandwich. It’s the kind of place you look forward to visiting time and time again. We left and returned later that same day for a coffee. I was happy to see the care that went into preparing even just a regular coffee! The food and coffee are yummy, but the love and care put into it are what make this 35 year old, family-owned business a unique treasure.

Looked this place up with my fiancé in the mission district. We were looking for a place with a vegetarian or a seafood option and this place had plenty of that. Juan is one of the owners and he was very quick to recommend a sandwich option that had a mango sauce, grilled bell pepper and onion with filet of sole. The sandwich was called«The Kawai» The staff was amazing and delightful. The food was great and the service was complimentary! I wanna go back anytime I’m in the area and would recommend it to everyone.

The Sandwich Place should be a lunch staple for anyone in or near The Mission. Located on the seedy 2209 block of Mission across from the 16th Street BART, The Sandwich Place offers many selections for vegetarians and carnivores alike. From the over-the-top«Kitchen Sink» to the gluten-free, all veg«Tree Hugger,» everything is awesome. Juicy and huge, the Ruben($ 8.25), puts offerings from most Jewish delis to shame. While it is literally big enough for two people to share, it disappeared all too quickly in one sitting. The gooey Swiss cheese, nicely acidic sauerkraut, and creamy dressing meld with tender pastrami in the perfect combination. The owner, Juan, is friendly and entertaining. And all his bread, including the gluten free variety, is baked on site. An outlier among the myriad burrito joints, The Sandwich Place is heaven between two slices of bread.

Excellent sandwich place in the heart of the mission. The chicken parmesan sandwich is excellent! Very tiny place, no indoor seating, but there are a couple tables outside. Juan is very friendly and personable, and he clearly loves what he does. Highly recommended when you’re in the city and need a great sandwich for reasonable $$.

A few days after reading SFist’s «the 30 best sandwiches in San Francisco( ),» I found myself here. Let’s just say the stars aligned. This place looks very unassuming from the outside. Once you enter you are warmly greeted by the owner’s son Juan, and other members of the family. The sandwiches are large, made the way you want them and oh so good. I was here at 7a and another day at 2p and both times, the parade f customers never stopped. A definite add for your ‘to try” list.
