The best café you never knew was there! I know! I asked about 12 people who shop at Rainbow if they knew about it, and only 3 did. I didn’t know where it was until 3 months after it opened. Terrible signage, great café. That’s right, Rainbow Grocery co-op has a cute little patio café that serves up Stumptown coffee in whatever form you prefer(I’m drinking one of the creamiest, most perfect lattes I’ve ever had…). You betcha the organic milk & cream from Straus & Clover, respectively, are contributing to the delightful flavor. If you’d like a snack, there are delicious pastries & now, sandwiches. I haven’t tried them yet, but they look amazing and are $ 4.50, which sounds to me like a pretty great deal for a filling organic lunch option… The staff is extra sweet, and they really do know how to make a perfect espresso drink. No burnt tongue, no yucky low-fat, no weirdly sour milk from a poor, stressed-out cow. No feeling silly as you simultaneously buy a completely frivolous treat & wonder that a preciously-designed piece of real estate pays its rent in coffee. It’s still frivolous & the atmosphere’s very pleasant & nicely designed, but it’s worker owned. Mmm, tastes so ethical. They have a variety of non-dairy & non-caffeine options if you’re into that sort of needless austerity… Kidding! I’m cool with you, vegan homie! I swear this place exists. It’s parallel to/under the freeway on 13th or Division or whatever it is in that block. @Folsom. Behind the fence. Down a long passageway. Kidding again(sorry…the caffeine). It’s RIGHTTHERE to the right of the entrance where people turn into the parking lot.

Rainbow Grocery is one of my favorite grocery stores, and one that I shop at the most(despite my living in the East Bay). It helps that I work in San Francisco, just a few BART stops away, but even if I didn’t, I would make it a point to come here. Rainbow has their own little coffee shop next door. Wish they could come up with a better name, but I guess it gets right to the point. They brew Stumptown Coffee(a brand I am unfamiliar with) and have several milk options, including almond, soy, and coconut-hemp. The female barista working yesterday made me a really delicious almond milk latte. The milk had been steamed perfectly, so there was a rich microfoam on top and very little bitterness. Creamy and delish! I’m glad I ordered the larger size, because it was so lovely. I highly recommend it. I *almost* marked them down one star because my first visit was just so-so. The male barista who made me my drink didn’t heat the milk up enough, so it was lukewarm two blocks away. However, I appreciate the fact that they have three non-dairy milk choices, and all with no added surcharge(thank you! thank you! thank you!). It’s by no means my favorite coffee shop, but it’s a pretty convenient place to re-charge after a long day.

Excellent Americano. Don’t be confused by the address, it is adjacent to Rainbow Grocery.
