You slink into the unassuming entrance of the Hotel Rex, glancing at and then nodding to the front desk concierge silently. You hurry past the adorable-and-yet-functional tiny lobby into a cozy bar that definitely feels like the library in an old-school gentlemen’s club, with small tables, lots of wood trim, warm lighting, and an overall clean and intimate feeling. The menu on the table informs you to proceed to the bar to place any orders, but when your food arrives, it’s brought to your table by quick, friendly servers. The Charcuterie and Cheese Platter is of a good size, with a delicious assortment of meats and cheese along with thin french bread toasts upon which to pile your bounty. The Grilled Flatbread with bacon, arugula, and spring onion is tasty and filling, and you delude yourself that the arugula counts as your daily salad. But then you remember, they have Braised Pork Belly Rolled Tacos here, with jicama, a tomatillo salsa, and delicious cumin-lime crema… how could you be expected to resist??? Your cocktails are made expertly, the flavors perfectly balanced, your classic Lemon Drop fruity and smooth, your Aviation fragrant with the touches of maraschino and Lillet… A happy sigh slips out of your chest before you even have a second to consider how relaxed you feel, and then, just like that, your mysterious guest slides down into the seat next to you, fresh from powdering her nose in the WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE bathroom around the corner and down the hall… Tonight will be a good night!

Have you ever wanted to get wasted in a library? BEHOLD! O_o This IS such a place. You can order drinks from a bartender dressed in 1920’s attire(mustache included) and read from their library or BYOB(bring your own book). I mean come on… Read and drink coffee or read and booze it up? Duh… BOOZEWINSEVERYTIME. Décor: Honestly, it’s just an overdecorated hotel lobby area. But it’s consistent with the feel of a library. Dim lighting, so I don’t really know if you can read in there without a reading light. But the seating area to the left after you pass the front desk has the appropriate lighting for reading. Ambiance: Low key. It’s like staying in to have wine with your friends. But, not doing that and having stronger alcohol whilst pointing out all the books you should be reading but never will. Price: To be expected. Food: Don’t get the cheese plate. Not worth it. My friend and I did get served truffle fries on the house. Although I think it was just a mistake on their part. Oh well, HUZZAH for free food! It was her birthday so we had goals… drink… drink some more and wander the city. Mission accomplished. The drinks were well made and strong. Next time I stop by I’m just ordering drinks as the food just wasn’t worth the price. Wifi: NONEXISTENT. Major dead zone. You have been warned fellow Millennials! Overall: Great place to read a book, have a drink, and relax.

What a pretentious barkeep we had. Basically told us we needed to do our homework about cocktails when he tried to shake my Manhattan, made a dirty martini wrong, because a CLASSIC martini has bitters, but He put orange bitters in a dirty martini, saying«a classic martini has orange bitters in it». This is true, but we didn’t order a CLASSIC martini! We ordered a dirty martini which does not use bitters by any classic preparation! He made both cocktails incorrectly in many areas of the preparation! I usually don’t hold bartenders accountable to a perfect cocktails but if you are going to try to school a 14yr. Bartending veteran, who is also a bar manager. You’d better not pretend to know everything about cocktails. YOUNEVERKNOWWHOYOUWILLBEDEALINGWITH. And don’t tell us that we need to do our homework when obviously he hasn’t done his. Being a bar manager, I pride my bar on classic cocktail crafting, including the proper techniques and steps, many of Which he did not follow! My companion and myself like upscale bars as well as any dive, but won’t ever be returning here. besides the décor which was made to look like a library which was to be expected by name, and overall quiet and quaint. we had a terrible experience and I had to bite my tongue about his brash delivery about his extensive knowledge which he did not possess regarding cocktails… I hate being negative about places but hopefully the management knows about this bartenders know it all attitude and gives him some homework with a hospitality lesson as well.

Shitty service, don’t even think about sitting outside you’ll be constantly harassed by homeless, and you’ll get kicked out for interacting with them, it’s literally the worst place to go in the entire city. I highly recommend going elsewhere, the manager is a total dick as well. Plenty of other places, skip this one

Decided to stop in here because I love themed bars. The menu has some great classics on it. I got an Old Fashion, which was made perfectly. The bartender was really friendly and nice. He seemed knowledgeable. I also love any place that gives me that 1920’s — 1940’s vibe and this place is it. When we came on a Saturday night, it was pretty quiet inside and plenty of spots to sit, which was great. Plenty of couches and cute desks to relax at. The crowd, though not a lot of them, got super loud, only downfall and the bar can’t help that.

I decided to check off some bookmarks while I was in the area. On Friday, July 31st around 7pm, we stopped by for a round of drinks.(Or maybe two.) *Pistola($ 11): Evan Williams bourbon, kahlua, orange bitters *West side($ 13): hanger one buddha’s hand, lemon, mint, soda *Old-fashioned($ 11): James e pepper rye whiskey, bitters, soda *Glenlivet 18 yr($ 17) I started with the Old fashioned. It tasted really weak to me. Maybe too much soda? Since I wasn’t happy with the cocktail, I decided to follow up with a Glenlivet 18 neat. Decently priced for an 18 year. This is a cute hotel lobby bar, but I was expecting something that felt more like a bar inside a huge Library. I love libraries and books, so I was a little disappointed with the sole bookcase. The are globes everywhere which is library-esque. They had live music when we were there. Hawaiian music, so I felt like I should have been at the beach instead of inside a dark hotel bar. The singers were really cool though and funny. I guess I’m glad I checked this off my list, but I was expecting more library and less home office. A nice old school home office, but I don’t think it has that library feel.

This place is more like a hotel lobby area that is decorated like someone’s home library. Not a house but someone with an estate. It is welcoming and had mostly hotel guests and tourists the times I’ve stopped in. Drinks pricing are surprisingly reasonable for this area of the City(cocktails were $ 10s and $ 11s, with a couple of $ 13s, and hard liquor were less than a $ 20) but the cocktails were not what I’m used to(one ice cube and done). #alkiesnob Go past the check-in/lobby and you’re there. Also, live music on Fridays from 5 — 8pm(the night we went there was a two-man band). Good pre-game stop.

I would actually give them 3.5 stars. We went into the Library Bar after being in Bourbon & Branch. It wasn’t too busy, which was nice since I was chatting it up with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while. The bartender was personable and poured a decent kettle and tonic. The bar was a bit stuffy but not nearly as hot as Bourbon & Branch. I wouldn’t mind stopping in again in the future, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Library Bar is located inside Hotel Rex. I love the quaint quiet feel. The hubs and I met up a friend and it was a great place to catch up. Not too noisy, just chill! The drinks were strong and the people were pleasant. It wasn’t rowdy or anything.

Library Bar rocks! I had a Travel Zoo deal for dinner for two including 2 entrees and 2 drinks. I picked this deal because it’s right in my neighborhood, and… why not? We ordered a couple salads(flank steak and salmon), and we were pleasantly surprised as our meals were nicely seasoned, tasty and filling. Loved it! My bf got a beer and I got a margarita — it was nicely strong and left me feeling good! Take a look at the menu, order at the bar and then take a seat in the Library, a quaint area to have a meal and/or drink. They also have Monday movie night, live music Friday evenings and even cabaret(I need to check out the website for this). I love that this local hotel has events for both guests and locals to enjoy!

This was a cool place to go to get a drink and some food. I wasn’t overly wowed by the cocktail execution, but did enjoy my fish po’boy.

Joie de Vivre Hotels are known for their unique, boutique atmosphere. At the Hotel Rex on Sutter St. in San Francisco, their Library Bar is a great place for a quick, bite and beverage. Comfortable chairs surrounded by shelves of old and new books, guests are invited to read, relax, and enjoy. There is a full bar with specialty drinks for $ 11, a wine list, or house wine by the glass at $ 7. The food menu is small yet tasty. Order the parmesan truffle fries($ 7) with a seared ahi salad Nicoise-really fresh, crunchy and delicious, or try their salmon Caesar. You can walk to the theater district. Cheapest parking is Sutter Street garage 2 blocks away. Our parking angel found us a street spot right outside the door. Opens at 5pm. No reservations, first come, first served.

A great little bar. I was staying in the hotel and had a couple drinks here. The cocktail menu is super long, but the ones I had were great. Its a great quiet interior with a different feel to it. The Bartender was extremely nice and I had great conversation with the people there and he facilitated people chatting at the bar.

Library theme bar located in Hotel Rex. Kitchen closes at 9pm. Rex Burger with fries — cooked perfectly medium rare. The bun was the most interesting because it was a toasted English muffin. Very crispy on the inside. Overall solid burger. Fries were nothing special. Catfish po’boy — This was served in a sourdough baguette. I’m not a big fan of the bread because it can be hard but this one was pretty soft. The fish has good spices and overall it was ok. Drinks — The cocktails are pretty interesting here. Everything I got I enjoyed. I think I would only come here for drinks next time. Major dead zone in this place. Guess that’s a good thing. Communicate with your table and not be in your phone the whole time. The downside to this was I came here because I had a travelzoo deal and I had to run outside in order to load the codes.

Discrete bar place located in Hotel Rex! You can grab mini bar snacks and drinks while lounging here! You can’t quite tell that it is a bar from the exterior. That is what makes it quite nice to be just holding small conversations and catchups here!

Intimate little bar inside the The Rex hotel near Union Square. We had a long day of shopping and it was nice to just take a break with cocktails. Bookshelves and school desks all around and a variety of interesting books(I found a few gay romance novels that were quite interesting to say the least). Nice place to catch up with my bestie since its well lit, and there is a lot of seated area to just hang around in. We had fun perusing the books. My drink was a little strong so I had to slow it down. I had an amaretto something or other… it was sweet but so over syruped.

Pros: — bartender Tony Paloni was the best– knowledgable and friendly — cool, calm, and quiet library atmostphere — pretty good food, especially for a hotel bar — accommodating of large groups — also great for dining alone(I picture myself reading a book and enjoying a glass of wine here) — free birthday shots! Cons: — food didn’t come out quickly, but probably due to the fact that the bartender was responsible for serving both food AND drinks Bottom line: This is a great place for fireside chats, good drinks, and food. I have been dying to return and say hi to Tony, who was the cherry on top of an unforgettable experience.

«NERDSWELCOME» read the sign at the door. And yes, I did feel so welcomed by this bar in the lobby of Hotel Rex! My cohort and I went to Library Bar to reflect and plan during a conference. we wanted amplace where we could have a glass of wine andnamlight dinner. And we found that! Library Bar is a small space filled to the brim with dusty books, lit by small lamps and filled with soft strains of classical music. Even the menu is broken down into short stories, novellas, novels and epilogues. We were able to have conversations without shouting and enjoy a glass of wine for under $ 10 each. The specials were an amazing robust Malbec as well as a slightly sweet and fruiting Reisling. For food we partook in a salad with blue cheese and watercress as well as a cheese plate. Unfortunately the salad did have some bacon on it, which was not mentioned in the menu. For main course, I ordered that grill cheese and the butternut squash soup. I was actually pretty disappointed in the soup, it was very watery and not very rich at all. The grill cheese was awesome but I’m pretty capable of making grill cheese, I just wanted some comfort food while traveling! There was a book group there also at the time we were there and I have to say we were a little tempted to join… Overall, loved the atmosphere and the food was pretty good!
