Chic place, nicely laid out, cute and slightly clueless bartenders. Came here on a Monday and apparently they don’t serve dinner on Sunday and Monday’s. Not questioning San Francisco too much we decided to just have the drinks instead. I had the cucumber gimlet which was good and my friend had the Manhattan and we got the roasted almonds which come well presented on a little toasting pan. What was weird was that as soon as we were served, we got the check at the same time as service since we didn’t want another drink. It was like. Hey I’m done with you leave now. Anyhoo it’s worth the one drink wonder that it is. I would come here for a date or a girls night.

One of the sweetest spots of San Francisco, quite literally too! With such a beautiful ambiance and cute fireplace that you could sit next to while eating your dessert/drinking your cocktail! I had ordered a chocolate brownie with vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate sauce, and caramel! Oh MYGOODNESS, it was heaven on earth. I’ve been dying to come back here every since! This is a perfect spot to hang out with friends when you are trying to have a fancy night out! Their dessert presentations are oozing with perfection. Their lovely night vibe is just a cherry on top! I have only gone in the evening but I highly recommend this place! Maybe next time I’ll come try their brunch options! Only downside is its expense, but what in SF isn’t expensive?

Dropped by Sugar Café on Wednesday, April 22nd around 11:45pm. I can’t remember who’s idea it was to come by here, but it was pretty empty. We grabbed a table by the fireplace and just chilled while having one drink. It was nice as I like low key places. I’ve also come here several times in the past. When it’s got a more bustling lounge vibe. In my 20s, this was fun. You could grab a couple of drinks before going next door /downstairs to dance the night away. Now in my 30s, I’m drawn to the plush couches and comfy vibe. Especially when it isn’t too busy. I guess Sugar appeals to all ages of me!

Stopped in tonight after dinner hoping to enjoy some dessert and cocktails with colleagues. I guess that they were sold out of dessert and it wasn’t even 10 pm yet. Disappointed. The cocktails were nice– trendy– unique. Service was bizarre. It appeared that they had two people on shift, yet we had to go the bar to order drinks which kept interrupting our conversations. Nice atmosphere– clean. Not to loud.

First time I came here when it was in ‘bar’ mode instead of ‘café’ mode. Happened to come here on St Patrick’s Day so it was nice not being around a bunch of belligerent drunks that can barely stand up. They had some kind of special on all drinks because of St Paddys and the special ran til 9pm which was great! We got 5 high end cocktails for $ 35!!! We were like ‘load ‘em up!‘ But otherwise it has a great fireplace out front, high top tables and small tables in the back or the full bar. Would’ve been awesome if they had table service though as it was hard at times getting drinks but someone was constantly coming around picking up our empty glasses.

What an amazing place… it’s accommodating to everyone! Laptops and coffee in the day time, Happy Hour in the evening and Bar lounge in the night with good music too! And a really great food menu from breakfast to lunch to small plates apps and ofcourse the DESSERTS! Everything looked and sounded delish and the prices were all reasonable… What more can you ask for The atmosphere is very modern trendy and fun they have fireplaces nice big comfy couches where you can just chill and hangout, we sat by the fireplace enjoying our drinks and desserts(yes I said DESSERTS! Plural lols). We had their signature dessert«the deconstructed brownie sundae» and Apple crisp for drinks I had the red velvet something and a sangria and my friend had the Coughlin s law which was sweet but really good. To all my sweet tooth cravers SUGARCAFE is deff the place to be at right about now ;)

Service rating! Was prepared to give this place a good rating… But I felt the service was not ideal. In a first-come-first-serve food service establishment, I don’t think it’s fair that I was asked to move to another table in order to accommodate a group of businessmen. It may have appeared I was alone but in fact, I was meeting a group, and I had already waited 30 minutes to find a table to accommodate my group. Feel pretty certain if I had been a man in a suit I would not have been asked to move(seeing as no one else sitting solo at a larger table was asked to move). I had always been curious about the place — and now my curiosity is satisfied. Likely won’t be returning. Food was decent. A solid 3.5 stars. Had a grilled cheese, some soup, and salad. Wasn’t bad. Also had an iced mocha which was tasty(super sweet though).

Such a cute café spot. Came in today to have a mimosa while I waited for a show to start at the Marine’s Memorial theatre. As soon as I walked in the café felt so warm and cozy. Beautiful fireplace with several couches that were unfortunately taken but that was okay because there were plenty other tables available. We were a party of 5 and it wasn’t hard to find a table to accommodate. We ordered Sangrias both white and red, a few pastries, and a cup of fruit. Sangrias: tasted like juice but got the job done. Felt nice and warm just after one drink. Pastries: tasted nice and fresh Fruit cup: I usually hate prepackaged fruit but it was actually nice, fresh, sweet, and delicious. All around awesome experience! Highly recommend.

The ambiance here is really chill. The play awesome music to just sit back and enjoy a nice convo with friends or a date. I wish I wasn’t full when I came here(only ordered desserts) because their menu selection looks really good!(I wanted to try the Cage Free Burrito) I got their apple crisp a la mode!(SUPERBOMBBYTHEWAY) if you are a fan of apple pie(or even if you are not) you gotta try this!

I’ve been meaning to 5 Star Sugars for quite a while. I’ve enjoyed this unique bar/café/espresso restaurant for a few years. I discovered Sugars during my first stay at the Marine Memorial Hotel down the street. I was in the hunt for a macchiato and pastries. I was not disappointed. What initially drew me in is the glass enclosed fireplace. It defined Sugar’s vibe and ambience. They have an eclectic selection of morning food and beverage options including their Croque Monsieur and their Croque Madame. Both can be «had» to go for under $ 10.00. I’ve also enjoyed their bacon and eggs much to the chagrin of my dietician. I intend to try their French Toast next. They two varieties — one sugar FT is more like a dessert and their regular Fat is served with berries. Try any of their salads or sandwiches for lunch. For post dinner, theater or club cocktails, try their cheese«cure». It’s an array of several delectable choices. Or if you need a meat dish for your evening protein, the pork sliders is my suggestion. They have a decent espresso machine and all their staff is well trained at pouring shots. The staff is always on their game and very pleasant. This is one of my standards haunts when I’m in The City.

This place has really really great ambiance and great food. There’s a fireplace, lots of really cool artwork, projectors and surround sound. There’s also some seating upstairs which looks pretty nice too. I ordered two eggs your way, scrambled with duck bacon. It was really tasty! My boyfriend ordered the grilled chicken pesto which he described as «next level.» We came back another time and ordered the Sugar French Toast which was amazing! It comes with tasty banana pudding and is really thick! I kind of wish the menu was longer, we came in around 10am and there were about 5 breakfast options, but way more for lunch. We can’t wait to come back for cocktails at night!

Where else can you bring your laptop around 3pm and write a character you have been working on into an impossible corner that you can’t get out of, order a few drinks to try to get that writers block over the edge of the cliff, then say fuck it and slam that laptop down and order more drinks and stay until its time to go dancing next door? Not many and that’s the appeal and charm of Sugar Café. Its someones favorite something at some point during the day and they do it all really well. It helps that this place is literally right outside my door but locale aside the place just gets it right. In the morning its relatively uncrowded and offers a great alternative to starbucks or peets for coffee or breakfast pastries. The modern and sleek setup of the place can turn some people off I understand. Everything about this place is hip and cutting edge and it seems at times you can only enter with the latest heels, scarf accessory or ipad in your hand but its not as pretentious as it may seem. You can come in and sit for hours and no one is going to bother you or harass you as many of your precious mom and pop cafes will and sometimes its nice to feel like you walked into the set of a Calvin Klien commercial shoot to get your coffee in the morning. During the day its really laid back with sports on when there is a big game or just background music to get work done. There is a large fire place at the entrance and public computers. What? I know awesome. The fireplace is cozy and the couches are super comfortable if you can grab one. They are also closed a bit for private parties at times but I am okay with that if that’s how they make their money and keep it cool for the rest of us. Watches the world cup all day here once, write a short story for 3 hours, had an amazing date by candlelight at one point. I have lived lives here and plan on living a few more before I am done. The bartenders and waitresses are all gorgeous people and split time with the Cellar as well so its to be expected that you won’t feel too great about yourself after watching them for a while but maybe that is a personal beef. Stupid attractive people. Being all attractive. The drinks in the evening are delicious and reasonably priced especially during happy hour and don’t forget about bottomless mimosas on Sundays. What doesn’t this place have and what can’t it do? Grab your designer jeans and your skinny tie and grab a seat next to a model for a night or put on your RayBan hipster glasses and write until your hearts content during the day. Its like doing your errands but doing them in a Ferrari. Everything feels a little better in a Ferrari. See you at Sugar.

After a brief hiatus from Unilocal,I am back… And back with a vengance. . What better place to review than that of my second home, sugar café. Sugar wears many hats; it is a café, it is a restaurant, it is a bar, it is the #1 importer of model bartenders this side of the Mississippi… but most importantly, it is an unpretentious wallet friendly lounge in the nob hill neighborhood. Swing open those monstrous glass doors and you’ll find yourself in a beautiful, well-lit venue playing some great(soft) music just begging for your hard earned money. To your left, a wall of windows looking out to sutter street; great for people watching the not-so-artsy art students and methed out bums screaming our favorite obscenities. A fireplace, multiple couches and a long bar lines the main room; there is also a back room(should they need it) housing local work from local artists. sugar has the most outlets per sq-ft in SF to house your laptop, cell phone or tamagacchi… whatever the need may be. This isn’t your standard downtown dig: sugar has an extensive food menu and drink menu without the sass(okay, maybe a little sass). Want a beer? There’s a diverse selection from local brews to bud light(i’m in the corner judging your bud light). In the mood for a cocktail? They have unique mixologist contraptions to minimalist favorites(such as my vodka/soda/lime). If you’re around on the weekends(why wouldn’t you be?!), take advantage of the new bottomless build your own bloody mary bar or the bottomless mimosa brunch. Or lets say you’re DD, great coffees and lattes are on the menu as well. Food menu is ever changing from small plates, apps, pizza, sandwiches and even develed eggs(me now: ) Fun fact: social hour. Social hour lays your happy hour down and then proceeds to shat on its chest. 4 dollar wells and 4 dollar beers until 9pm every night. If this doesn’t make you social, you need therapy, not a beer. In theory, you could come here for breakfast/coffee… have lunch… dinner/cocktails… and then find yourself dancing on a table at night and you NEVERHAVETOLEAVE(speaking from experience… maybe?). The staff will pour you a drink with a smile you’d usually have to pay for, engage in conversation on diverse topics from nascar to pug breeding habits and keep your drink filled; what more can you ask for? Want a bearded guy name Earl to crack open your PBR and then attempt to punch your lover? Go to the mission. Sugar keeps it classy. Shout out to Jamie for keeping the scarf game strong and giving out the best hugs in union square, Tiffany for always putting up with me and Fabian for making sure I stay for«just one more drink» only to end up missing out on my nightly plans. I love you all. Sugar, you’re too sweet to me. Xo.

Interesting concept with a lot of potential but did not quite do it for me. Sugar café based on what the pretty bartender told me is a café during the day and a lounge at night. I was there late in the evening for a snack and a drink. Pretty decent collection of cocktails, drinks and small plates. Interesting décor with high ceilings, tall mirrors behind the bar and a mixture of couches and tables. I had the deviled eggs which were pretty good, nice presentation. The salted carmel sundae was just average. Whole lot of ice cream but not a lot of toppings. Service was just OK, the bar tender was friendly but the guy who served the food was surly.

Skip the food… the cooked food, at least. Based on today’s Two Eggs Your Way dish, I would have given them a 2 star rating. Two Eggs Your Way: Choice of two eggs, ham/duck bacon/chicken sausage, white/wheat toast, house potatoes, and salad. Over easy eggs: One of my egg yolks was already leaking into my salad when my plate arrived. Ok, yolks pop… but what was up with the pool of GREASE surrounding my eggs? I couldn’t tell whether the oil was from the fried eggs or the greasy salad dressing(maybe both). It was so greasy that the salad touching the eggs were soggy and soaked. Every time I tried to carefully place my knife down on the clean edge of the plate I’d somehow manage with greasy fingers. Duck bacon: Not really sure what it was. It was ok, but nothing memorable. Tastes like ham??? House potatoes: A little overcooked. Kinda mushy. Salad: Again, I couldn’t tell if it was greasy from sitting on a plate of greasy eggs or if the salad dressing was creasy as well. Salad alone, seemed fresh(except for the soggy portion). Toast: Can’t really mess up toast, can you? Buttered well and not burnt. Coffee: Served in a big cup. Hot and tasty. Reason for the 3 star review is because I love the space(I can stay there for hours at a time) and there are a good number of outlets everywhere. Employees are friendly and serve fairly quickly. Their coffee has yet to fail me and I just may stick to eating their pastries next time.

Loving the concept — coffee bar at day, lounge at night. Sugar Café was one of my first places in SF to come to and I still like going there! My first visit was confusing — I wanted to grab a coffee at 5.30pm but ended up with a beer. As I learned from the helpful and friendly staff, coffee machines close at 5 and the bar opens right after. I wasn’t too bummed about it! From then on, I switched my after-work coffee for a beer(okay I don’t know if that’s too good of a tradition). The interior is best described as modern/loungy with a fireplace, sofas, tables, and bar stools. Super high ceilings and there’s an upstairs area as well. Did I mention the staff? Super friendly and always up for a chat. Bring it on, sugar!

Quick update because of a new brunch item: asian pork belly sliders. They are really yummy however on their own, not too filling. I would order it as something to share versus a brunch entrée. The braised pork belly is wonderfully tender and flavorful especially when dipped into the sweet soy dipping sauce. Nice alternative to usual brunch fare. Bottomless mimosa is still on for brunch but now with a set time limit. Weird that our first carafe of mimosas came with ice in it but all was good after when we told them not to. Staff are nice and accommodating as usual. For a low key boozy brunch around union square, Sugar Café is still one of your few options but a decent one at that.

This place is like the bar equivalent of the Van Halen video for«Hot for Teacher». At first, the schoolteacher is prim and proper, but then she rips her clothes off to become a former Playboy Playmate in a bikini bottom, a ripped top and a sash that says«Phys Ed». Yeah, that’s what Sugar Café is about — a quiet coffee bar by day and then a trendy, thumping house music lounge by night with a Euro-hip décor and back lighting in blue and purple(photo: ). I was first here years ago with my friend Carlos when we met for coffee, and I finally returned with Jamie W. just the other evening when we were feeling a tad peckish for dessert after a burrito bowl at Chipotle and a free concert at Union Square. This time, we were there as its identity was going through its day-to-night transformation. You could tell because a middle-aged man came in and immediately hit on the striking-looking waitress setting up the bar. The area around the faux-fireplace was taken(photo: ), so we took a tall table across from the bar and immediately zeroed in on the Sugar Sweet section of the menu where all the desserts were $ 7.99(photo: ). The flashiest of the decadent selections looked to be the Signature Deconstructed Brownie Sundae, and indeed it was with a wedge of chocolate brownie and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, all of it drizzled with chocolate sauce and house caramel crème Chantilly(photo: ). Yep, my sash says«Phat Ass». DESSERT&COFFEE — 3 stars… intensely sweet dessert was probably what we didn’t deserve… oh well… but the Americano was rich & piping hot(photo: ) AMBIANCE — 3 stars… Euro-clubby with a high Asian youth quotient SERVICE — 3.5 stars… I thought the striking waitress was quite serviceable TOTAL — 3 stars… schoolteacher or stripper, it’s what you want it to be…’cause I’ve got her bad, got her bad, got her bad… I’m hot for teacher!

Sugar, Oh Honey Honey… This place is a pretty sweet and chill café. During the morning it is a coffee café and they have brunch! Bottomless Mimosas! Sweet! The café is pretty small, clean and has a modern feel. At night, I heard this place becomes a bar. I have yet to experience the night life of this place, but I hear it is pretty good and fun! I met a few of my old coworkers here for breakfast. We didn’t get brunch, just a few pastries and coffee! Let me just say that the coffee they serve is very good. I am in love with Bicycle Coffee Co. Yummy! The staff is friendly and give great recommendations. Don’t come too early(like when they open!) though, they seem a bit unprepared.
