Warning: NEWOWNERSHIP I used to frequently patronize K & S, since they had reliably cheap and decent produce. Their avocados were always excellent and, being an avocado fiend, this was important to me. The Korean family who owned it took pride in keeping the tiny space well-stocked and clean, but late in 2012 they sold it to a couple of fellows… UPDATE: …who greatly improved things! I was dubious when the market was first sold, and it was a bit shabbier for the first few weeks, but then they closed the market for about a month for a complete remodel. When they reopened, it was far nicer than it was when the Korean family owned it! Clean, brightly lit, easier to get around in, and the produce is, once again, reliably good and cheap. And the guys who run the place have been very nice and helpful the three times(so far) that I’ve been in. If you live within a few blocks of the corner of Geary and Larkin, and you need fresh produce in a hurry, there’s no better place to get it. Give ‘em a try!

This place is inexpensive and they have great produce. They don’t have everything, but their produce is fresh and reasonably priced. I usually sway away from their clearance produce in front though. One thing that’s weird though; they claim to have Mexican Products. If i was to rate them on that, they would be three stars, but overall… Solid 4

This place is really close to a friend’s apartment. He buys cheap lettuce for his guinea pigs here. It’s convenient and the people who work there are nice. Favorite thing: they have TUNAS! No silly, not the fish. Prickly pears. Don’t worry, they’ve been de-spined, but you’ll occasionally get a little one stuck in your hand. To eat: cut a line into the thick skin and just peel the skin off the meloney(similar to honeydew) fruit within. There’s a lot of seeds(a LOT) and you can just eat them it doesn’t hurt you, or you can spit them out if you’re picky. Nom! Remember, cash only!(there’s an ATM as well)

This place makes me wish I worked during the day so I could go here after work. It’s just a block from my apartment so I often go on my days off, especially when the civic center farmers market isn’t happening. For a tiny little store they have a surprisingly large selection. Prices are fair, and the people there are nice. One time I was 80 cents short(and I was only buying about 5 dollars worth of stuff) and the woman said to just pay the rest next time. I always want to buy way more than I know I’ll eat before it goes bad; I have to make the hard decision whether to buy the pineapple or the container of strawberries. If only they were open more often when I am able to go.

At various times I have tried to forestall the trainwreck that is my life by shopping at produce marts. The first one, some eight years ago when I first moved to san francisco, was the incredible 22nd& Irving. But I moved from there(who the hell, in their right mind wants to hang around the sunset?), and so lost that joy. In walks K&S, and, while a bit small, it’s pretty much tops in the neighborhood for cheap, quality produce. Minus one star for not having blood oranges yet.

Well, I’ve got to add my kudos to all the others: this place gets me my dinner nearly every night. It’s cheap, fresh, the people are friendly, and they have a good selection(they have miso! and kipper snacks!). As with all produce markets, the selection and prices vary some with the season, but this is a place where you can reliably do a good chunk of your grocery shopping for a fraction of supermarket prices.

I’ve been putting off writing a review for fear that a bunch of annoying people start swarming the place, but this grocery garage deserves its props. A large variety of seasonal produce at crazy good prices, plus other stuff like mexican products, some meats and dairy case stuff, and nuts and granola. It’s awesome to stop off here on your way home from work, if this is on your way, so you can pick up some healthy fresh stuff for dinner to make that night, and so all your stupid friends who moved to Europe can shut their stupid«I moved to Europe» faces about how much America sucks in the way we shop instead of shopping daily for dinner like the Europeans.

Next time you go to Safeway, check out the produce prices. A good example is apples. Most varieties of apples at Safeway will be $ 1.99 — $ 2.99/lb(unless they’re on sale). Now come to a produce store like K&S and all apples are $.99/lb. Safeway knows that consumers are great at comparing prices of branded dry goods(cheetos, life cereal, chef boyardee, etc). But they’re not so good at pricing fresh produce or meat by the pound. Therefore if you’re lucky enough to have a place like K&S around, shop there first for your fruits and veggies! Great place, but knock off 1 star, since sometimes you really have to search for that perfect pepper, slightly more so than at the grocery store.
