i think its different but it feels so lonely… there was stores and all but there was nobody there… i hate to be so negative but i think there should be more than this… maybe if there was more then there would be more people…

The new Japantown History Walk is a great addition to Japantown. I’m so happy that the community has finally decided to embrace and educate the community and visitors of Japantown and of the long history of Japanese Americans here in San Francisco. I had almost forgotten the history of Japantown, given the mall like atmosphere that it has become today. There are beautifully designed poster boards filled with descriptions of former businesses, and events that have taken place throughout the years. The walk starts at the Pagoda at the Peace Plaza at the Kintetsu Mall entrance. And from here you follow the numberd plackards that depicting the events. Everything is so clearly labeled and easy to understand. The Uoki Saki Market, which is the 3rd stop of the tour describes one of the first family owned fish shops near Post and Laguna Streets. Another great local family business, that I believe is still existent today is the Benkyodo Candy Store. It was especially great to read about the Injustice and Honor of the Japanese Americans during WWII on the 2nd, 10th and 13th stop which explains the impact of the war and Internment camps on the community. This is a history that can never be forgotten. After the 16 stops, I recommend stopping at the Japanese Sensu(Fan) on Webster Street between Post and Geary. It’s a beautiful multi-colored fan displaying the pagoda and other pretty designs. Overall, this is definitely a must! Great free walk for locals of San Francisco and visitors. It was very heart-warming and educational. Definitely visit the Japantown History Walk for a little history and to honor those who settled here years ago!
