Event: Buying Oranges Price: $ 1.80 The cashier refused to sell me oranges because my dollar was slightly torn. She explained that she can’t reuse my dollar because other customers won’t take my torn dollar. I told her I don’t have any other bills with me. I asked her if she can take the bill and turn it in at the bank. She retorted saying, «Why can’t you take the bill to bank for a newer one [then come back and buy it]?» At the end, she took away the oranges and proclaimed to the whole store that I was being a trouble maker. Never in my life has anybody ever refused my money. I’m so shocked at this produce store’s business ethics.

The produce here is not bad … at least it’s better than the produce at San Bruno Supermarket — that’s for sure. The veggies are not bad. You can find some exotic Asian fruits here which are pretty fresh.

This market is OK, but nothing exceptional. It’s not hard to beat the produce at the San Bruno Supermarket, and for Asian vegetables, this is a good choice. For a wider selection of quality fruits and vegetables of all kinds, I prefer La Loma across the street(at Bacon). I’ve found prices vary across items and weeks, but generally they are competitive. Customer service for non-Latinos is friendlier at La Loma than for non-Asians at J & S.

This neighborhood produce market just opened its doors this week. I’m hopeful that their competitive prices aren’t just for the grand opening phase because the neighborhood really needs some stiff competition for the middle-priced produce sold at the San Bruno Supermarket. The fresh quality of the produce is already better than the refrigerated greens sold at San Bruno Supermarket. On my initial visit I found medium-sized broccoli crowns at 0.59 a pound, medium oranges at 0.39 a pound, bitter melon at 0.59 a pound and watermelon at 4 lbs. for 1.10. Super sweet donut peaches were only 0.99 a pound! At prices like that I might be able to reduce my visits to the Richmond and the Sunset districts for my Asian vegetable needs. They carry a small variety of Asian cooking sauces in addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables. Welcome to the neighborhood, J & S!
