If you’re not a «long time customer» he doesn’t give half a crap about your hair, and just speeds through it… barely cutting it… leaving it uneven… it’s as if you never even got a cut when you walk out.

I want to echo Jeremy G’s comments in his two-star review on 1÷18÷2012. After going to HH since November last year, I have finally found another hairdresser for only $ 8 and with a much better technique than HH’s. I’ve always thought his technique was crude, even for $ 12, and just like Jeremy G, found my hair growing back in an uneven fashion. He’s very friendly and chatty, but I did think he got too personal at times. You get what you pay for, but sometimes, you get more for paying less too, as evidenced by the new place that I’ve found!

I’ve been going here as long as he’s been open… maybe twenty years? Every once in a while I may go to a different place and pay three times the money only to I find that Ben does just as good a job on my hair as anyone else, and I come right back. The place is nothing fancy and not for the maintenance-heavy or special needs; it’s just regular haircuts for men, women and children at a decent price.

I work nearby and wanted a new barber. After browsing Unilocal for awhile, I found this place. At first, I didn’t know if i was at the right place because it is shared with some dry cleaner place. I was greeted by the owner and proceeded inside. It is rather small and only has one barber. I told him the hair style I wanted and he started. Had decent small talk with him and as others said, he doesn’t force a conversation if it is unwanted. Not the best haircut I’ve ever gotten but for $ 12, it was pretty solid. I will definitely come back when I need another haircut.

If you have trouble finding time to get a haircut, you don’t want to pay a ton, and you work in the financial district, then this place is for you! I hiked a couple blocks up the hill at 12:30 on a Tuesday and found absolutely no line, just a friendly barber welcoming me to the chair. He asked a couple quick questions about what I wanted, even offered to trim my beard(I declined), then got straight to work. No nonsense. He worked primarily with scissors to trim three months of growth, then cleaned up the edges with a trimmer. I don’t like a ton of conversation, but he made just enough light chat to pass the time. He wrapped it up, did some light styling with a blow dryer, and charged me less than your average FiDi lunch — just $ 12! I tipped generously and was back in my office by 1:10. It’s not the fanciest cut I’ve ever had — that’s the missing star — but it’s even and just the right length. If you’re looking for a quick, cheap haircut in the FiDi — Happy Hair is a winner. I’ll be back.

Needed a haircut and this place happened to be next to my hotel. One of the best cuts I’ve had in ages and can’t beat the price and friendly service. No pretensions here. Really happy I stumbled into it.

Very convenient for an afterwork haircut and reasonably priced at $ 12. Benley is a really nice guy, who engages in good conversation and makes the time fly by.

Awesome place to get a haircut! Benley takes his time with your hair and does a flawless job on it. He also tries to engage in conversation to get to know you a bit more, and from there he develops loyal customers that would climb the hills of Pine Street just for a haircut from Benley. Come check it out for yourself!

I really don’t like doing this, but after two trips to HH, I can say that I did not get a good haircut either time. A haircut should not fall apart after two weeks, but that’s exactly what happened to me. Not only are the sides of my hair growing back unevenly, but there is a general lack of consistency throughout my head. And while my hair grows fast, it doesn’t grow in patches. This cut is cheap, but really not worth it. Perhaps if the proprietor spent more time focused on the hair and less time talking to his wife or other friends/guests, then my hair might be in better shape.

I went over there today for the first time. He did a perfect job, and it was only 9 bucks. Five stars for me !

Best haircut value in downtown SF. I’ve been going to Benley for 3 years. Quality for a low price, with friendly service. You can’t beat it.

I have been coming to Benly for almost 4 years. He gives a great cut at a great price, plus is always happy and upbeat. You can’t beat the $ 9 haircut anywhere, trust me I’ve tried the $ 8 specials in Chinatown. Great location downtown and I am usually in and out in 15 minutes. Try it and you won’t regret it.

I am hair challenged and go to Benlee for a #2 hair cut every 2 weeks. He is pleasant and always has a story about his vacation. He will wash my hair after the cut for an additional $ 2. Well worth it, even though he raised his rate to $ 9!

I’ve been going to the Happy Hair Studio since the early 90’s and this place is by far the best haircutting value in all of SF. Benly charges only $ 8(I challenge you to find anyplace in the Bay Area cheaper than that) and is always very efficient. Benly is also very friendly but doesn’t talk your ear off/is happy to let you sit quietly if you prefer not to make small talk. He’s also very convenient to downtown, which makes it very easy to cut out of the office to get a quick cut(I work in the financial district). Benly has many loyal customers who have been going to him for years(like me) but never seems to have a problem taking walk-ins. I’m only writing this review now because Benly has been losing a lot of customers due to layoffs downtown and I don’t want him to go out of business(because then I’ll have to go to the $ 12 guy!!!)
