Every Monday night, I love going to Jazz at Pearl’s to see the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. The band kicks ass, playing some great bop and post-bop jazz with big band instrumentation. You’ll recognize many of your favorite local jazz musicians among the CJO, including soloists from the trumpet, trombone, and saxophone sections. They play a lot of Thad Jones charts, as well as a mix of hip songs from original compositions, original arrangements, and my favorite Mingus tune, «Haitian Fight Song». I bought their CD, «Monday in the City» a while back and fell in love with CJO’s versions of Passion Dance and Minor’s Holiday. The CJO does a great arrangement of Sonny Rollins’ «Oleo» as well as the familiar«When I Fall in Love». Check them out on Monday nights. They have an earlier show at 8:00PM and a late show at 10:00PM. Shows are about 90 minutes each.
