Went for dinner and the business was brisk The service was excellent and very friendly We ate indoors and we enjoyed looking out the window at the activity on the street I got the pizza and my hubby got the Italian calzone Both were excellent and the portion size was large More than we could eat We would recommend

The BEST lasagna we’ve ever had. Filet was delicious, as well as the creamed spinach. Outdoor seating with heaters was nice. Enjoyed the full bar as well. Did not like the bread-it was a little stale and tasted like grocery store French baguette. We did not like the oil and vinegar either.

Terrible service Asked for a heirloom salad with avocado on the side. They made it with avocado, I informed them it was with avocado. They bought back the salad 5 mins later with avocado on the side. However instead of making a new salad, they removed the avocado that was mixed in and put it in a small container. Thanks for not caring about people with allergies!

Absolutely fantastic meal. In the heart of NB, we’ve passed this place hundreds of times, its neon sign is eye catching. We decided to need some visiting friends there to give it a try. Maybe our expectations were low because we thought it would be touristy, but it was fantastic. Crab fettucine with scallop sauce was terrific, perfectly cooked fettucine noodles and plentiful crab. My wife and I shared that and the crab & spinach toast. This was also delicious but very rich. It’s a good appetizer if cut and shared between several people. I wanted to try a meatball, which is my gauge of an Italian restaurant. The waiter said they didn’t offer a side. So we pulled a Five Easy Pieces move a la Jack Nicholson and ordered a meatball sandwich, hold the bread and hold the potatoes. We received an entrée sized order of smallish meatballs. They were quite good, not mama’s but very good nonetheless. The décor is charming, the walls are lined with packages that I recognized from my nonna’s pantry. Another friend had the mussels and judging by her eyes rolling back in her head, I venture to guess they were very good. The service was outstanding as well. Our server Rigo was terrific. We’ll be back and bring friends for sure.

Loved loved loved the gnocchietti with the meat sauce. It was delicious. The margarita pizza was light and crispy, it was good as well. The chicken calzone lacked some flavor. Over all I would come back for the pasta. I do not recommend the mixed drinks. The cucumber cooler was not tolerable it had a strange taste to it, as did the sangria had a perfume type flavor. Next time I will just stick with the water. The ambiance is so cute definitely sit out on the patio, cute tables and you enjoy your food and people watch. Overall I would return to this restaurant.

While the pasta here is al dente… I was expecting a more worthy pasta sauce for my crab pasta. Crab tasted frozen or not fresh. Not worth the amount I paid for pasta. Bread rock tho

Tonight I got to split two meals. The calzones were really good. I’ve had many calzones, ranging from papa johns, to some Italian guy in New York. There were definitely on the loose half. It’s also the best deal. I also got the prawn Alfredo. It being 6 months since I had Alfredo, it was amazing. It was actually really damn good. I also recommend. Atmosphere and all, I’ve had better, but Check it out!

I went to this restaurant last weekend because I’ve been craving a good calzone ever since I moved to the Bay Area from New Jersey. Obviously, a place named after the very thing I craved must be good, right? Wrong. Not only did I spent almost $ 70 for a calzone, two salads, and two beers(plus extra charge for marinara… Which is absurd at an «Italian restaurant»). But, I also got to spend a good amount of time that night in the bathroom. Listen, I’m not some kind of Italian food elitist. All I was looking for was fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, and a drink. This place is a tourist trap(it MUST be), unless $ 18 calzones that give you diarrhea is what you’re into. And what’s with the bread with no butter or fresh olive oil/seasoning? This is some basic stuff here… Very disappointed.

The crab dungeness fettuccine was delicious. The presentation made it look like the portion size was small, but it’s actually really filling(and decently flavorful, although it needed the grated Parmesan on top). The service could’ve been better. You have to flag them down if you need something. However, the food was hearty and the ambiance was charming. The wall displays made you feel like you were in an Italian grandma’s pantry, in a good way.

I love this place. I’ve been stopping by for nearly ten years. The cute little bistro tables outside are great when I’m with a girlfriend but I actually wouldn’t recommend for a romantic date as you are sitting side by side. The colorful people who walk by trying to sell you stuff can be interesting too. Any how, they make great mojitos, get with whatever you want rum, tequila, vodka. The pizzas are delicious, light and airy. The pasta is rich and filling but you just go with the chocolate mouse and the mint whip cream with a cappuccino to end your night!

The lights. The eclectic décor. The picture windows. The outside tables. These are the pluses. What are the minuses? The tourist overload. It’s a common pitfall in this neighborhood. And it’s on fire at this establishment. Then, there’s the food. Food wise, Calzone’s lives up to the tourist restaurant image perfectly. The food is mediocre at best. Stick w fried appetizers(calamari, fries), pizza, & the namesake calzones, & you should come out ahead. The European feel of dining al fresco out on the sidewalk, & the priceless people watching it affords, is the edge Calzone’s has over other restaurants in the hood. This is Columbus Avenue, major real estate. Rose Pistola down the street also has tables outside, but not nearly as many, & that block isn’t quite as colorful as this one. These are definitely prime seats on a nice day or night. Worth a visit for this experience alone. 3 stars.

Either I’ve been here too many times or this place is loosing it. That way or the other I was extremely disappointed with my last visit here which is probably the last one. Next time I will stand as much as needed in the line for Tonny pizza, or chose one of the many other excellent restaurants around. The sidewalk seating does not worth it that much. We waited for someone to take our drinks order way too long while sitting in the sun, we were not served the bread they usually serve as you sit down and when we finally got it, it was after we were served our entries. The bread was served without butter(they used to serve butter with it). I looked at the table next to us and saw they were served a half stick of butter in its original paper cover as you buy it from the grocery store — very bizarre, so I gave up asking for butter. The man server insisted to speak fluent Spanish with us although we kept staring at him, telling him we have no idea what he says. I don’t care he thought we’re Spanish, but it should have been enough when we told him once, yet he kept speaking Spanish and only at the third time we told him angrily we have no idea what he says he switched to English. My daughter ordered fettuccini Alfredo with chicken and her dish tasted nothing but disgusting! It tasted as if the chicken was spoiled! I did not finish my salad after finding a piece of plastic in it. They took it off the bill but still –yucky! I believe it came from the cover of the bacon they cut into the salad. The woman server who took my salad order saw it necessary to tell me TWICE: you know Panchetta(one of the salad ingredients) is bacon! I told her yes I know, but she repeated it slowly as if she’s talking to a difficult child: panchetta is bacon you know? (Did I look to her like I’m in a need of a diet? Did I ask what panchetta is? Do you call me fat?!?) I ate panchetta when this server was yet in her diapers. A real panchetta. In Italy. I said again very slow: yes I know… But it’s a good idea to leave it out of the plate since I’m trying to save calories.(Do you call me fat?!?) Not only the panchetta… ahm… Excuse me, bacon ended up in my dish but also a piece of its plastic cover ended up in there. We were extremely upset and left without finishing our food. Never coming back here. Ever again.

I was actually thoroughly underwhelmed by Calzone’s. I stopped in for drinks and some food because there was outdoor seating and it was busy, which is usually a good sign. The drinks were tasty(a lemon drop and their strawberry lemonade), but the food was incredibly lacking in flavor. The pizza looked delicious but the dough was floury and flavorless and the pepperoni was more like large cooked salami — very meaty in taste, which may be good for some. The service was good, our waitress was nice. We asked someone other than our waitress for bread though and did not receive any.

We came here with a large group on a Saturday night and found a table for 9 right away. The place has a great vibe and good food. The prices were not to far off for that part of the city either. I ordered the margarita pizza and it was great. Not too cheesy and a lot of flavor. I tried my wife’s pasta and it was good too. The portions were big and you will most likely ask for a bag to take the leftovers home. Really liked the fact that we didn’t have to wait over an hour like the other restaurants. The service was great and they went out of their way to keep our drinks filled and responding to all of our requests. I’ll go back again in the future.

I came here for the first time in 2008 with a group of friends. I ordered a salad and discovered an 3 inch piece of tree twig in my salad. After letting our waiter know, the waiter and manager both tried to convince me that the twig was actually part of the salad… so uh no, no thanks. No more future visits for me to Calzone’s! Fast Forward to Summer 2015, I am back here again for a dinner date. Aside from the complimentary bread, we ordered the Caesar salad, house-made ravioli and the shellfish cappellini. couple notes: *Caesar salad was a pass for me. Bland taste and I dislike the uncut appearance of the baby romaine. *House-made ravioli sauce had great flavor. Sadly the ravioli was not cooked long enough, it could have used another minute to boil. I still enjoyed it though. *Date loved the shellfish cappellini. * Bread was not exciting. Lukewarm and kind of tough to chew on. The service and outdoor seating area is what separates this place from the other Italian joints in North Beach. The food here is adequate for me, but I probably should have tried the calzone or the pizza since those dishes are actually in the restaurant’s title. If you want a great people-watching spot with average food, Calzone’s will serve your purpose. You want authentic italian food? Move on along down Columbus and keep looking. I am happy to report there was no sign of tree twig in any of my food this last visit lol.

Any restaurant with an outdoor seating option like this will automatically get an extra star! Delicious calzones, though the ham in the Italian calzone tasted like deli meat. Lasagna was good, but pretty average. Service was rather slow, and they gave us a block of store-bought butter with the wrapper still intact when asked for butter to go with our bread. 3 stars for the food, but one extra star for the outdoor option. Go here for dinner and go to Café Greco across the street for dessert and coffee.

I really like this place! My boyfriend and I were wondering around the North Beach area of San Francisco and stumbled upon Calzone’s and decided to give it a try. We walked in around 8pm on a Friday night and we were seated right away. Ambiance of the restaurant was so amazing. Typical city restaurant with a cool vibe and décor. I could sit in this restaurant for hours just admiring their décor… I loved it that much! I ordered an Italian Calzone and my boyfriend ordered a Pizza. We both loved our meals… so fresh and tasty. I also ordered a glass of wine, which was pretty good too. Prices were about on par with the city, the bill coming to about $ 40 before tip. Service was pretty good as well and our server was very friendly! I’d eat here again the next time I’m in the city! Cheers!
