A friend and I came here for the NYE prix fixe dinner. We made a reservation for one of the earlier seatings, so it was only 4 courses instead of 6. The space is hugeeee(at least compared to typical SF restaurants), with really cute décor! There are these orange scalloped awnings inside over the large window-like openings for the open kitchen, and quilted, patterned seat covers. Service was great, and it wasn’t that busy when we showed up. 1) Cocktails — All the cocktails have such cute names(a christmas tale, je t’aime je t’aime, love at sea, and more)!! I totally gushed about them while I was there. My friend and I both ordered different cocktails, and they were really well-made and balanced. 2) Bread — This was a really bad first impression for the meal. The bread was completely cold and way too hard. I barely got through a couple bites of it even with butter. 3) Next up was some kind of beet, feta, walnut salad with a soft boiled egg — pretty decent.(I might be a little biased because I love soft boiled eggs) 4) Lobster bisque — Their take on such a cliché soup was very different actually. It was much more lobster-y and less creamy than usual, but still very rich and tasty, with pieces of shredded lobster meat. However, the fishy seafood taste might be a little strong for some tastes. 5) My friend got a duck entrée, and I had trout. The portion size for the duck was surprisingly big. I would compare it to a fairly large steak, and my friend couldn’t even finish it. It was slightly more rare than medium rare for my taste, but the meat was tender and flavorful. The trout that I had was a little underwhelming. 6) Dessert was a layered cake with coffee, chocolate, and pistachio flavors — Pretty good but not amazing. A little too sweet. Overall, the ambience is really nice and definitely a cute restaurant. My experience with the NYE prix fixe was not great, but I would be willing to give it another shot on a regular night in the future.

Whenever I experience French food, it is always the fancy schmancy places with Michelin stars and such, but I’ve always been curious to try some of the ACTUAL French dishes such as cassoulet, coq au vin, etc. and have never found many restaurants in the Bay that cook those or at least do it well… However, when I saw this place, I really wanted to try it out… I went for restaurant week where they were specially putting cassoulet on the menu. It was pretty amazing and I really enjoyed it. Now, they don’t normally have this item on the menu but they do feature other French dishes such as coq au vin, veal blanquette, poulet, etc. If they are anything like the cassoulet, then I have found a place in sf that can serve classic French dishes. I’m also intrigued by the number of events and cooking classes they offer and will probably be back for one of those. Such a great find right by the Civic Center!

We enjoyed the chicken dish, trout, gnocchi and tart dishes. Great service. Would be good for groups of six — 10 for dinner vs. a romantic dinner for two.

Was in SF for 6 days and the best meal I had by far. Excellent cocktails and the two homemade brews are delicious. Great atmosphere for happy hour, group dinner or any gathering. The raw bar, especially the shrimp, is top notch and the entrees were excellent. In our group, people really enjoyed the sea bass and steak frites. I ordered the veal and it was perfect. Everytime I go back to SF for work or pleasure, I’m eating Bön Marche.

The food was amazing – couldn’t ask for anything better – especially the shrimp, oysters, etc. from the raw bar. Additionally, the drink were great, and the service even better. Especially a good place for big groups – Bön Marche really makes for a great time!

I had a fantastic meal here with great friends and I cannot wait to return. Personally, I had some oysters and the steak tartare… both delicious. The drinks are exquisite and diverse(I had the Samouraî which is a delicious japanese whiskey cocktail). Very chic décor that is timeless and inviting. And all things considered, the restaurant is not loud. Our servers were incredibly professional. I wish I could remember more, but like I said… the drinks were delicious…

We had dinner at Bön Marché last night before a show at the Orpheum. We arrived for a 5:45pm reservation, and curtain was 7:30. We advised our server before ordering dinner about our theater plans, and ordered only entrees. The restaurant was not busy at 5:45, our dinner arrived quickly, and by 6:40 we were done with our meals and ready for dessert and coffee. Unfortunately, at this point the restaurant had filled up and it was difficult to attract our server’s attention. When we did order our dessert and coffee(and asked our server about our theater timing) there was a long delay between when the order was placed and when our dessert arrived — so much so that we rushed our desserts, had to skip(cancel) coffee, and had to run to the theater, spoiling an otherwise nice meal. At no point during the wait did our server acknowledge we were waiting, offer to check on our order, or even make eye contact with our table so we could flag her down. When I paid our bill, I was not happy with the service, but left a tip of slightly more than 10% on a $ 200+ bill. Our server, who clearly knew we were aggravated at this point(and running for our show), picked up the check as we were getting up, looked at the tip line and immediately confronted me asking what my problem was with her service. When I explained about the long delay in dessert and coffee, she told us that«they were brewing a new pot of coffee for us», and that«it wasn’t her fault». Absolutely no apologies or acknowledgement that we were rushed or that she wasn’t paying attention. She was clearly irate, and at this point, so was I. I understand that restaurant work is difficult, and everyone has bad days, but I don’t spend hundreds of dollars on dinner out to leave aggravated. I won’t be back.

I was at Bön Marche for a business lunch. Located in the Twitter building in the very Tenderloin area of San Francisco. I was excited to learn about a new spot in the area. My first impressions: — The restaurant décor and interior works hard at transporting you to the French countryside with all the yellow on the décor and if I remember correctly the rim of the plates. IMO, the designer failed to pull it all together since you can still see the cold concrete flooring and a very industrial downtown feel was very present. I was not transported to the cozy, richness in history and romance that the French are known for. — I was not welcomed with the aromas of spices and delicious French cuisine. Oh yeah, snap out of it. I am not in France. — The food for lunch was ok. My friend ordered the charcuterie board and cheese, while I ordered a salad and the steak tartare. — Service was prompt and friendly.

Interior and ambiance is way better than the food. Average bread and not very fresh escargot. From start to finish, every course wasn’t very good. Steak was average and beignets were normal doughnuts with okay jam and custard. I would say this spot is more American than French and definitely overpriced for what you get. Much better French dining can be found in SF.

Came here with two friends for dinner on a Friday night, including one from Paris. The ambiance here is strange, almost like«Night at the Roxbury» inside-outside.(Reminds me a bit of RN74, but much better executed over there). Might be nicer in the daytime? The service is very attentive, almost to the point of not being able to read the table and interrupting frequently. However, when I ordered a salad that I didn’t enjoy, they took it back and brought me a different one. My friends started with the foie gras with hazelnuts — enjoyable! I had oysters(miyagi, I think) which were refreshing. Next I had the warm crottin salad which I didn’t enjoy(a bit cold!), as mentioned a bit earlier the service was happy to replace, with a salade verte. We wrapped up the meal with an apple tart with vanilla ice cream — incredible! Really very good. The menu was wonderfully French, but the décor was a bit strange for me. Lots of great French places in the city, not sure this is my favorite one.

Bön Marche is a novel & charming place to drink, especially if you’re a Francophile or just enjoy cutesy décor. With such expertly-made cocktails and professional servers at the bar, we felt well taken care of in the booze department. Food, on the other hand, was far too pricey for the portion sizes. Everything comes out looking like a miniature version of what you expected. One exception: the cod brandade. Very generous for $ 7, comes in a petite casserole with crostini. A good substantial bar snack. As for the«bon marche» ambiance, I was afraid it might feel hokey or Disneyland-esque, but they actually pull it off. It’s almost like they brought an outdoor French neighborhood indoors, with cute café tables, yellow awnings, and a flower shop in front. All the furniture is authentic-looking and good quality. A slice of upscale Parisian life in SF. With interesting people watching along Market St. Note: it’s part of the Twitter building complex of chi-chi businesses. Again, drinks are reasonable, but food is more of a splurge.

3.8 stars The Frenchman scrolled through my bookmark list and selected Bön Marché as the restaurant he wanted to celebrate his birthday at. While waiting in the airport for our departure to France, I rang Bön Marché to make a reservation. Their website vendor did not allow online bookings for my large group of 15. When the host answered the phone, she said the manager was busy but would call me back. I informed her that a call would not work as I was flying out of the country(I had hoped this would create a sense of urgency), but he could email me. Fast forward 3 days and I never received an email. So, I reached out requesting my email be sent to management and received an email along with an apology from a ‘reservationist’. ~ Strike 1 — no follow up from the manager regarding my reservation ~ Strike 2 — after spending 3 days emailing back and forth the reservationist passes me over to the events coordinator, due to the size of my group. Why she did not do that at the very beginning is beyond me. ~ Strike 3 — after specifying the pre-fix menu with the reservationist, the events coordinator proceeded to ask me the very same questions I’d just spent 6 days answering. While on my vacation. In France. ANNOYED!!! Mind you, all correspondence was forwarded to her. The entire process began on October 30th ending on November 13th, the night before the dinner. My expectations of this restaurant were nil. Well wouldn’t you know Bön Marché actually payed attention to the utter disappointment of my reservation experience. Not only did the restaurant offer complimentary champagne for our party, they also provided us with the private dinning room at no extra cost. Our group arrived practically at the same time(thanks to my ‘please do your best to arrive on time’ message) so the greeting from the host was as if she had been waiting for us for days! She was extremely excited to seat us and knew my name. I wish I could have recorded the expression and comments my group made upon entry of the private room. It was like sitting in room decorated for a scene in a movie, where the modern family sits to have thanksgiving dinner. It was beautiful! Fall leaves on the table, large chandeliers overhead, the walls lined with classic French manuscripts and a room made larger by the floor to ceiling glass walls! We started with an apéritif, champagne followed by a seafood platter including oysters, clams, shrimp and crab. Even those who were not seafood fans were impressed with the quality of the seafood as well as the display. Two of those platters at $ 60/ea were plenty to wet everyones pallet. Following the seafood platter was the Roasted Butternut Squash Salad. Served slightly chilled, the squash was tender, juicy and buttery. I have no idea what it was prepared in, but it was good! For our second course, everyone had a choice between the Chicken Grand Mere or the Fine Herbes sausage. Both were absolutely delicious! The chicken was served with pearl onions, so basically every small onion was soaked in the chicken sauce, which included bacon. Fantastic! I chose the Sausage dish and while mine did not have as many extras as the chicken, it was still as succulent and bursting with flavor. Under normal circumstances I would split a large plate like that in half, but it was so good in the potato purée and juice I just kept eating. Did I mention it was house made sausage? I do not think anyone left a morsel on their plate in the end! Having just returned from Bretagne where Far Breton is a favorite, I was disappointed in the dessert. The menu says custard. It wasn’t’ even that. It was more like a non-sugared pudding. No one particularly enjoyed the dessert. Overall the restaurant experience was satisfying. The many servers on hand for our party made for a seamless experience. Wine glasses were never empty, plates were removed promptly, the table remained spotless, the bread was always warm and the butter was always soft. Pet peeve of mine… cold butter that is. Had I not experienced the poor customer service at the start of my reservation process, Bön Marché would have received a 5 star rating from me. Since I do venture to the gym located behind Bön Marché, there may be an opportunity for them to positively impress me again.

Wow, Perfect spot. They’ve got oysters, they’ve got cocktails, they’ve got fresh baked bread. And that’s just the beginning… Can’t imagine a better spot to relax your feet, kickback, and enjoy yourself. The recommendations from William, our bartender were fantastic. We slid into the bar without a reservation, had the gnocchi, cheese platter, and much more. As a long time San Francisco native, I’m very particular on the new restaurants with the big impressive venues. So many restaurants come and go in San Francisco. This one, got it right. Opulent enough to impress a date, yet not over done. I would strongly recommend going, enjoy downtown San Francisco, and let your waiter or bartender take you on a journey through Paris. With a San Francisco touch. I will be back. Maybe just for a coffee and a bite after some shopping, or for a full meal. Thank you William, and thank you Scott.

Where is Bön Marche: Most San Franciscans are aware of the recently opened Twitter Market which has become quite the foodie destination. With the Spring opening of Dirty Water, followed by the recent opening of Bön Marche it’s a hot spot! For those of you lucky people working in the Twitter Building you’re spoiled! What is Bön Marche: Bön Marché is inspired by the grand, bustling brasseries of Paris and the fantastic local ingredients of the Bay Area. It’s not only a Restaurant but it has a Bar, their own Brewery and even Flowers you can buy on the go and take home with you. It’s beyond adorable! What is the food like: The menu features classics like steak frites & French onion soup, alongside original, modern dishes. Guests can grab a dozen oysters from the raw bar or find house-made charcuterie, bountiful salads & beautiful desserts for lunch, dinner, & happy hour. When ordering a drink at happy hour each drink includes a choice of a delicious Happy Hour dish: Charcuterie or Assorted Cheese and Bread. Pretty unbelievable that’s included and it’s DELICIOUS! Who is the Chef: Husband & wife Matt Sieger & Rikki Garcia oversee the kitchen as executive chef and pastry chef, working closely with Mercer Restaurant Group executive chef Mark Liberman. What else will you find besides food and wine: True to the original definition of «brasserie», Bön Marché houses a fully functional brewery, where they produce original beers in classic French styles, brewed by Master Cicerone Rich Higgins(show above) to be food-friendly and crowd pleasing. Thanks for checking out my post I hope you enjoy dining with The JetSetting Fashionista. Emily

Quel dommage. I have to admit I was marginally disappointed by the latest enterprise from co-partners Matt Semmelhack and executive chef Mark Liberman because they set quite a high bar with AQ, one of the best of the seasonally driven farm-to-table restaurants of recent vintage(review: ). The ambiance and food meshed nicely in that space, a culinary symbiosis they aren’t quite able to duplicate at Bön Marche. At 7,200 square feet, the restaurant is absurdly cavernous, and while I normally don’t complain about wide-open spaces, this one made Jamie W. and I feel like seahorses suspended in a large fish tank where Twitter employees pass by gawking with alarming regularity. While the owners appear to be mimicking a multi-purpose Parisian department store rather than a simple brasserie, it just wasn’t the mood we were looking for that evening. We started with cocktails because it seemed to be the renaissance thing to do at the outset. Each is $ 12 and accompanied by a quote from a classic French filmmaker. I went all Truffaut with The Last Metro because it contains Pimms #1, one of my favorite liqueurs, and mixes it with Dubonnet Rouge Montenegro, Strawberries and Bitter Lemon. The result was a refreshing tall one with a striped straw that would have looked appropriate on the Riviera. Jamie was less fortunate with his choice, the Belle de Jour served in a camping mug over packed shaved ice. It had Palo Cortado Sherry, Coconut Cordial, Clarified Pineapple and Amargo Bitters(photo: ). The ice took up so much space that the kick of the sherry was hardly felt much to Jamie’s chagrin. While sipping, we received the complimentary French bread with a ramekin of creamed butter(photo: ). This provided a good segue to our salad orders which were $ 11 each. Jamie ordered the traditional Frisée Aux Lardons Salade which contained chicory, chunks of rendered bacon and a poached egg(photo: ). It was a generous portion by any means, but the unnamed dressing simply overwhelmed the dish. I decided to go with the unusual Warm Crottin Cheese Salade. Fresh nectarine slices were mixed with chopped endive and walnuts, and the strong goat cheese was served in little rounds(photo: ). While it resembled more of a cheese plate than a salad, it just didn’t come together for me as the flavors felt like they were arguing with each other. For our entrees, we went in different directions entirely. Jamie had the $ 21 Fava Bean and Herb Ravioli with Parmesan and Mushrooms, which was buttery to the point of excess(photo: ). Still this was one of the more successful dishes of the night with the wild mushrooms the standout. I ordered the more traditional $ 29 Steak Frites with the sliced steak prepared medium rare. It came with a pat of Roquefort cheese, a small pile of watercress, and the jus was infused with cognac(photo: ). The steak was a tad chewy for the meticulous presentation of the plate, but what saved the dish were the perfectly prepared Pomme Frites served in an aluminum cup ready for both of us to nibble on. We also decided to share a small plate of the $ 7 Mushroom Beignets which we were anticipating would look like the ones served at the Café du Monde in New Orleans or at least the beignets at Brenda’s French Soul Food. No, they looked a bit like bird droppings, but at least they tasted much better than they looked(photo: ). Despite our mixed feelings on all the savory plates, that didn’t stop us from ordering the $ 10 desserts. We were surprised how simple the selection was compared to the previous dishes. Jamie went with the Blueberry Tart with Lemon Cream, which was lovely to look at and quite fresh-tasting with the tart blueberries needing little adornment to improve the dish(photo: ). Perhaps because I was disappointed by the look of those Mushroom Beignets, I felt compensation was due with the French Beignets which came with Lemon Verbena and Blackberry Sauces(photo: ). Indeed these looked like the more traditional beignets, and they came piping hot, so much so that third-degree burns were a distinct possibility. Regardless, double-dipping the five beignets in the two sauces was quite a treat at the end of our meal. I only with our dining experience was more consistent than it was. Perhaps I should Tweet about it. FOOD — 3 stars… French brasserie fare that didn’t really transcend the palate, a surprise given the potential of a Semmelhack-Liberman combo AMBIANCE — 3 stars… a bit like dining in an airplane hangar SERVICE — 3.5 stars… our waiter tried very hard and kudos for his efforts even though the rhythm felt off throughout TOTAL — 3 stars… middling for all the effort

4.5 stars. This place is in mid-market and sort of stumbled into it when my friend and I tried to find a place to go close to the ACT strand. Pretty nice ambience. Open and airy. But the food is phenomenal, which was unexpected for a place that’s right next to the Market across from civic center. Escargot — solid starter, like the combination of ingredients. Not as buttery or heavy as in the traditional escargot dishes. Very pretty. Eggplant caviar with fava bean reduction. Love the green complement of the fava bean reduction. Bringing in the best summer ingredients in SF. The eggplant is served slightly cool with structure, almost of a granita texture. Very innovative. Sautéed halibut. Cooked to perfection. Just the right texture of the fish and all of the ingredients in ratatouille brightly supports the flavor of the fish and still maintains a bit of crunch which is difficult to do in a ratatouille setting. Great wine list by the glass — I had the Sicilian red and Sancerre from Loire valley. The Sicilian red was excellent, with a bit of the influence of the volcanic soil to give it complexity without giving up the femininity of the wine. Sancerre is solid. I didn’t quite care for the Chenin blanc which had more minerality and earthiness to it but my friend liked it.

It’s obnoxiously adorable. Flower market in the front(a display? forreal? either way, cute!), yellow awnings, homey wooden tables. The dishes and utensils and menus literally made us squeal in delight. This is the kind of place where you would expect Julia Child to come out from behind some counter and bring us a roast chicken. Jessica was really helpful and sweet, and took the time to explain the menu line for line. It’s pathetic how much I have to guess my way through a French menu. Cheese of what? Is that word a vegetable or a place in France? What we ended up with, and my thoughts: 1. Raw oysters($ 3.50 each) — Super fresh. Yummy mignonette. I will come back just for the oysters and to try the rest of the raw bar. 2. Charcuterie($ 6 each): Jambon de Bayonne(2 slices), Cervelas de Lyon(3 slices). It came with a bit of mustard, a couple pickled items. I don’t know how this is possible, but the star of the entire charcuterie platter was the plate itself(OMG — where can I buy a set of 6? These would be so great for a French themed tea party at my house), and the grilled bread that came along with it was rustic and perfect with the meat. I’m curious to try more. 3. Brandade de moreau($ 7): YESSS. Best value. Huge portion, plenty for probably 5 – 6 people if you’re sharing some other bites. It’s rich and salty, so you don’t need a whole lot. Kind of wished I had more of that grilled bread to smother it on. My date and I split the leftovers so we could eat on a grilled cheese. Uh-huh. 4. Mushroom beignets($ 7): My imagination really took me on a magic carpet ride on this one. Kind of wish it had been fried dough stuffed with mushrooms. But alas, it was not. Still good. 5. Warm Crottin Cheese salad($ 11): There was a lot of strong flavors happening in this one. A tremendous amount of cumin, we suspect. Wasn’t a huge fan of the cheese. Perhaps too pungent after all the other dishes. The nectarines were refreshing and crisp, and the different textures of the salad was lovely. 6.Escargot Persillade($ 15): Buttery. I liked the pesto, but the puff pastry was a bit dense from all the oil. It was just okay. Worth trying, but I personally wouldn’t order it again. 7. Plum Clafoutis($ 10): Mixed reviews. The anise cookies were dry and spongey, but had a nice light anise flavor. The custard was really good, except for the parts that were burnt and tasted a little like cigarette butts. I think Bön Marche is overall a very nice addition to this area. I look forward to coming back and trying a burger or an entrée!

3.5STARS French cuisine is one of my favs. Or maybe it’s the French waiters with seXy accents that I love so much. Gotta get your oven all warmed up for«dessert” – am I right, ladies… and gentlemen? *wink wink* When I heard that Bön Marche was the latest restaurant to open in the Twitter building, I was ecstatic since I work nearby. From the AQ and TBD team, Bön Marche opened on Friday, August 28th. We came for dinner on their second opening night. The French menu is divided into nine sections: charcuterie($ 6), salads($ 11), quick bites($ 7), soups($ 9), raw bar(MP?), apps($ 15-$ 18), entrees($ 21), plates of «resistance»($ 29), and sides($ 6). Nothing is over $ 29 which I think is fair for this gentrifying area. Don’t have your heart set on anything on the online menu. I was excited for the bone marrow and foie gras but they’re were not available. There’s a full bar. House cocktails are $ 12 and wine by the glass were $ 9-$ 20. ~ * ~ D R I N K S ~ * ~ *The Last Metro: Pimms No. 1, Dubonnet Rouge Montenegro, Strawberries, Bitter Melon($ 12): *Love At Sea: Sutton Cellars Vermouth, Benedictine, Carrot & Walnut Infused Campari, Pernod($ 12): Both cocktails were on the fruiter, sweeter side. I opted for a gin & tonic for my third drink which I liked better. They charge an extra $ 1 for the tonic which is odd. ~ * ~ F O O D ~ * ~ *Mushroom Beignets($ 7): 4STARS
*Steak Tartare, pomme ‘pont neuf’ salad($ 18): 4STARS : *French Onion Soup: oxtail broth, toast, gruyère cheese($ 9): 3STARS *Escargot Persillade, puff pastry, vegetable crudité($ 15): 3STARS *Steak Frites, watercress, roquefort, cognac jus($ 29): 1STAR *Almond Cake, peaches, vanilla ice cream($ 10): 3STARS Having dined at AQ and TBD, my experience at Bön Marche mirrors both; nothing was really memorable. I couldn’t help but compare each dish to better renditions I had at Chez Maman, Absinthe, Monsieur Benjamin, Bistro Central Parc, etc. Let’s start with the good, the Mushroom Beignets were not as I imagined(not a square pastry) but were delicious morsels of a creamy mushroom concoction. The Steak Tartare was plentiful and the large yolk blanketed every tidbit. It’s difficult to mess this dish up but it’s hard to beat the tartare at neighboring Dirty Water. The French Onion Soup was ok, needed more cheese. Maybe it’s just me but when I order French Onion Soup, I envision a crown of bubbly, ooooey gooey cheese crusted down the edges of the bowl. The addition of the puff pastry was a nice take Escargot Persillade but I feel it was missing something. If you didn’t get a bite with an escargot, the puff pastry itself was dry. We opted for a classic French dish as a shared entrée: Steak Frites. It was terrible. The sirloin was tepid as the slab of roquefort butter didn’t even melt. It was dry, tough, and livery. The fries were limp. We alerted our waitress and she offered to re-do the dish. We were pretty full at that point, and it I suspected the issue was due to the beef quality so we declined. She was kind enough to take it off our bill. We ended dinner with the Almond Cake which was underwhelming. There wasn’t much taste to it. ~ * ~ S E R V I C E ~ * ~ Service does make up for a lot and I thought the staff was great(no French accents – boo!). Everyone from the hostess, our waitress, to the busboys were very friendly, swift, and attentive. As we were waiting for our order, a noticed neighboring tables firing a million questions to the servers and they handled each one with grace. There were opening week kinks such as lag in service but I’m sure they will iron those out once they get into their groove. ~ * ~ A M B I A N C E /D E C O R ~ * ~ I loved the large, casual open space with an open kitchen and that tables weren’t squished together: . There’s three separate areas: bar, dining room, and lounge. Even though it was busy, didn’t have issues with the acoustics so we were able to have a conversation without having to raise our voices. Not ambiance related but I have to note that I found their website to be hard on the eyes with the bright canary yellow background and white font. The yellow was glaring then I had my face smashed into the screen to try to decipher the font. ~ * ~ P A R K I N G ~ * ~ Easy street parking before 6 pm. The bart station is a block away. Having worked in the area for over seven years, mid-market can be super sketch and is hobo central. Step into the Twitter building and it’s a whole other world because of Twitter, and bougie businesses like The Market, Dirty Water, and now Bön Marche. While walking to office this morning, a guy had a screaming and kicking match… with a metal pole. Sorry to disappoint y’all that it wasn’t a techie.
