Allen Fu Hair Studio

Allen Fu is the hair whisperer! I have the most unruly, curly, frizzy hair that used to give stylists hives before I started going to Allen for keratin treatments. I have followed him through 2 salons until he opened his own. I feel like a movie star walking out of his salon after a keratin treatment and a cut (did I mention he is Edward Scissorhands too?) I literally had cars stop traffic and men open doors for me!
I live in Massachusetts but travel to SF a couple times a year to visit family. When I do I always see my west coast stylist Allen Fu!

Trevor Giles is hands down my favorite hair stylist. I found him a few years ago and have been going to him ever since. He is the only person i will let color my hair. He hand paints each strip and does an amazing job blending all the colors. Plus he trims up the dead ends and brings life back to my damaged hair.
Not to mention he is the cutest person ever and has the best personality. I always look forward to our appointments, I recommend him to all my friends in SF!

I finally found Trevor! Thank goodness! Our 10 year old daughter is mixed with black, white and filipino. She has coarse, thick quinky curly hair and as you can imagine, it can be extremely rough to manage. I’ve always wanted to try out the Keratin treatment on her hair, but was always worried about who I would let do it. I’m all about reading reviews especially when it comes to services. That’s how I originally found Trevor. He had tons of wonderful reviews from a past salon he worked at regarding his blowouts/​keratin treatments. I knew he would have to be the one to do our daughters hair and it came out so lovely. It looks super shiny and healthy and feels so soft! It was such a pleasure to finally meet Trevor. I loved his energy and the fact that he was so kind to my daughter. She’s completely excited about her new hair. Oh, and did I mention we drove all the way from Stockton just to see him?! Yes! Although our commute home was over 3 hours, I have no regrets because my little one is happy… and that makes me happy! The only thing is I wish I looked on Unilocal and took advantage of the 20% discount being that it was our first visit, but maybe next time. Trevor, Jenesys wants me to say «thank you» again. She felt like a super star at your salon today. :)

It’s a rare and special moment when someone helps you see yourself with a fresh perspective. I still remember my first haircut from Allen — he designed it in just such a way that it could be worn parted to either side. It was a subtle change, but incredibly creative and versatile! He’s been my regular stylist ever since. Highly recommended.

One of my most disappointing and annoying experiences ever.
It started all nice and gravy when I made my appointment 3 months in advance. At the time, I had mentioned I had a Groupon for specific services and I was able to request my stylist (because my Groupon didn’t specify that information). Originally the guy on the phone had offered me a weekday appointment, but I explained that I live in South Bay and would be coming from there so there was no way I’d be able to swing a weeknight appointment and the guy seemed understanding. He explained that there were no openings because they were booked for the 2 – 3 months, entirely understandable. So I was able to make my appointment.
Day of appointment comes, bright and early at 10am I had woken up extra early just to make sure I’d be able to make it to my appointment. I was super excited since I’d had many disappointing haircuts in the past. I get there at 10am and my stylist was working on someone else (WTF). I talk to the girl at the front and explained that I had an appointment with him at 10am and I had a Groupon. They weren’t having it. They basically told me that I didn’t have an appointment and tried to push me off to another stylist who I saw had a Living Social. But hello (WTF), I had a Groupon and an appointment (not with the Living Social stylist). What makes matters worse was that the Living Social stylist wasn’t even at the salon at the time; pretty sure that shows I didn’t have an appointment with him!
Definitely some of the worst customer service ever.
They should have outlined in the Groupon if it was limited to a specific stylist. Before I had made my appointment I had seen some Living Socials for Glenn, but my Groupon hadn’t specified a stylist so I thought I was free to choose and at the time I made my appointment, I WAS able to choose.
I also didn’t feel comfortable being offloaded to another stylist who wasn’t even present at the time. He wasn’t even there to be able to speak for himself to deal with this situation which would have been totally unfair to him as well. In addition, after all that time I spent traveling to the salon I would’ve probably needed to wait for the other stylist to show up and to wait for any additional appointments he may have had that day.
Totally disorganized, horrible customer service, and waste of my time.

I spent months trying to find someone that knew how to cut my hair. Based on a friends recommendation, I found Glenn Gustafik.
Not only have I received amazing haircuts form Glenn, but he has taught me a ton about my own hair. His teaching background transfers over to his cuts, and he is able to elaborate on the techniques she is using and why. I have yet to find a style in a magazine that he can’t replicate, and he has shown the utmost patience and excitement with every change I want to make.
Everyone I have recommended to Glenn has raved about their experience as well.

Trevor Giles is an amazing stylist and I followed him to this salon. He is a wizard with color and balayage highlights. I get compliments on my shimmery blonde hair all the time. People ask if it’s natural. ;) It’s all to Trevor’s credit.
Recently, a wedding hairstylist (not from this salon!) severely heat-​damaged my hair with a flatiron. My hair was fried, and my natural curl pattern was all messed up. I came crying to Trevor, and he saved the day. He did a gentle Keratin treatment (only lightly using the flat iron) to infuse my hair with keratin protein. It really worked! My curls are once again soft and smooth. I can’t say enough good things about Trevor!

I first met Allen a few years ago when he was working at Patrick Evan Salon. I had a Groupon and got a great Brazilian blowout and haircut. I did not go back because the prices were too extravagant for me. I tried a number of other stylists and salons, but none were comparable. I had to go back to Allen to try his new salon. It is a premium haircut and definitely worth the price. He really knows how to cut and style hair that is suitable to your hair type and face. I have stiff hair and not much of it. He gave me a haircut with great movement and volume. He first cuts your hair when it is wet. Then he blows it out and spends a lot of time trimming your hair while it is dry to see how your hair naturally falls and moves. He really customizes each haircut and takes great pride in his work.

I followed Trevor G. to Allen Fu Hair Studio. I recently cut off 8 inches of my chemically straighten hair to go natural… I wanted some color with the cut but I didn’t want my curls to be dry or disappear. Trevor did exactly what I wanted. Thanks Trevor!

Glenn Gustafik knows what’s trendy and stylish, but also considers face shape and features before creating a perfect cut/​color for his customers. He made great recommendations for me but was also still able to stay within the parameters that I need as a performer who can’t change her look all that much.
Glenn is precise, intuitive, talented, timely, considerate, fun and genuinely caring.
He also gives a badass head massage– and guarantees his work.

Allen did my hair cut and Balayage highlights on my short hair. The color is so great and it makes me look more energetic.
Nikolai cut my hair twice. He pays a great attention to your needs and transforms my hair to totally different style & makes sure my hair matches my personality.
Trevor cut & color my hair. I did not know that iron flat style hair fits my face until Trevor did his so-​called experiment. It worked perfectly.
That is why I say that they have talented hairstylists.

This review is for Glenn Gustafik, my absolute new favorite hair stylist. I absolutely adore him and what he did for my hair!
I am not always an easy customer; I’m not too picky but I also never quite know what I want. I think in terms of adjectives, or emotional words — «bold», «bright», «fun» — and that makes chemistry with a stylist so important for me. After finding him through Style Seat, Glenn heard me and helped guide me from a lackluster strawberry blonde color that I was growing out to this brilliant Vermillion, that kind of stop-​people-​on-​the-​street color that I wanted but didn’t know how to ask for.
And his cuts! Glenn has a lot of history with bob cuts (which are deceptively tricky to deliver), and he took my «vidal sassoon meets 1920s» direction and made it not only gorgeous, but something that really works for my hair type (thin) and face (not thin). I was walking on air after leaving the salon.
The best part is that in six weeks, I can go back for a free bang trim and tone. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

I got a deal on livingsocial and was really excited for a new haircut. My stylist was Glenn And he was great! He helped me making a decision on my haircut. I have long fine hair and wanted something new.
His professional eye fast knew what would fit my face and the cut looks super cute. I really like his tips on how to style it quickly and liked that he took in consideration that I’ll probably get lazy over the time and won’t do a blow out. So he cut my hair in a way that it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance and basically falls on it’s own and still looks like it has a lot of volume on the second day.

I moved here from Sweden almost 4 years ago and it’s been a hassle for me to find a great hair dresser that knows what I want. I always go for the Brigit Bardot/​Marianne faithful hair but somehow I looked like Joan Jett everytime I left other hair salons (still a good look though but not me). So when I saw Meg at Allen Fu hair salon I had been cutting my own hair (IKEA scissors over the sink) for almost 2 years! Meg didn’t judge, listened to what I wanted, didn’t cut it to much, not to little and while being the sweetest girl! I’m super happy with my hair and will definetly come back for another hair cut!

Allen Fu isn’t a hair stylist… he’s an artist. I’ve followed Allen to 4 different salons over the years and will continue to do so until I’m old and grey. I couldn’t be happier he now has his own studio. It’s a lovely space just off Union Square so it’s super convenient to do a little shopping before or after.
I’m part African American and part European with very complicated hair. It’s always driven me nuts until a friend recommended Allen. He knows exactly how to cut my thick, wavy hair so it looks amazing not just when I walk out the salon, but weeks/​months later when I’m styling my hair at home. Allen even offers free «bang trims» in between haircuts. But it’s not just a quick touch up. He’ll spend 20 – 30 minutes giving me a full haircut making my hair look gorgeous… all without charging me a dime.
I also get Brazilian Blowout treatments at Allen’s salon. The fact that I can wash my hair, let it air dry and it looks great is nothing short of life-​changing. Yes, I said it. Allen Fu changed my life for the better. Make an appointment with Allen and you’ll be strutting around town with a fabulous head of head-​turning hair too!

Allen has done an amazing job of modernizing my style and keeping it fresh at an affordable price. I have referred several friends who can attest to his ability to transform a look into something that both compliments your style and updates your appearance.

I’ve used Allen for YEARS after my old stylist from Vidal left the area and pointed me to him. I’ve followed him as he’s moved and set up his own business now, so let the reviews and new customers begin!
Price: 4.5÷5, good value… his haircuts trump my $ 100+ cuts from the other tier-​1 shops nearby.
Performance: 5/​5, well… my friends compliment me on ‘em, so I guess it can’t be that bad…
Ambience: 4.5÷5, clean and modern li’l studio.
