This fine print gallery is incredible, a little known gem in Sonoma County that has been in the same location for 40 years. A gallery of top notch esteem, the term«fine print» is not fudged here– there are NO giclees or cheap reproductions at The Annex Galleries. Their focus is American fine print artists of the early 20th century– WPA and Depression era, as well as Abstract Expressionism and Modernism– but their selection is HUGE, and spills over into European, Asian, and Hispanic works of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. It is a veritable treasure trove of works. Daniel Lienau is a walking encyclopedia of information on nearly every work in the place and is happy to talk with you about any piece, and with over 5,000 works, that’s a pretty good amount of info. I learned more in that gallery than in a semester of art history at college. There are lithographs, woodcuts(their collection of Gustave Baumann woodcuts is breathtaking), etchings, engravings, linocuts, and more. Even if you are not on the hunt for something to buy, this place is worthy of a good look-see, any time you want to take in some beauty. Collectors and artists alike will have a ball. As an artist, myself, I highly recommend swinging by. TIP: If you are interested in consigning or getting an appraisal, I highly recommend calling ahead. Dropping in can sometimes be tricky if you need something done right away. They’re pretty busy, what with being such a great place and all… TEACHERS: Apparently, the charter school near by has had small groups of kindergarten — 6th graders go in to view the art and discuss it. So while this place isn’t technically«designed for kids», there is always a way to engage them. Call ahead to plan a trip!
