I was born in New Mexico(my roots run deep) though I now live in Oregon. I’ve had green chile burgers all over New Mexico, including those from The Owl Café and the Buckhorn in San Antonio, Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe, which supposedly have the best anywhere. I’ve had them all over the state so I was shocked to find that the best green chile burgers were right under my nose and for a fraction of the price of other places at basically a little shack on Cerrillos in Santa Fe in front of Jackalope. The only thing better would be a cheeseburger from In-N-Out with New Mexico green chile smuggled in in a Baggie like my mother used to do. La Fuente makes outstanding green chile burgers. They are soooo good, I’ve found it impossible to try something else on their menu every year when I make my annual pilgrimage to Santa Fe every fall. Maybe next time. Maybe not. Hard to compete with perfection.

I love this place, while staying at the Silver Saddle I was hungry and stop by and ordered the chicharron burrito with green chile. I love the rice it really was homemade with garlic flavor. I can not wait to go back again when I visit Santa Fe. Stop by and give it a try!

We LOVE the El Fuente burger and have never ordered anything else. We stop here when we do our big shopping trips to Santa Fe(we live on the high road). Yes, you always have to wait 10 to 15 minutes while they broil your burger to perfection and fry those fat, tender fries. We trot into Jackalope for a quick peruse while our burger cooks, it is a perfect fast food AND shop stop. The burgers are HUGE. Slightly pink, the Kaiser rolls have always been fresh, the green chili too. Big onion slice and a pink tomato. The fries are fat and potatoey, not thin and greasy. When we get a lunch here I usually don’t need dinner. I think a burger and coke are about $ 8.

After years of passing by the trailer that is La Fuente Burgers that sits outside Jackalope on Cerrillos, I finally stopped in for the burger. I should have kept the yearning alive. After placing our order with a very friendly and helpful gal at the window, for the La Fuente name sake burger we waited 12 minutes(there was one other order in front of us) we collected our burgers and sat beneath a cottonwood tree. Away from the dead animal smell emanating from beneath the trailer. The nice weather and the shade of the cottonwood were the best part of the experience. The fries were way under cooked and tasteless. The name sack burger pretty tasteless, the meat, cheese and chile being overpowered by the taste of the kaiser roll. It looks cute and inviting… but keep going by.
