Came here for a graduation celebration. I was very disappointed. Hibachi is known for the fun, entertaining cooking display, but our cook kept messing up. He dropped the egg, wasn’t very energetic, just didn’t really seem like he wanted to do it. The food was alright, it wasn’t seasoned enough for my liking. My group and I also ordered sushi which didn’t make me happy either. All the food was«meh». Good for groups, our table sat about 20. Conclusion — I would not come back here. There’s many more hibachi restaurants that’ll put on a better show and have better food.

I always have a good time when I come to this place! My friend and I recently came in at around 9:45 at night and they were very accommodating to us and even sat us at our own table since we were the last ones in. Our cook was awesome and made the experience a blast! I always love the sake getting sprayed into my mouth from across the table lol I’ll definitely be coming with my friends more often since they seem to enjoy it just as much as I do! Oh and the food is amazing as well! The Hibachi area is too fun

Been here many times now and as usual I was not disappointed. Sushi is very good, one of the best in SC. Don’t let the beat up building and shabby interior fool you the food is all very good and very affordable! Think poor mans Benihana only better! Great spot for large parties as well!

Really cozy place. Delicious food and warm service. There also is ample parking at the back. Nice place to come to.

Terrible service ! Was sat and didn’t get our drinks until 30 minutes later, another 30 minutes to take our order, and 20 minutes to get our appetizer. Informed the manager and she claimed that everyone else came before us. Everyone else was fed, when we were the first there. Sushi chef was yelling across the room. Completely unacceptable. Waiters were so rude, every time we addressed a problem they walked away mid conversation.

This was our second visit to Sake and we love it! We had the same guy each time and he puts on a great show for you. Very interactive with the diners at his table. The food is good too! And fairly priced for what you get and the show. I will definitely be coming here again!

I ate at the teppanyaki grill and they have this squirt bottle of sake that they try to aim into your mouth! Very fun. I did not try it since I am a shy human but I enjoyed watching other people try to catch the sake! I had the hibachi scallops and my rice meal was very delicious. I was able to finish all my food but was very full after. I mean I dunno but I don’t expect excellent Asian food from Santa Cruz and I had a pretty good experience. High price and questionable cleanliness but definitely a good time.

Sake is the absolute best place in Santa Cruz to get sushi. They give you so much delicious fresh fish for such a great price. I definitely recommend everyone always come here.

Floors are greasy and slippery as you walk in, so that sets the tone Had a party of seven with reservation Got there early about 30 min thinkin we’d have drinks at the bar while waiting Sat at the bar and the bartender looked at us walked away and never came back actually, for the 15 min or so we waited. Hostess in a big puffy outdoor coat was running(skating on grease actually) back and forth. Very chaotic. We ended up walking out, after no drinks and being kinda grossed out. Went down the street to the water st grill and had an awesome meal

If you want to play it safe, go to I LOVESUSHI. The food, price and the service is decent and they even give a couple side dishes on the house every now and zen. If you’re willing to pay a little more, go to SHOGUN. Shogun does their food a little bit better. Plus the atmosphere is nicer. Aka, better date spot ;) If you have a car or don’t mind walking a bit, go to SAKE. You won’t regret it. It’s SC’s little hidden gem. Pass on MOBO, Tortoro, and Mays. Anything that isn’t on this list either doesn’t deserve recognition, or opened after I graduated lol.

This place is awesome!!! Huge menu and tons of fun! I myself got the philly roll and veggie hibachi and boy was I FULL! I even had to take home quite a bit! My fiancé got the steak hibachi and really enjoyed it. Wonderful staff, and very clean. We’ll be coming back for sure!

This place is the worst. I ordered Tobiko which is flying fish roe. They served me Masago which is smelt roe and insisted that it was Tobiko. This is a common practice amongst low end, shady sushi joints to save a buck by serving the less expensive Masago and passing it off as the higher priced Tobiko. Total B. S!!! Shame on you, Sake House of Bullshit!

Great menu with all the usual items. Large empty restaurant but maybe Monday is the night for excellent service. Sushi and sashimi was very fresh. The staff is very friendly and family. I have this Chinese run Sushi bar bookmarked.

Love, love this place! Our cook was Steven and he totally made the experience. We’ve been here another time and it was great as well, but Steven is funny, talented and a great cook! The food is fantastic. My husband and I got the Sake combo, which is a ton of food. Everything is well prepared, flavorful and served in a super fun manner. We came here as our last dinner out before the baby and I’m so glad.

This review is for the Hibachi. I went here with my boyfriend when they first opened and they used to give more food than they do now. A+ for the cook and the performance during dinner. The cooks have such a positive attitude and I love it! However, I’m giving this place 3 stars because the food(specifically the rice and noodles) tastes a little too salty and drenched in too much soy sauce. Also, after several times eating here I feel like the food makes people sick. I’ve tried the steak, filet mignon, salmon, and chicken before. DONOTGETTHECHICKEN! It tasted extremely rubbery and gross. Also, I came here on a really busy night one time and I witnessed the waiter complain to his boss saying«I’m loosing my mind» after handling 3 tables… they are definitely under employed.

Went there for the first time a couple weeks ago since it’s down the street from our house. The sushi was not very good, and that’s mostly what we ordered(4 rolls). Place is very dark and feels very empty at least at the front near the sushi bar, and doesn’t have a warm ambience. There was one of those public notices for change of ownership posted on the door, so perhaps the 4-star average was from the previous owner. With all the other choices to eat in the area, I doubt we’ll ever come back.

Don’t be turned off by this place’s rundown exterior; my friends and I are always impressed when we walk inside and see the beautiful, modern decorations indoors. There are two large rooms with ample seating making it a great place for groups and parties. I have yet to try the sushi, but the hibachi grill is fun. The chefs are good performers and will crack jokes or toss food and sake(if you’re over 21) into your mouth while cooking. Make sure to arrive by 3 if you want the lunch price! My friends and I walked in at 3:05 thanks to traffic on the 17 and were only offered the dinner even though the place was empty. We wound up splitting three entrees between the 5 of us; the chef divided the portions well and we were all satisfied for about the same price as lunch. The food isn’t extraordinary but is quite good and the performance and ambience elevate the experience considerably. When informed it was my friend’s birthday, the restaurant brought him a complimentary birthday dessert.

Really fun place for birthdays or any celebration. The outside looks a bit rundown and something about the interior seems empty(probably because the rooms are really big) but all that aside, it’s a cool place. Especially for Santa Cruz since there’s not many Asian restaurants to be found. My favorite part about this place is how they shoot sake in your mouth.(Not surprising). Love the chef/customer interaction because it makes the wait for food to be served entertaining! While they cook on the grill in front of you, they’ll toss bits of food into your mouth and also do cool cooking tricks like the volcanic onion. It wasn’t the tastiest food I’ve had and it’s pretty pricey for dinner so that’s why I’m only giving 4 stars. Awesome concept for serving food though.
