I have had Dr. Calmere as my eye doctor for 4 years. I originally went to Dr. Zimmerman in that same office pretty much forever until he retired. After that I tried another office with bad results so I thought I would try Silicon Valley Eyecare again. I recall Dr. Calmere filling in for Dr. Zimmerman one time and he seemed pretty decent. After having him for the last 4 years I plan on sticking with him for a while. During my annual checkups I always have questions about the results and I am happy with the time he takes to explain things(I am VERY nearsighted and am extra careful about my eyesight). He is obviously well-educated and he applies his knowledge in ways that make a lot of sense. He seems to be current with his specialty but is careful about what he recommends. And I never feel rushed in my appointments. Unlike another Unilocaler I have never found Dr. Calmere«selling» me. Yes, I agreed to use the Optimap, but that makes another procedure unnecessary for me(getting my eyes dilated, which was needed in the past if you are very myopic). The office staff seem pretty nice and professional. The only negative I can see is that they seem to have a bit of turnover in that office.

I was going to Dr Calmere as a legacy client of the *great* now-retired Dr Zimmermann. Dr. Calmere was a better option than the Target and JC Penney optometrists that took Eye Med. I had to use my regular PPO insurance to see him(a loophole he identified for me since he’s an opthamalogist), which cost more since I was on a consumer driven healthcare plan and paid significantly out of pocket. But, he has a tiring«sell» mode on adders to the exam(Optimap, frames, lenses, contacts), citing«convenience,» «new technology» and«brands» … Which may appeal to some, but not to me. Still he persists, in his not-so-subtle pressure to get you to buy from him. I have several pairs of glasses, and I read Consumer Reports. So, Costco was an option … and I’ll tell you I never had a visit with him when he didn’t disparage Costco. My last visit was earlier this week(Jun’14), when he(again) took jab at my Costco glasses, and then refused to write a prescription for the same contact lenses that he’s been prescribing for years(Preference Toric from Cooper Vision). I’d purchased those contacts over the past few years through the internet evidently depriving him of some god-given right to my money? He first said they don’t make them anymore(a quick web search tells me I can still get them). So, I had to go into my own pocket for a follow-up exam at an optometrist that would give me the prescription for reusable daily wear lenses I want. I check Costco in Mountain view, and they are *much* better rated. I just went today and saw Manny Nguyen at that store: Fantastic listener, no-pressure, and a prescription for contacts! Ironically, I’d planned to buy from Calmere’s shop this past visit since my company changed back to VSP insurance, so I had a little extra $$. Now Calmere’s lost my transactional business, lost me as a customer, and lost all the recommendations I’ve made to friends.(I’ll be sure to follow up with them to tell this story.) Save your money and avoid this clown show: Go to Costco get a great exam from Dr Manny Nguyen! If you want to purchase designer glasses or contacts that he doesn’t stock, he’ll give you a prescription, a handshake and a smile :-)

I was going there till last year, for 6 years. but, over the last few years, they seem to be going down in terms of service. Dr. Calmere used to take time examining and explaining, but, now it seems just like he has no time or interest. Also, after their computers were stolen, and all our files and info was up for grabs, their response was so off-putting.

A Partner with Silicon Valley Eyecare Dr Calmere has been my eye doctor for over 10 years since I arrived in this area. He is an excellent doctor, he has a friendly manner and explains anything that is going on and is patient and will make sure any issued are resolved. Highly professional, and always a pleasure to meet on my annual visit. Glasses are quite expensive, but I continue to get my glasses from them, although of course I get my prescription which I could use anywhere.
