There is no sincerity in your apology. Why lie? It was you, Kevin, the owner at the front desk when we arrived, not any other host. You didn’t start the wait list till the party of 4 came after us, there were only two parties waiting so it was not an accident you messed up who came first. No good cooking can come out of dishonest people. We spent Christmas in Santa Barbara every Christmas for the last 10 years or so, this incident shall not deter our love for the city and many other great restaurants.

Such great service! Let us in with just 10 minutes till close and they were still so friendly and accommodating. Not to mention, the food was excellent! And they even refilled our rice bowls! The Mongolian beef and sweet and pungent chicken are delicious! We will definitely be coming back!

Very kind & hospitable staff! Food was delicious as well *yelp wants longer reviews… Ain’t nobody got time for that :) So here are a couple of sentences to please the people of Unilocal who think that people need to keep reading reviews instead of getting on with their lives

They handled Christmas like champs. Food was fast. Staff was awesome. Owner’s were on it. Even after getting yelled at by the mom of a Chinese family who shouted in front of her mom«you discriminate on your own race!» The owner replied«good night, you shouldn’t talk that way in front of your mother.» The Chinese families expected to be sat first but the owner wouldn’t have it. He treated all the same and it was United Nations in there tonight. Fantastic experience. Never been before but will be our #1 choice now!

We came here while visiting Santa Barbara, due to the vegan/vegetarian options. It was easy for everyone in our group to find something to order and we were very satisfied with our meals. It’s a solid Chinese restaurant.

A-okay, nothing impressive. The rice was dry, didn’t stick together, and had poor flavor. The sizzling rice soup wasn’t bad, but was lacking compared to others I’ve had. The large bowl wasn’t that large and had few vegetables in it. Again the rice wasn’t the tastiest. The flavors of the kung pao were flat out not good. I go here for lunch sometimes to mix things up but there are better Chinese eateries.

One of my favorite places to eat in Santa Barbara. While I worked downtown, I always used to visit Shang Hai on my lunch breaks, their service was always efficient, and I was out of there on time, not to mention how delicious the food is! Their lunch specials are great, and so affordable! Sometimes I wish I still worked downtown so I could pop in more often!

Dude, I think I just found my favorite new Chinese food in Santa Barbara– I’ve lived here for 36 years and I cannot believe I never knew it was here! Amazing service, perfect sizzling rice soup(much how I judge an authentically great Mexican restaurant by their expertly done Spanish rice and tamales, I judge Chinese restaurants by their Sizzling rice soup and noodles) and every other dish you could ever want… The fact that I put my meal down to write this should say as much. Great prices too btw! Enjoy, you’re welcome :)

Nice portions, prepared excellently. They threw in an extra egg roll to make up for the soup and tea when I picked up a lunch special instead of dining in. I couldn’t even finish it, which says a lot about their portions.(generous)

I really don’t know how this has 4 stars. It is palatable. You won’t gag. But the«fried rice» is just… rice with soy sauce. I honestly don’t want to bag on this place because it was decent. It was VERY clean and nicely appointed. They accommodated some special requests(not breading the chicken for example). However, having eaten at many Chinese restaurants I wouldn’t put this in 4 star territory. Just 3.

Shang Hai is the best!!! I have frequenting Shang Hai for 30 years and love it more than ever. I always order the veggie egg rolls, war won ton soup with the spicy chili paste on the side. The soy bean cashew nut chicken, egg foo young, and the moo shu pork. I love the family atmosphere and the customer service. The food is also piping hot which I love. It’s a must try secret in SB.

ALERT: hair, hair, and hair. If you ignore the warning, at least, you want to avoid the following items, tofu soup, steam rice(I would avoid all kinds of rice), and fish. No kidding! That is my finding just one time visit. The moment that I saw the almost bold chef, I almost puked.

I recommend the sizzling rice soup! A favorite of my wife’s when she goes to Sam Woo, and now mine too. This basically tasted very similar to Sam Woo’s, which is a good thing. Since I love sour, I went for the lemon chicken and wasn’t disappointed. Was pleasantly surprised to find pineapple in the mix. Just thought the chicken pieces had a little too much batter. But same goes for the more traditional and ubiquitous orange chicken you’ll find almost anywhere. I applaud their take on a less common dish, and I applaud my risk-taking hehe.

Shang Hai is amazing! Delicious food, comfortable environment and wonderful staff. Their server Allison always makes our experience memorable. Our favorites here are the salt and pepper chicken and their sesame seed shrimp. I highly recommend it!

BESTINTOWN — superior Chinese food! Food is made without much wait(I always take it to go). The dining room is dark and cramped… but it doesn’t matter because this is THEONLYWORTHYCHINESEFOODINTOWN! The eggplant is my favorite but Ive had half the menu and loved everything I tried. They’re really the best!!! The staff is friendly.

I’ve been coming to Shang Hai for a few years now, and I’ve never been disappointed. They have so many vegan options to choose from. So, it never gets boring. I typically go during lunch so I can get the lunch special. Around $ 7.50 for soup, egg rolls, and an entrée with rice. It’s such a great deal. The staff is always very attentive and kind. If you haven’t been, you should definitely check it out.

Bottom Line: Decent food but horrible value. $ 50 for two, no drinks? …and this is in a mini-mall on Milpas street… not even the good end of Milpas street My wife, son and I went in here for dinner the other night. I love orange chicken so I was going to do the normal order but for $ 19 you can get the entire«dinner» order so I went for it and in just about every single other Chinese place I have ever eaten, so much food comes out, you’re eating it as left overs for three days. The food came out and I have to say that I was underwhelmed. The flavor of the Orange chicken was great — sweet, spicy and perfectly cut by the steamed rice but it was barely and serving and a half — for $ 20. My wife ordered the crispy noodle plate which is her favorite but it was the same thing in that it cost $ 20 and it was enough for her. All in all our bill with tip was more than $ 50 and we both drank water. If we had bought drinks it easily could have been $ 80+ which is crazy for what you get. The service wasn’t bad but it certainly wasn’t good and this place is tiny so you’re constantly in the way or bumping into people which if you add it all up just means we won’t be hanging out here that often which is a bummer because we liked the food.

Shang Hai is tucked into a small shopping center with a laundromat among other things. Honestly without Unilocal I would have no business trying this place but it’s a good one. Service is top notch which isn’t always the case with Chinese restaurants. They advertise Unilocal on the window so clearly they know we are influential and they have decided to embrace Unilocal. It shows, I like the staff here because they are attentive and polite. The food is pretty darn good. I was a little impressed how quickly my food came out and the quality in which it was prepared. The noodles were not too soggy which I don’t think I’ve really ever had with flat noodles. Excellent. If you like Chinese food this is a good place to try.(Americanized stuff anyway)

Five stars for service! Super friendly staff and owner who checked on us regularly to see how our food tasted and if we needed anything. I got the beef noodle and it was exactly what I was craving, tasty and with(more than) enough beef!(Usually restaurants tend to skimp on the meat). There were also vegetables but not so much that they overwhelmed the dish. You can turn any a la carte entrée into the dinner plan for an additional $ 3, which gets you a bowl of the soup of the day, an egg roll, brown/steamed/fried rice, and a fried piece of dough(???). Bf and I did this and we loved the soup and egg roll. Both of us ordered fried rice but we might have gotten brown rice on accident, no biggie in context of everything else. At the end we got fortune cookies and almond cookies, and the owner even boxed my leftovers for me… nice change of pace from your regular you’re-on-your-own Chinese place. My only gripe is the high prices, but I’m used to super cheap Chinese food in LA/SGV. Will definitely be back!
