It’s a novel concept. Stand there and have yourself scanned so they can print out a figure of you. We were just basically walking past the store and noticed someone in their office. Curious, we walked in and spoke to the guy and we decided to give it a try. The difficult part is that you have to hold yourself in position as the plate you are standing on rotates. Also, it’s a small plate so if you fit two people on there like I did, there is not a lot of space. When the plate spins for the scan, chances are your legs and feet will be fine, but the head is difficult to hold position. Now the upside is, they now have an instant scanner at Westfield in San Jose so I will have to look into that. As for the printout, they have samples around the store for you to look at. Do they look like smooth surface injection molded figures like you see in the toy store? Absolutely not. I do think that in time, the technology will improve so they can have printers that will do better. Still, it’s pretty cool to have a figure of yourself. It’s a fun and novel idea. Is it expensive? Well, it is a little high, but you can get the smaller size figure for less money. But no, it’s not going to be $ 9.99 like stuff you can buy at Toys R Us. In a nutshell, I view this is a 3D photograph. A «picture» that is of you but in 3D. I did make an order and I expect to have my figure in a few days. I’m curious to see how we look as a 3D figure. But yes. it’s novel and something different for your office desk.

In theory, is cool! In reality the technology is not quite there and their figures look quite bad… I had many of them on my hand and they look pretty horrible and creepy. However if you are ok with that. maybe is worth it. At the end after reading their FAQ I decided to pass on them. Maybe they’ll get better with time but now I would not suggest you order one, unless you don’t care.

Twindom is a pop up business with a very quirky concept. They offer free 3D scans to anyone willing to walk in and stand still on a rotating platform for 3 full minutes. It’s definitely worth checking out, if not only for the bizarre experience of feeling like a college art class model, then for the chance to have yourself immortalized as a digital 3D model. Here’s how it works: You walk in, get scanned, gain access to your digital scan on the Twindom site, and you have the option to purchase a 3D printed model of yourself at a range of costs and sizes. While we didn’t opt to purchase in the moment, it would be cute to have a miniature version of my partner lurking on the bedside table, and ordering can be done online as well. Check it out!
