This place has excellent Indian food, always consistent. The quality of the food is amazing… Highly recommend

Just walked by this place and they have brown paper paper covering the front windows so they either are going through remodel or they are now closed

Tea was very bad, food was ok — not a good option for Indian food fans. Good ambiance

I really wanted to like this place, but it was just an okay experience. The service was very good. The food was hit or miss. Some of the curries were decent. The naan was problematic, however. The Kabuli naan had no flavor, no sweetness as it should have. It was also the consistency of the bread that was«off.» If I had to guess why it tasted like that, it seemed like it could have been frozen and reheated. The naan was so disappointing that it made the whole meal seem mediocre. It ended up being about $ 25 per person before tip, so a little pricey for a mediocre meal.

Horrible! Thats the only adjective I can come up with when I think of this place. My husband and I wanted to have a nice romantic dinner on V’Day and unfortunately I chose Roti at San Mateo. The guy serving us did not know what was on the menu, there were mosquitos all over and when we complained about this to the manager, he just disregarded it. The food was below par, the service was mediocre and the quantity was just enough for a 3-yr-old. In short, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone…

We had a reservation as it is Valentine’s Day. We were immediately seated and served. Customers received a free glass of champagne to celebrate Valentine’s. The papadum was OK, but the two sauces were either too hot or too sweet. The basmati rice was light and cooked just right. The garlic and basil naan was delicious. The prawns in coconut sauce were too salty, but the sauce was excellent. The mixed tandoori was burnt, oversalted, and dry. The price was rather high, but the location is good. The servers seemed inexperienced. They could not remember which table asked for what item.

I have to second that!!! Why on earth this place has three stars is beyond me! It’s just nuts! I hated Indian food before I ate here. I was literally forced into this place and I am so glad! Their food is absolutely amazing! I ate the garlic and basil naan, chicken tikka kabobs, vegetable pakoras and the papadum chips. Not only is the food great, the service was top notch! I will be coming here again and again! Thanks Sunny!

Was looking for a place to sit at the bar for dinner I was alone. Walked in greeted by Sonny. Great Guy big smile and very friendly. Let me know it’s always happy hour because he is a happy guy. He let me fast a few different types of wine until I found the one I liked. I asked him for a recommendation. He started at prawns. I told him I love lamb so he directed me to the lamb shank with a half side of saag paneer(spiced up for me)

Tasteless & mini size portions. Taste is not upto Indian standards. We tried Paneer Jalfrezi, veg Biryani and Navratan Korea and all of then suck. Service is very slow too.

Don’t go! The tandoori stuff was ok but their most basic Dal and Roti was so terrible. Service was mediocre! They even charge you for pickle, basic to every Indian restaurant. I will not recommend this place.

I walked into Roti with an appetite and left with a stomach full of regret. The experience and food were subpar. Food: I ordered Murgh Makhani(butter chicken), Mattar Paneer, and naan. The murgh makhani tasted like tomato bisque with chicken in it(read: ‘disappointment’). The mattar paneer seems like it was lazily made of the same base with some peas and(undercooked) paneer thrown in. One piece of naan was lightly burnt while another was undercooked. I also ordered a salt lassi, which I could not finish because it was overly salty and seemed to lack other spices traditionally added to this drink. Prices: The entrees were expensive compared to the very small portion sizes and generally poor to decent quality food. Price wouldn’t be an issue if the food wasn’t so depressing. Atmosphere: Fresh. I chose to eat here because it looked lively! Décor is warm and welcoming. Bonus: the bathrooms are squeaky clean and smell great. Service: The waiters were polite and we got our food in a reasonable amount of time. Nothing spectacular, nothing to complain about either. I should also note I ate here during prime dinner hours on a Saturday night, which one would expect to have the best food and service Roti has to offer. Its current three star rating seems too high for my experience. There are many better choices in San Mateo and the surrounding area for both a cheaper option as well as an experience that matches this(high) price. I would not recommend this restaurant when compared to these.

For some reason this place tends to be empty, even though it’s right in the middle of downtown San Mateo The prices in this place is pretty high. Yes the food is good, especially the butter chicken, and the service is quite good, but it’s definitely not cheap. The décor inside is also ok, but probably less impressive compared to other similar-priced places in the area. Overall, the food is pretty good. Worth checking it out once.

Had weekend dinner here. Place: Very nice, simple. Loved candles on each table, We had almost entire place to our self. Server: Our server was very gentleman. Provided excellent service throughout. Menu: Had usual vegetarian options. Navratna Korma was good & Paneer Jalfrazi was not. Both curries had big pieces of paneer, making it tasteless. Naan here are the biggest. Me & my wife couldn’t even finish one naan. Price: For the quality of food offered, It was expensive.

I don’t understand why this place has three stars! The restaurant is well appointed, the menus nicely made, and the waiters fairly professional. The food is decent for its price point, and if you’re not keen on Indian food, it’s understandable if the aab-e-gosht doesn’t keep you 100% satisfied. Overall, a decent restaurant that hits all the right marks. :D

The service here is horrible and the food portions are small and old and the staff is just simply rude. I would never recommend this place to anyone. The food is stale and not tasty and this is obvious as the restaurant was empty when we came and stayed and the ambiance is poor. The gulab jamun was burnt, the tea was Walmart tea bags and the hot water was cold. The only thing that was good was the wine and that to we were told the wine we wanted was not there and they sold us the most expensive wine, which we realized was just a way to extract more money from us. Horrible in every way, please trust me do not go here. In addition, the manager was outright rude and did not care of customers.

First, you don’t know me, so you don’t know how much of an idiot I can be at times. Definitely made a reservation for here on another app, but made it on the wrong date. Owner was super-understanding of how crucial the points were to my overall well-being. He called them up and had it changed, quelling my neuroticism. That was dope. We then proceeded to order a few apps, which I will get to in a second, but I should give a PROTIP – Always check in on Unilocal before ordering anything. We didn’t until after ordering apps and then received ANOTHER app for checking in. App overload was a very real thing that night – but a very good thing. General Note – there were a lot of choices on this menu, which always gets points from me. The Apps– Samosas – I don’t eat veggies and veggie things. The folks I was with enjoyed them, though. They were devoured. Pakoras – Here, we had apparently two different kinds. I ordered the ones from the menu and they were very good with flavorful sauces accompanying them for dipping. I had never had them before, so I don’t have a ton to compare them to, but they were quite good. The others we had were not on the menu – they were a Unilocal!promotion and they were different and quite good as well. Entrée– Chicken Biryani – Biryani is one of my favorite dishes in any cuisine. I pretty much always like it and this was no different. It was a touch on the milder side, so perhaps you could ask for a modification if you like it hotter. Na’an – They give you so much. I have a picture of one order and we were silly enough to order two for three people. Probably not necessary, but tasty nonetheless. Minor knocks – they got my wife’s order wrong(she ordered Seafood Biryani; they brought Seafood Curry), so perhaps reiteration is in order once your order is in. Always a drag to have to decide whether to send it back or just eat it b/c the others in your party already have their food. Overall, solid experience. Don’t know how many Indian options there are in Downtown San Mateo, but this one is solid. I would like to return on a warm evening and get a chance to sit outside.

The Tikka Chicken was really tough and dry… With very little flavor. As was the rice. The naan was good. Service wasn’t great. The place was empty and my water stayed that way too. Food and bill came promptly. But there was no interaction between myself & any of the people who waited on me. I felt like they were annoyed that I arrived at the end of the lunch rush. They set things down and ran off. I was excited about this place as the atmosphere looked nice and I was dying for good Indian food. Unfortunately, I have no reason to return.

Early in June, my wife received an Email Invitation to Roti regarding a Wine Tasting Event with Live Music. Upon our arrival, Roti was full of their regular customers and we were greeted by Sonny. Sonny led us over to a Blond Lady that had just two bottles; one Red and one White… not much of a wine tasting selection. Jenny loves Reds as well as I. The Blond Lady poured us about a Tiny SIP… and that was IT… it was absurd. And that was the Wine Tasting? Well, at least the Music was good. We then sat down in their cocktail section. I ordered the famous Roti Tandoori Chicken Wings… Omg, they were delicious!!! We also ordered two cocktails and one more appetizer. After we paid the bill, we got up to leave. Only then did Sonny approach us and stated«Your not going to stay for dinner?» Jenny politely told him we were kind of full of the appetizers and thanked him. Its not that we absolutely had no room for dinner, but Jenny and I felt a cloud of disappoint over the Wine Tasting Event which really fell short of our expectations. The Food deserves 5 Stars but the Wine Selection and the Wine Tasting Event was lack luster. Maybe next time Roti/Sonny can have an Indian Beer Selection… although there are JUST three Indian Beers on the menu… well, at least it a better selection than that wine tasting of one RED Selection… Hey Sonny… this is California… you know; Reknown Bay Area-Napa Wines. Jenny will be glad to point out many of the better wine that should grace your menu. I’ve read a lot of posts complaining about the prices Roti Charges. In case you haven’t noticed during the past 5 years, EVERYTHING in the Bay Area has jumped up in pricing except for Über. and Costco Hot Dog/Drink Meals. The Two Star Rating is for the publicized Wine Event. Our overall experience at Roti’s makes it a 5 Star Restaurant when it comes to Northern Indian Cuisine.

It was okay. Frankly, I was letdown because I often eat at Curry Up Now(which I consider to be the Chipotle of Indian food) and frankly, I prefer Curry Up Now. It’s not that it was bad. It’s that it wasn’t as good and I spent significantly more money because Curry Up Now has a $ 12 option that I order, that rocks. I’m okay with spending more money but I need to like the food more and sadly, I didn’t. So far in San Mateo my favorite Indian spots are Curry Up Now and All Spice. I know there’s a huge gap in what they offer, but they both satisfy me in their own ways everytime.

Located in downtown San Mateo this beautiful restaurant is worth giving a try. I ordered the prawns biryani and its very delicious. It took a while to get the food prepared but tasted very authentic. I felt very refreshing while eating such a nice food. NOTE: 10 – 15 minutes of time to prepare the food. Quantity of food is less. Expensive food but WORTH.

My friend got a coupon here as part of a massage package(don’t ask me). The food was terrible but this went beyond just bad food. The restrooms weren’t working, the chai was cold and the service … Just off. And to make things worse, they billed her a service fee for using the coupon! When she challenged it, the manager finally said the fee was the tip… However if you did the math, that was a 25% tip for a terrible experience. So shady.

The food at this place was pretty good. We had the chicken tikka, dal makhani, oanner bhujia and chole masala. The paneer bhujia was very good and the bread basket was more than enough for 2 people. The gajar halwa was a nice dessert to end the meal with. Overall a good experience. This was second time and the husband has come here for lunch as well, and so far neither of us has been disappointed. Also the staff was very attentive. Checked in with us a few times to make sure everything was OK.
