Encantadora librería, donde además de libros puedes encontrar muchos objetos curiosos. Los dueños son personas agradables, con los que pude conversar un rato. Al final me hice con un libro para mi hijo firmado por el autor.

I really like this store because it’s a little joint started by a very friendly Japanese lady who wanted to bring awareness to the community about Asian-American experiences. As mentioned in the other reviews, it’s manned by volunteers– Florence Hongo, the general manager, said the volunteers are mostly relatives. I didn’t have much time to browse, but in the 20 or so minutes that I spent there, I was able to look at some titles in the children’s book section. I was impressed with the quality and breadth of books. There are tons of picture books with Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Cambodian, Samoan, etc. themes. I purchased a picture book called Abadeha: The Philippine Cinderella. This bookstore also carries a lot of Allen Say books, so I’m a fan just based on that. If anything, I kinda wish that the store was a tad more organized and easier to navigate because of lack of signage in each particular section. Other than that, I hope this store and Florence’s mission to spread Asian-American literacy to our community and beyond continue to grow strong! There are so many amazing stories and rich cultures to share with our youth and, actually, everyone!

I LOVETHISPLACE! One day I was walking form my favorite modern Filipino restaurant Bistro Luneta in downtown San Mateo back to my office when I noticed right next to the Jack in the Box and across the street from the adult bookstore(yes, it’s true) was AACP book store! Such a gem nestled between food grossness and porn grosssness! I am a young woman of Filipino-American heritage and not once in my life have I seen in one location so many books(non-fiction & fiction), magazines, & educational materials about Asian heritage, identity, and history. It was absolutely exciting to see so many categories of topics in this tiny store. Highlights: 1) Children’s Section: There are so many colorful and beautifully illustrated books(some even signed by the original authors) about Asian culture, gender identity, and simply growing up. Such unique books to share with your children! My favorite is a book called A to Z: From Amelia to Zamora –26 influential women in history. This store is special because it recognizes the need to share the history of all minorities. 2) The staff: So nice, so polite, and so helpful! 3) FREEGIFTWRAP! Need a gift in a pinch, but forgot the wrapping paper? No need! The friendly staff do it on site! So… If you are interested in finding research books about a specific Asian heritage or topic this bookstore is for you! If you are interested in purchasing original Children’s Books for your niece or nephew’s birthday, this bookstore is for you! If you are interested in reading authors from your own Asian heritage, then this bookstore is for you! Best part: This bookstore is locally owned AND profits go back into this store & the San Mateo Asian Community!

I ran past this bookstore on a run of mine and had wanted to check it out. It’s pretty tucked away. There’s a little tree that blocks the banner with the store name. I forgot that it was on 3rd Ave next to Jack n the box so it took me a few more minutes to find it. The bookstore is pretty small but it has a pretty decent selection of Asian American books. I scanned some of their titles and saw a few books I recognized and had read before. I actually went into the store looking for a biography of a Chinese political leader because I failed to recognize it was a bookstore for Asian American books. So I didn’t get the book I was looking for however it’s really nice to see this niche bookstore here in San Mateo.

Wow, what a cool little place. We stumbled upon it walking around San Mateo on a beautiful, warm sunny day. It’s packed with all kinds of books on a variety of topics– literature, non-fiction, adult, children, sub-adult, cookbooks, academia, etc., and seems to have a number of AA books that would be hard to find anywhere else. All in all a very quaint, grassroots effort. I’ve also been to East Wind in Berkeley, another cool joint. I believe this place is smaller, but it also happens to be a very worthy non-profit that is manned by volunteers. If you want to support your local bookstores and are looking for books on Asian American topics, this place is definitely worth a visit.
