On site for the first time! Looks clean, pretty busy a few minutes after high noon. Nice mix of people – seniors from nearby residency, students, construction dudes, office workers… it was lively. They have a funky little drive-through which backs up pretty fast and must sometimes block the entrance to the property. Parking lot is convoluted and not everyone looks where they’re going, so drive carefully! I parked and went in to order to-go. The soda line is immediately next to the register, so dive right in and take your place with confidence despite all the people loitering nearby with empty glasses. Ordering my 3pc mix and side of potatoes was fast and efficient. I added an apple pie when the cashier suggested it, and my order came much sooner than I expected. I really can’t imagine the drive-through would have been faster. Not all the employees calling order numbers can compete with the dining room volume, so pay attention. Neither napkins nor utensils in my to-go bag, but there might have been a self-serve section near the soda station. My order was fine. Not perfection, but good and at a competitive price. I enjoy the apple pie crust(a rectangular pocket pie) is NOT sugary like a cookie, but plain and allows the filling to be the star. $ 8.73 after tax for leg, wing, thigh, two biscuits, single mashed potato w/white gravy and an apple pie. I was full enough I had one piece and a biscuit left to offer the pets or snack on tomorrow. P. S. Microwaved that thigh two days later and put apple butter on the biscuit. Nearly had to beat people off with a stick in the break room!

Good place for lunch. Had the steak fingers and they were made fresh for the order. Lightly breaded and the country gravy was good. This is mostly a chicken place but I am not disappointed.

Second time to eat here, crew recognized us which is cool. I got snack pac with wing and a side salad. Chicken was hot and juicy and a great salad full of veggies, cheese, croutons. One coworker got half a rotisserie chicken and a split of liver and gizzards. he ate every morsel and my other coworker got the 4 piece steak finger with mashed potatoes and apple pie. Her only complaint was no extra gravy for the fingers. We will be back again and certainly recommend.

It’s good but not great. The chicken wasn’t crispy. The fries were soft and lukewarm. Having read previous reviews I was excited to have some good chicken, and this was all but mediocre.

Two ladies that I met at Jury Duty in San Marcos took me here on our lunch break. I was super excited because you really can’t go wrong with friend chicken. In my mind, I was expecting something equivalent to Austin’s Golden Chick. It definitely does not compare to Golden Chick’s sweet, warm rolls and juicy, flavorful, crispy fried chicken. Gills Fried Chicken is good fried chicken, and they have pretty good buscuits and cole slaw, but it is not mind-blowingly amazing. They do have a great selection on the sizes of plates they offer, and a good side selection. It get really busy right after we arrived, so I am guessing this is a pretty popular place.

Friendly staff but the chicken is not crispy and is very bland tasting. Would not recommend if you like crisp fried chicken. It was moist — but lacks flavor. I have eaten a lot of mediocre fried chicken and Gills is definitely mediocre.

I really enjoy the new location. The chicken here while a bit on the pricey side is still very delcious and fresh. The thing that makes me weak in the knees with Gill’s is the chicken and dumplings. They make them during the winter months and alternate between the 2 San Marcos locations as to where they are, but it is on a set schedule. Another interesting thing is that you can get frozen already fried chicken to heat up in the oven. 18 pieces for under $ 5. Never tried it but never had enough people around to justify 18 pieces of chicken. All the tables have squeeze bottle hot sauce, margarine sauce(yes margarine in squeeze bottle), and honey to adorn those yummy biscuits. Did I mention the chicken and dumplings? Under $ 5 for a generous styrofoam bowl and a biscuit.

Me: «So, I went to a new fried chicken place for lunch today…» Friend: «What did you get?» Me: «Catfish.» A new San Martian lunchtime tradition began for me today at Gill’s. Yep, this is the same Gill’s brand that is over on Hopkins by the Interstate, but with much less traffic, lots more parking, abundant tables, and a really nice interior. And – list time – «clean restrooms»! You’re greeted by friendly people here to take your order. If they’re not busy, they’ll even bring it out to you. The catfish is cooked up when you order it, so it’s hot and fresh. Love the cornmeal breading, and, no, the catfish doesn’t taste like dirt here. Decent fries, along with endless refills on tea and fountain drinks, and this is pretty much a weekly«must do» on my lunch time list now. «We interrupt this Unilocal review to bring you a Gill’s Friend Chicken News Flash: They now serve chicken and dumplings on Sundays.» Quick Tip: If you can, leave early for lunch. The rush hits right about 12:10, and another right about 12:30.
