Been going here ever since I can remember. THESANDWICHESAREAMAZING! The staff is fast and friendly with a wonderful outdoor eating atmosphere. I always have to stop when in the area!

Good sandwiches, but it is patently false advertising to call your business a «grocery» when they sell no groceries. Your a deli, that’s it.

Terrible sandwich. $ 10.75 for a sandwich with loaf multigrain bread that tasted like they bought it from the grocery store two weeks ago, two thin slices of turkey, two thin slices of roast beef, wilted lettuce, mustard and a slice of tomato. I could have bought better ingredients and made five sandwiches for that price. The place was not crowded either and it took 15 minutes to get the food. Overpriced for what was ordered. Staff is not very welcoming either. Too many good sandwich options in town to come back.

Good sandwich, some of the breads were a bit too chewy. Outdoor Seating area is large. Interesting sides like fried pickles. Would still pick high street deli as number one, but gus’s is a close second.

My normal review is usually 5 stars, but my last two visits, they not only messed my sandwich up, I have the ticket, but they are ruder than normal. They have specifically put sprouts on my sandwich both time when I know for a fact I did not ask for them, I double check before and then I check the ticket after! Still a great sandwich tho.

I enjoy Gus’ as both a sit down restaurant and an easy«to go» lunch while I’m at work. The wait times aren’t the best but I’m willing to accept them since the food is generally pretty good. However, I went in the other day and had the absolute worst cashier I’ve experienced in a long time. Her name was Hannah and she was so unpleasant about doing her job that it made me question why she would be working there at all. She was grumpy about me ordering food, slammed a pen down(and I mean SLAMMED) for me to sign my receipt, and as soon as the next guy was finished she tossed the«register closed» sign up as fast as she could. Funny enough, she went to the food preparation area and was immediately all smiles as she talked loudly about some boy she likes and never gets to work with. Maybe if she put half of that energy into being friendly with customers these type of experiences wouldn’t happen. I’ll go back eventually. But I’ll definitely take my business and money elsewhere if she is the one taking the orders.

Love this place! Usually end up here when High Street Deli is over crowded… or I’ll end up at High Street Deli when Gus’s is crowded! Staff is a bunch of high school/college kids but they are always friendly! This is my go to for a sandwhich in SLO! :) The outside seating is really great on a sunny day as well! Great selection of beers, chips and drinks!

Two of the worst breakfast burrito ever. Everything was burnt. Tasted like biting into charcoal. 0 starts.

I live down the street from gus’ and I would definitely put this shop at one of my favorite sandwich shops in SLO. Heck, I’d even say it might be my favorite. I definitely recommend the meatlovers, expecially with garlic mayo. Enjoy!

I’ve never had a bad sandwich here and I’ve been coming here since grade school, I’m almost 40 now. They just get it, the whole thing. Patio seating, beer, salads, fountain drinks or choose from cooler, sweets… it’s just perfect. Parking can be a pain but just depends on when you go. The staff is friendly and they deliver(call a day before or right when they open). The way they layer their sandwiches and the ingredients they use are spot on. San Luis wouldn’t be San Luis without this iconic deli. They’ve been around a long time for a reason.

I LOVE sandwiches, so I was understandably stoked when, on a recent trip to SLO, my boyfriend(who went to grad school there) told me that SLO is the sandwich capital of the world. Gus’ is his absolute favorite, so we went there for our first sandwich fix. I also am VERY picky about my sandwiches. Not in a «oh, I don’t like that» sort of a way, but in the«pickles make it soggy, so put them on the side» and«I love tomatoes like a fat kid loves cake, so give me all the tomatoes you have» kind of way. So, I was stoked when this place has a piece of paper and you just make your own sandwich. I got a bomber, which was a huge mistake. A regular would have been more than enough, but hey, I’m not your dad, you do you. Turkey, avo, muenster, spicy mustard, french roll, EXTRA tomatoes, pickles on the side, red onion. Turkey was tasty, but I could have gone for another layer of meat. Avo was a great portion. Muenster cheese is always delicious. French roll was PHENOMENAL. Reminded me of that tasty bread from Jimmy Johns, to be honest. So delicious. Tomatoes… were sad. I had like five roma tomato slices on the entire humongous sandwich, so it was a bit disappointing. Pickles were put in a separate little wrapping, which was so nice of them to do. Took our sandwiches to Avila beach, even though it was drizzling, and made friends with a seagull(we named him Grant). Grant also approved of the french roll. All in all, I really enjoyed my sandwich, but if I’m being honest, I preferred High Street Deli a little bit more.(My boyfriend and I spoke about this for awhile and we decided that Gus’ has some killer attributes that, depending on what you like, Gus’ may be better. These include: better bread, better cheese selection, and better meat selection. I agree with all of these. Gus’ had muenster; High Street didn’t; Gus’ bread was better; and Gus’ had more«italian» meats and included an oil/vinegar options… so if italian is your sandwich preference, you should probably hit up Gus’ instead of High Street.)

Great sandwiches, outdoor seating, the only negative is parking. If the area is busy get ready to circle the block. So you walk in fill out a sandwich paper and take it to the counter to pay. Yum!

Solid breakfast burrito with fresh and tasty ingredients. I got one with bacon, onions, and jalapenos(one meat, and two veggie/sauce choices with potatoes already in it), and I could definitely tell the bacon wasn’t typical supermarket bacon because of its dark color and rich aroma. The jalapenos weren’t overly pickled and still retained a high amount of spiciness. Their fresh salsa is a great topping for the burrito, and the potatoes were seasoned well and had a great crisp. The patio area is beautiful especially on a sunny day and is a great place to relax. The wait for the food was a tad bit long, but the atmosphere of Gus’s made me not care at all!

Where everyone knows you name? No bar stool in sight, but your name is called out louder than a B-52 taking off. More kinds of potato chips than your mind can play tricks on. Lots of alcohol choices which is nice if you had all day to enjoy a brew or two in the beautiful spring like day of a slow SLO day. Very fresh, chewy Italian bread with a slab of this and that. Perhaps in this college town someone could or should have too much education to comprehend that lite mayo means light spread versus diet mayo. I would have preferred avocado than cheap avocado-like spread. It is all about the details in the manufacturing of a well-crafted sandwich; expensive or not. This one could use a quality tune up. Cute place, deeply rooted in the community, and hoards of beautiful collegiate Californians are the real reasons to come here.

Friday, 12:00PM. Quickie: + Food quality * Service — Hygiene + Turnaround And then??? Gus’ makes one helluva sammie. Mine was huge, with generous portions, and full of flavor. ********** Stuffed my face in: 1. Tri-tip sammy + Savory rub permeates with each bite. Constructive comments: *Option to compost? *Source ingredients? *Make your own bread?

So extremely disappointed and Gus’s grocery right now. They used to be one of the very few options that offered gluten free bread in SLO, and now they’ve apparently decided to do away with it because… it falls apart easily. Yes, it’s gluten free bread. It does that. That’s very much preferable to not having the option at all. Because sometimes I just want a real sandwich, you know — with real bread. I get tired of only having the lettuce wrap option. Gus’s, PLEASE bring back the gluten free bread option(or find a different type that doesn’t fall apart as easily — whatever), and I’ll be incredibly thankful, and I’ll give you a well deserved 5 star review!

Average food for high prices and a long wait. I waited at least 20 minutes for my very simple made-to-order salami sandwich. When I got it I realized they had toasted my French baguette even though I hadn’t marked for it to be toasted. Made for an uncomfortable meal as it was really tough to eat and scratched the roof of my mouth. Not a lot of room in the deli to wait for your order — which is necessary because there will be a wait, so people are just awkwardly crammed together. Not a fan

I LOVETHISPLACE. Seriously, best sandwiches ever. They have a list of sandwiches to chose from, or you can make your own by checking off what you want– which is the way I like to do it. I always get turkey and I love the Multigrain bread, and the Dutch crunch is really good/popular as well. There are extras that they don’t charge for, like pesto, black olives, dill pickles etc. I always ask for a lot of pesto on both sides of the bread. You can also call ahead and place an order for pickup to avoid a long wait. Their homemade potato chips are also amazing. Anyone who comes to SLO should eat here.
