i had El Charro on Friday and it was pretty good. I would say the meat(carnitas) was a little to dry and crispy for me. I also had the carne asad a and that was pretty good. the shrimp dish we had was expensive and too briny. The beans were spot on and i loved the guacamole. Will be back to try again. The flautas(chicken and beef) were super oily but the food didn’t taste greasy. Good job i guess. I would come back and maybe eat there. WE took it togo and had to drive back to milpitas to eat. Maybe it sat too long. For the price i’ll definitely try it again at least one more time.

This place looks super authentic when you go in, and then the waitress answered me in spanish, so yup, still feeling authentic… and then we ordered food. Not so great, I’m afraid, but I’m giving them three stars instead of two because it was incredibly cheap, so at least I didn’t feel ripped off! Also, I did like the vibe in the place– it has funky yellow and orange booths, and the people in there seemed quite nice. What was wrong with our food, you ask? Well, first of all, I ordered chicken enchiladas, and got cheese ones instead. The cheese was only half melted, so it was basically just some shredded(unmelted) cheese wrapped in a tortilla, with some sauce thrown on top. Oh yeah, and I placed my order in spanish, so unless someone changed the meaning of «pollo» to «unmelted cheese» without telling me, it was not because of the language barrier. My husband ordered a bean and cheese burrito and it also had unmelted cheese in it. Again, it was super ridiculously cheap, so I can’t complain too much, but the food was just not that great.

So many Mexican food eateries in San Jose and I’ve always been going to the same ones. During another one of those nights where Mexican food was the decision my GF and I figured we try something new. It was not long until we found a place we haven’t tried. Easily seen on the corner of Virginia/1st street is El Charro. Plenty of parking out back. Simple and nothing fancy we seat ourselves while the waitress brings us our menu. This place was definitely authentic because they seemed shocked to see someone who wasn’t of Mexican/Spanish descent. Our original waitress had to get help from another who could speak some English. I ordered the Asada(beef) torta, and my GF had the chille relleno & enchilada combo. I also ordered an horchata because it has been a while. You are served with chips and salsa as you wait for your food. They refilled our chips when asked. My torta was of good portion. It cost about $ 5.80 if I can recall. The bread was nice and soft, with some flakyness on the outside. Meat was very tender. Overall tasted very good. My gf’s combo plate was also very good. The relleno was great. Although I havn’t ate too many to compare, but this one I had no problem with. Enchilada, the horchata, rice, etc were on par with others I’ve had. The avocado used in both items we ordered stuck out with me. It tasted better than others I had. Overall a great place for Mexican food. They offer the usual affair such as burritos, tacos, etc. My only gripe, thus the minus 1 star, was the lack salsa for our main entrees.
