Toler’s Leather Depot is a cute little store that fits in so well in Old Town, San Diego. This place has lots of unique hats, belts, and bags. The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is that almost everything here has a western feel to it. There are belts with big buckles, leather items with lots of fringe, and plenty of décor with the western theme. While my son looked at all the«cowboy» hats, and I found the cutest duffle bag. There wasn’t a hat in his size, and I didn’t really need another piece of luggage, but it was sure fun shopping here. Although this store is pretty small, it’s really packed with plenty of wallets, coin purses, and, of course, handbags! I found some nice cross-body bags, which is great because handbags are truly my weakness! The store has good customer service and lots of beautiful leather items. For a fun, western themed gift items, Toler’s Leather is a wonderful stop while in Old Town!

I called ahead to see how late Toler’s was open(until 6pm daily) and to verify they carried something specific I was looking for. The woman I spoke with was very friendly, so I was hoping for a good experience. I had a little trouble finding the shop since their address on Google Maps does not correspond to their actual location(on the interior of Old Town Historical Park), so at 5:45 I attempted to call for help finding them. No answer. I thought maybe they were busy helping a customer, and being such a small shop, perhaps no one was available to answer the phone. I tried again at 5:50, still no answer. I finally located the shop on my own at 5:55 to find the doors shut. I could see two women through the window as I walked up, so I knocked on the door. One of the women asked(through the door) who it was knocking, so I said«a potential customer,» and she said«I’m sorry, we’re closed.» I asked, «even if I know exactly what I want and have cash to pay for it?» She replied, «No, I’m sorry.» I looked at my iPhone to verify I was not mistaken about the time, and asked, «What time do you close?» and she said, «6pm.» I am unbelievably frustrated by the fact that she told me(practically) to my face that they closed at 6, yet here it was 5:55 and she refused to let me in to make a purchase! Not only that, but I’m guessing based on their lack of desire to answer the phone during business hours, I’d have been turned away even if I’d gotten there 10 minutes earlier. I am all for supporting small businesses, but a large retailer would never have the audacity to shut their doors early and turn away paying customers before closing time. I’ll be going elsewhere to make my purchase.

Toler’s Leather is like stepping back in time. I love the authenticity of the shop, the smell of the leather, the wood flooring and the range of products. It’s a cool no pressure shop with super friendly service.
