Horrible, rude and discriminatory towards people! Very Biased! Never been able to get into their shelter! I’ll just keep couch surfing until I get a job! Really f***ed– up people!

Two stars for the food and churches that come in to volunteer. If it wasn’t for them, I would give no stars. Minus 3 stars for their own volunteers. The staff is both rude and biased. Many of the people going there to eat are treated worse than trash. On multiple occasions I have seen them allow their friends to go inside before everyone else including the handicapped people. I have also seen the staff refuse to call an ambulance for a man that was injured while leaving right after eating. The man couldn’t walk without assistance and they were going to send him out on the street. I would rather go hungry than be treated as something less than human. They seriously need to weed out the volunteers that are being rude and biased, I won’t be back until they do and highly recommend nobody else does either. I’m fed up with this supposedly Christian organization’s non-Christian treatment and behaviour.

I had come here for about a total of a month to help out the homeless in preparing dinner for them. I was provided this opportunity by my roommate who does service for Salvation every Wednesday. I went ahead and checked it out and gave my time. This is probably the second biggest Salvation Army building. The first I have been too was Joan Kroc Center off of University Ave by SDSU. But that may not count because they have a different mission than the one in downtown. The facility is great itself, looks a little more headquarters like, has a nice little quad area to rest and relax. Has it’s own parking lot for visitors, volunteers, and guests. Kitchen where we prepared food was clean, organized, and had all the necessary equipment/tools to prepare meals. The room where food is served is set in a good sized meeting/ball room. There are rows of tables and chairs, with a nice little stage at the front. Not really decorative, but it’s not the goal of Salvation to be pretty, it’s about service. Before the meal is given out, a Preacher comes out and starts speaking about the Word. He touches on some things in the bible, but relates and talks about the events that happen in life. Really great motivator and sometimes hits on subjects that are close to home. Getting my volunteer on at SYU! pom pom
