Did a Unilocal search for sports bars and ended up at Terra American Bistro to watch the Cavs play game six in 2016 finals. What a game! I would not classify this as a bar but more of a romantic dining establishment. It has a farm to table theme which I always love the taste of the food was perfect. We ordered the dinner for 2 which was nice because we shared a decent sampling of the food and were were given requested upgrades that were slightly off menu(i.e. I really wanted the special mussels) Get the mussels and truffle fries, keep the mussel sauce for the fries! Mucho Delicioso! My main course was a burger cooked perfectly to medium at my request. I will definately revisit this place next time I am in and around town!

Went for early dinner and happy hour… Had the calamari, garlic fries, cheese Flatbread, seafood soufflé, and short rib tacos — all the food was amazing. The bartender was on top of our drinks and constantly checked up. Fantastic dining experience, will be back!

Somehow disappointed today with the overall length it took to get our food. Reserved an 11:30 spot and ordered immediately. It took Lil over an hour to get 2 of 4 plates. Then the other 2 was received 15 mins after. By the time we got the second set of plates, the first half was done. So sad. Felt that the cook quit or something. Happy Father’s Day.

Food was actually very good; steaks were perfect and service was awesome. The restaurant smells a bit funky in my opinion… Like imported cheese. Anyone who complains about the neighborhood«element» should have dinner at the Sizzler on Imperial Ave… then come back and eat here. I’m tired of the elitists who come to the neighborhood and complain about the area or parking. Go back to(insert trendy neighborhood name here) and take your handlebar ‘stache &10-speed bike with you.

Terrific dinner before heading to the Moxie Theatre! Nick was so accommodating! Let us order over the phone due to bad traffic. Arrived to a beautiful table with wine corked and ready to enjoy. Happy group of moms especially liked the roasted Brussels sprouts, flatbread and calamari! Thanks Nick, we will be back again soon I hope!

So far amazing garlic fries(3.75 @ HH) with house made catsup that’s pretty good. Some acceptable tacos for taco Tuesday with decent seasoning but unfortunately feel sort of phoned in. No IPA’s discounted for happy hour. In short impressive grub seasoning wise but when compared to Bunz it’s a little shy on value. Nice ambiance though, esp for el cajon blvd. Side note, AWESOMEBARTENDRESS!

Had lunch with a friend here on 4÷19÷16 Was surprised to find a nice, interesting place in this part of town! Parking is on the very, very small lot side, but we easily accomplished it… Had this meal been during the weekend, likely would have been a problem. The restaurant is open floor plan, just a big room really. It’s nicely finished and appointed. Our server Helen was the BEST! She was helpful, professional, sincere and funny. We had the cheese + meat plate($ 16.25) to start… two cheeses & two meats(two italian cheeses, one soft, one hard and two salamis), pickled onions, beer-thyme mustard(big ol’ slab of whole grain mustard), tomato-thyme marmalade and candied pecans. We shared a couple small plates as well. Crab cakes(14.00) were excellent, I liked them more than my friend did. Ginger Chicken meatballs($ 10.00) were fantastic… would have eaten two orders. Great Asian flavors, light and tasty! I had the Harvest Bowl(german potato salad, grilled asparagus, balsamic-shallot compote) with Ribeye($ 16.95)…the meat was overcooked, and in general, this dish was a bit of a snooze. We loaded up on drinks, and my friend even had dessert after this feast, with a generous tip, lunch was $ 152.00. Ambiance/Cleanliness-Nice, a bit above average, I liked it!-4 stars Service-Exceptional! 4 stars Food-hit and miss… have to say, overall, the food was the weak point of this meal… touch expensive, and not uniformly exceptional…3 stars I WOULD go back, but would not make a special trip to do so.

After giving this restaurant 3 chances, I have decided that enough is enough. There is in fact so much wrong with it, that I will proceed to describe it in separate paragraphs. Starting from the neighborhood; who in their right mind though that the hooker/drug dealer– infested hood would be a good idea for a restaurant? Good luck if you find yourself in need to walk due to the poor parking to this restaurant and even riskier task: return to your car when your meal is over. The restaurant décor is not that bad, and the menu seems to always be a toss: you either order what you want and hope they don’t «run out» and end up with a burger or the dish of the day; or you order what you want and end up underwhelmed. The food is not particularly bad, but it excels in being blend, unimaginative and unnecessarily expensive. For a restaurant that charges Helix prices, you’d think they would step up the customer service, well think again: not once our waiter came to refill our water glasses, which could somehow make sense if the restaurant was busy, but there was barely any patrons around. That should have been our clue. We will keep going to downtown La Mesa, and so should everyone else.

Came here for a birthday brunch. One of the guys ordered the short rib hash which was amazing! By far the favorite of all the dishes. I ordered the salmon benny. Eggs came out overcooked but they came back with freshly poached eggs and the chipotle cream did make the dish. Salmon patty was a little overpowered by the dill but it was still good. Another ordered the chorizo dish which also was delicious and had really good fresh vegetables. My friend ordered the banana choc chip pancakes which also was not bad but nothing to write home to mom about. And the free bread pudding? Omg sooo good! Bottom line: order the short rib hash and check in for the bread pudding!

Update!!! We went to dine in this time… Short rib tacos are amazing! Truffle fries As well! Also check out the quesadillas… There’s Brie in there! You cannot miss on this menu. Everything is just amazingly delicious. We had the Brussel sprouts, tater tots and bread pudding. Now, let me preface my review with this… We were only looking for an appetizer and some morning sweet for after dinner. Stop the presses… Their banana bread pudding was(maybe) the best sweet dish I’ve ever had. We took it home too… It wasn’t prepared by anyone but our microwave and some unorganized whipped cream/pecan/Carmel drizzle. Still amazing. Will be back for sure!

Terra is a farm to table restaurant meaning they get all of their ingredients locally and fresh. This is what originally drew us in to try them out. We’ve been here a few times now, maybe 5 because my parents like it and so we do birthdays, holidays, etc here sometimes. The location isn’t great. Its not in a nice area. There is very little parking. Its right next to a shady residential neighborhood where we’ve had to park sometimes when their very small lot is full. Luckily, inside is much nicer. Its clean and decorated nicely enough in farm motif. The food is good enough. Not terrible but not amazing. My big issue is that they don’t have nearly enough to choose from. Last time we went, almost half our group ordered the same thing because there are that few of entrees to choose from. I can honestly never find something I like so I have to settle for whatever they have. The service here is terrible. Ever single time. The last time we were there I was dying of thirst the entire meal because no one ever bothered to bring refills. 2 stars because I don’t mind the food. But everything else needs a lot of work.

A great, farm-to-table, restaurant, where even the bacon is «house-made»! Easily accessible off the 8 freeway, located on the corner of El Cajon Blvd., and 71st St., if you turn south on 71st from El Cajon Blvd., you will find a small parking lot in front of the attractive entrance. You then enter a casual, comfortable atmosphere, and are seated. We came for lunch, and received the regular lunch menu, and a menu with the specials. Our server was pleasant and just-the-right-amount attentive. Asking her about the Opah Pastrami on the specials, I was informed that the«pastrami» was the style in which the Opah was cut. Fascinating — never ran across THAT before! I got the lunch Flatbread(only one kind for lunch), which had house-made, chicken/fennel sausage, cheeses, and veggies on house-made flatbread, which was served with a small, side salad. Tasty! My friend ordered the Calamari App, which was served in a very thin, tortilla-like shell(shell was very bland, but Calamari was good), and one of their grilled chicken salads. Nice portion on the salad, but a little pricey, I thought, for lunch($ 13.95). Everything tasted fresh and was thoughtfully prepared. I asked around a little, and several friends had been here and knew all about it, speaking very favorably. Where have I been? I love finding good, farm-to-table eateries, so I’ll be back and bring friends!

First, I really like the atmosphere. Nice enough to be civilized but not pretentious such that you have to dress up. Our server today, Helen, was super nice and helpful and we were very happy with her service! Food was good, but not great. I had an organic baby greens salad — grilled chicken w/pickled vegetables, garbanzo beans, and an herb shallot vinaigrette. The greens were fresh; however, the chicken, while it tasted pretty good, was dry and tough and required significant effort to cut. And as far as I could see there was only *one* pickled vegetable, a carrot slice. My friend had another salad with chicken as her protein — same dry/tough chicken. Since I’ve enjoyed Terra the previous 2 or 3 times I’ve been there, I’m only knocking down one star. And everyone has a less than stellar day, so I will go back.

Been here 4 times — twice with the Mrs., once with a friend, and once for a company lunch. Here are some consistent things you can expect: + Fresh, organic food. Always delicious, doesn’t have the same taste as other restaurants. Vegan tasted like yummy vegan, not drowned-in-stuff-to-make-this-yummy vegan. + Great service overall. Sometimes they are a bit slow on the water refills, but everything else I was satisfied. + Rotating menu with veg/vegan friendly options. Some items remain the same but I’ve seen enough new things to keep me intrigued. * Busy place. We arrived at 5PM and by 6PM the place had most of the tables filled. Make reservations to be safe. — Bit pricey for the portion. My wife & I were 80% full after our meals. This happened both times we came. We are tiny asians. I know in some cultures it’s not good to eat until stuffed, but wanted to make this note. — Neighborhood and parking can be a bit dodgy, especially during peak hours. Positives outweigh the negatives. Still a great restaurant overall but sometimes I feel there’s better bang for your buck out there.

I was very pleased with my first experience at Terra American Bistro. Our waitress was awesome!(I’m sorry, I didn’t catch her name). She was very friendly, attentive, and superb at ensuring our mimosas were filled to the brim ;) I was also pleasantly surprised by the interior décor. Very clean, modern, and cozy! FOOD — Classic French toast: I ordered this with an egg and bacon. Honestly, the french was okay. Nothing in particular stood about it. The bacon was really good though! — Short rib hash: This was very delicious! I highly recommend this dish! I’d definitely consider coming back to try other items on the menu. The service was great and I really enjoyed my time there :) PARKING — Only very few parking spots directly outside the restaurant, but there is street parking available.

After hearing about Terra from a friend, my girlfriends and I decided to try it out. We ordered drinks, they have a small but varied selection of craft beers on tap. For«dinner» we ordered calamari, Brussel sprouts, tater tots, and chicken sausage flat bread. The calamari was delicious. It was served with a flavor similar to that of salt and pepper wings. It had a spicy dipping sauce that was perfect. The Brussel sprouts were divine. Get them. You won’t be disappointed. The tots were nothing like your mama made. They were little bundles of potato love, to be dipped in siracha ketchup. Again, delicious. The Flatbread was the only meh thing we had. I loved the chicken sausage, it was great. But the flat bread was soggy in the middle. None of my group cared for it. The restaurant was busy, but the server was sweet, fun, and attentive. I’ll definitely be back, especially after reading other reviews. Pot roast. Yum. :)

My partner and I visited Terra for restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We ordered the brussel sprouts and Manhattan seafood soup to start. The BS were delicious and covered in garlic! The soup was mostly potatoes, but had a good flavor. Our entrees were the flat iron steak and fish. OMG! The steak was so flavorful, tender, and well seasoned. It far exceeded steak we’ve had at other well known establishments in San Diego. The fried green onions and mashed potatoes were good too. The fish, halibut, was amazing. There was a lot of seasoning, but it did not overpower the fish. It was sweet, crunchy(had crushed hazlenuts), and flaky. This dish came with mashed carrots… still thinking about those! For dessert, we had the banana bread pudding and a pumpkin cheesecake. My partner LOVED the bread pudding(which was delicious, but too sweet for me) and I loved the pumpkin… well really, I love all things pumpkin. The best part was that the pumpkin came with a homemade toffee. I usually skip toffee because it’s typically hard or too chewy. This toffee was the best I’ve ever had. We also had their version of the old fashion, the basil martini, and a dirty martini. The old fashioned was pretty good — again partner loved it, but too sweet for me. The basil martini was an easy drinker, very tasty. The dirty martini had so much olive juice that I couldn’t drink it. When I informed our waiter, he simply had the bartender replace it. No hassle — thank you. As far as service is concerned, it was spot on. Our server, Michael, was happy, attentive, and prompt. He even took the time to recommend brunch, and brought us a brunch menu so we could check it out. I know we will be back, especially to take advantage of the 3 free mimosas or champagne with brunch! Thanks Terra for a great meal, and for proving you don’t have to drive to San Diego for a delicious meal!

This was the first time at Terra and our experience was excellent. Appetizer: the brussel sprouts were excellent. There was nothing subtle about it, and that’s what I like about it. Can’t recall what the others had, but there were no complaints. Entrée: fish was very well done. The seasoning was unique but not unpleasant. I really enjoyed it, and I’m not a fish person. Dessert: came it to my niece b/c I was too full to eat anything else. Service: excellent. Food came quickly and at the same time. Our waitress was attentive. Couldn’t ask for more.

What happened to the great food at this place? Been coming to this place for a few years and now the plates are getting smaller. Last week I had the steak and eggs, it used to get a potato quesadilla with the steak and eggs, now is just a little piece of steak and eggs with a small size serving of veggies. Today I order eggs Sammy, came with four little sausages, they look like those box sausages you get at the store, the sandwich was ok I guess but the plate looked empty. I think we need find another place for brunch on Sundays :(

My first and last visit to this restaurant. I visited for lunch on the second day of restaurant week. I was excited to try this place out because I heard good things. I was there right when they opened and I ordered the calamari appetizer. They said that they ran out of calamari, which was one of only 5 – 6 appetizer options on the restaurant week lunch menu. Ok… So I chose the fried brussel sprouts instead and they were great. Overall, the food was decent and I enjoyed my experience until the check came. They charged me $ 3 extra for truffle fries. The lunch menu for restaurant week did not list the up charge for truffle fries or any fries for that matter, the waitress actually offered them to me as an option for my meal without mentioning that there was an up charge. I asked her specifically if there was an up charge for fries because they weren’t listed on the menu and she said no. I spoke to my waitress about the up charge and she tried to convince me to just pay it. I said that I shouldn’t be charged extra because I was never told that there was an up charge. She said she would see what she could do. She came back to the table with an adjusted check. However, instead of taking the $ 3 off they only took off $ 2 and the waitress again tried to convince me to just pay it. I said to her that all I want is for the up charge to be taken off so if she can’t do it I would like to speak with a manger. Her manager came out, elderly man, and told me that the up charge was clearly stated on their limited lunch menu but not the main restaurant week lunch menu that they were offering first. I did not get a chance to look at the limited lunch menu because we were only given one and I knew what I wanted from the restaurant week lunch menu already. By this time I was clearly frustrated and unhappy. I told him that he needs to adjust my check and he went away to do so. The manager came back with the adjusted check and said«let me give you a suggestion, anywhere you go during restaurant week they will up charge you for truffle fries» I told him that I don’t want his suggestions and gave him a few suggestions of my own for example«you need to train your waitress to let people know that there is an up charge» and«you need to change your restaurant week menu to state the up charge.» By now I’m furious. My father in law went to talk to the manager. Minutes later the elderly man came to me to apologize for the situation. As I was about to leave, the actual restaurant manager(not the elderly man) came out to apologize. Explaining that there was miscommunication and mishandling of the situation especially because it was my waitress’s first day. I appreciate the gesture and his time but my dining experience could not be salvaged, I was still furious at the elderly man. My issue with this situation is that I think it could have been easily fixed and I would have left a happy customer but it wasn’t. Trese, I don’t know who the elderly man was but he needs training in customer service. He treated this situation like it was my fault that I didn’t look at the secondary menu(separate sheets of paper) for information that should be clearly stated on all menus. He had no business giving me his suggestions. This will not be the last issue you have with him involved if you allow him to interact with customers in this capacity. Again, as I told you in the store, I was very happy with my waitress and I thought she did a great job considering it was her first day.

A fantastic place for a evening out. The chef, Jeff Rossman, has a special spin on seasoning and presentation. The focus on farm to table is exemplified in his diverse menu. We have been coming to Terra since it was in the«old location» in Hillcrest. We have never had a bad experience and always look forward to our next visit. A nice bar with big screen serves the sports fan and the menu will disappoint no one. Try the ginger potstickers and the pumpkin ravioli appetizers you will be blown away. I would never come to this restaurant again. RACIST. Smells like old men and prostitutes, great place to have uppity people right on the busiest prostitute street in San Diego. Jesus fix it. If you are black don’t come here. The waiter is rude and so are all the people(red necks) that go here and eat. I will continue to go to my favorite German restaurant Kaiserhoff located in Ocean Beach. Please get some respect for others. You don’t have to move your purse/wallet when I go to the bar and ask for chang, I don’t steal but if I wanted to you clutching a purse wouldn’t stop me. Very bad customer service and the food is horrible and very exspensive. The best thing they have on the menu is the free range chicken and Asian bowl which taste different every time I go. We had a mixed bag of experiences from Terra when we dined there recently for dinner I like that places such as this are making their way into parts of La Mesa not really know for finer dining, but it still needs some work The lobster ragoons were not good. They were way over fried. The lobster bisque was equally as bad. It tasted like nothing but watered down cream, and nothing else. This item was returned I had a starter scallop dish that was nice, but the scallops were super small. Not what I was expecting. The sauce was very good though, and the scallops seemed fresh The potato, brie and red onion quesadilla was pretty good, if not just a tad too spicy, but that is more on a level of my taste. My other half had a salad as well as said it was good, but how do you mess up that? I suppose you could We got a lava cake for dessert which was actually quite good I am not sure if I would come back to Terra or not, but I was glad to finally try it out. Service was decent, but at the times the server talked like a buddy would on a lunch break, and not exactly professional. She was understanding of the soup, and agreed it tasted bad

We had a great experience here for our first time. We decided to go for brunch. I would suggest a reservation –open table. All the breakfast choices come with 3 mimosas or champagne. Yes you heard me right! I had the special — smoked salmon, with eggs over a bed of potatoes with hollandaise. My partner had Short Rib Hash with 2 poached eggs and rosemary hollandaise. The brunch plates were large, delicious, and filling. The environment is cosy and warm, nice tables and long booths against walls. Theres a nice nice bar in the restaurant, so if theres just two dining you may be able to just walk in and eat there. We noticed they have specials almost every day and a social time(happy hour) for two hours during the week. They also have a date night. If you haven’t ate brunch here, definitely try it out! We going to go back and have dinner soon.

Really good food and the bar inside is positioned like an island style table in the middle of everything. This is great because it’s super easy to get drinks. They’ll also bring them to your table obvs. The staff are excellent too and they can do private parties. They can book the whole place out for you to host your event for maybe up to 50 or 80 people. It’s an intimate venue with really trendy décor as well. I’ll be back because it’s awesome here. They also do a great brunch from what I hear. Don’t be scared off by the El Cajon location. It’s as classy and nice as anything in the Del Mar.

Terra American Bistro is surrounded by garages and a beauty supply shop, but it isn’t what you think it is, if you think it’s an innovative chef winning a round of Next New Thing: Real Estate Edition. Taking those things backwards: Terra’s neighborhood is dodgy, but not in a good way. Being next door to a candy factory, now that would be cool. Terra is just in a ghetto, and unless the owner knows something about the City’s development plans that the rest of us have missed, he’s not likely to see UCSD and La Mesa’s hidden money meeting in the middle, bellied up to his bar. While Terra’s owner waits, those people are growing attached to good restaurants in their own safe and visually appealing back yards. Location aside, if Terra’s food was stellar, it might serve as an attractant. But the food is just not very good. Here are some culinary fails that Terra has served up; I note that some of these items don’t appear on Terra’s current menus, but it’s the same kitchen, so… Terra Newly Fashioned. Think I’m kidding? Check the Drinks menu. Terra seriously uses this name for an Old Fashioned, and no one, neither the servers nor the bartenders, snickers when they say it. The drink includes: sage-infused bourbon; tarragon; terra citrus bitters; simple syrup; orange; and brandied cherries. It tastes like Pine-Sol smells. And no one snickers when they serve it. Margherita Flatbread with Smoked Tomato. Good tomatoes. Good Cheese. It was a trick, however, to lift the tomatoes and cheese from that rock-solid board of a bread/plate it was served on. Just kidding. I know it was flatbread. It just seemed like the other thing. Achiote BBQ Chicken Breast with Peach-Serrano Salsa. Dry, flavorless chicken — except for the achiote, which, instead of being a light enhancement to the meat, was its theme. This was buried in an oversweet and unfortunate combination of flavors that never met before, for good reason. «Right Coast» Lobster Roll. It’s hard to screw up lobster; Terra, rising to the challenge, caked on mayonnaise as though it were delicious sauce, though, thinking about it, the mayo was useful in softening the dried out bread/roll on which the sandwich was served. Special mention for the side of soggy, sour coleslaw that some genius decided would be incomplete unless he added… ginger. Ever have food that made you angry because you couldn’t figure out how to remove all traces of it from your plate? This was that. Roasted Beets and Goat Cheese with Toasted Chipped Hazelnuts. These were good. I can’t imagine how they could be otherwise. So were the Roasted Brussels Sprouts, for the same reason. I note that, since first tasting toasted chipped hazelnuts at Terra American Bistro, I have shamelessly stolen the idea for my own home-roasted Brussels sprouts and other dishes. So thanks, Terra; the hazelnut idea cost me about $ 200 and several hours of my life, but it was worth it; people love my Brussels sprouts. One final note: Terra has offered a Unilocal checkin special, a slice of bread pudding, that was, in fact, a burnt and dry, gnarled little corner of the pan. As I captioned my photo of the treat, «Guess that’ll teach me to use a checkin offer at Terra American Bistro.» ********** I heard from Terra’s owner, who repeated a snippet of my review, pointing out that the menu has changed. Here was my response: «I noted that many of the items I described aren’t on your current menu. You haven’t added new information here. Perhaps if you could speak to the problems the kitchen had, and what you’ve done to address those issues, your comments would prove useful. I’ll modify my review to reflect this exchange. Thanks for any productive information you can contribute.»

LOVE this place! Came here for brunch on Easter Sunday with reservations made at 9am. I called in to move it to 9:30 and they moved it with no problem! The parking lot is fairly small, but there is some street parking and a few spaces toward the back side of the restaurant. Doesn’t look like anything spectacular from the outside, so don’t judge this book by it’s cover! The interior décor is pretty cute with i think it was large ground coffee bags attached to the ceiling roof. Upon looking at the brunch menu, the very top of the menu(you can’t miss it) is your meal comes with free mimosas! WHAT?! Well, it said 3, but WHAT?! Unfortunately I only had one): but what an awesome offer. Before I was able to ask our waitress what was popular, she told us. And right before I could ask what her favorite items were, she told us. Mind reader! I ordered the breakfast quesadilla subbing my eggs for egg whites. It was divine! Crispy 4-slices of quesadilla filled with gooey cheese, egg whites, and tasty/savory/tender short ribs! Props to the chef who put this together. It came with a palm size scoop of sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. I didn’t eat the sour cream, but the guacamole was tasty and the pico de gallo had a minor kick to it. My table split the stuffed french toast… bad and good decision. Good because it was delicious, bad because we wanted more! Fairly thick slices of bread(about one slice was equivalent to a general slice of sandwich bread) crusted with cooked down cornflakes(obviously) but still maintained a nice, sweet crunch, as if it was caramelized(which it might have been?). Two slices of bread weren’t stuffed, but was spread with strawberry cream cheese. I’d say it’s more like strawberry cream cheese spread french toast, but clearly that makes no sense nor does it sound appealing. Regardless, it was deliciously served with syrup poured on it already and it wasn’t eye-tweaking sweet, but it was a general sweet like any other type of french toast served with syrup. Also, there is an offer through Unilocal for a free bread pudding with a check-in. Yes, please! I got it to go because there was no way I, or my table, was able to eat that after our 1.25 meals. Take advantage of the offer and mimosas! Definite must!

A breakfast entrée that comes with 3 glasses of champagne… that they really dont keep track of? COUNTMEIN! Iver been wanting to dine at Terra since I tried their food ona Taste of College Area. my friend was having a birthday brunch there and there was a group of 20 of us. It is a great brunch spot for large groups! I would def go back for my own birthday! I ordered the chicken chorizo in a skillet, I was a bit skeptical cause I have only tried Soyrizo, not the real deal, but this chicken chorizo was tasty! The flavors or the meat were great and it came with fresh veggies, amazing potoates and eggs. for an entrée for under $ 15 with booze, this was friggin awesome! The champagne isnt Andre either, it was decent for the price and the experience. The waitress was super helpful and provided recommendations and answered a ton of my many questions. My hubby ordered the bloody marys for 2 for $ 20. It came with a ton of toppings to make the perfect bloody mary, he was a big fan. Super cute place, super good food, nice staff, and included booze. what more could you want for a weekend brunch?
