The employees at Hungry Lu’s are the nicest people I’ve ever met in a sandwich shop. I choose Hungry Lu’s over every other sandwich place in OB because of their friendliness. They go out of their way to make you feel special and they treat you like family. We almost always get some sort of cookie on the house. The restaurant is also very clean inside and the food always looks delicious! I like to eat here at least twice a month! Every day is a good day for a canoli!

had a personal pizza called rustica. Super tasty and definitely enough food for two. Sat outside to eat and charlie brought it right to me. Not a lot of seating, but enough for a few people. Charlie was the guy working the register and he was cool. Respectful and friendly at the same time. Probably a manager with the respect he demanded from coworkers while still maintaining a smile or they just have a really good work environment. cookies were bomb.

My favorite sandwich shop in ob. The Tunisia is my favorite. Always super friendly when I come in. The side salsa and pastas are amazing and so are the cookies. Always a pleasure to come for a quality sandwich

Came here in October 2015 to get some deli meats while on vacation for a DIY meat-and-cheese board. We were tempted by the homemade Italian cookies and never regretted it. The owner was friendly and told us about his place(including the homemade rolls). He threw in a roll for good measure. Next time I find myself in Ocean Beach I’m coming here.

Best sandwiches and bakery in San Diego, fresh baked goods, bread and good quality meat’s. The Italian sub is single handedly responsible for my wife having a 9 pound 14 ounce baby on the 17th of December 2015. We love you guys and love living near you. Ian and Cassie.

What looks like a «nothing special» sandwich shop from the front is actually a sandwich and«from scratch» baked good store that is quite impressive. A lot of Italian themed pastry and food, plus some Jewish style sandwiches as well. Quite impressive!

Walking down the street to grab phở at the noodle house and a Cannoli caught my attention! First time in and hands down the best fresh cookies and cannoli I’ve had! Beats the one I had in Venice Italy hands down.

The service here was awesome~~ and their sandwiches are so delicious~ highly recommend the pastrami! The owner was really welcoming~ he really is really personable and genuinely interested in making connections with his customers. He even game me a chocolate dipped ladyfinger to try as he made a whole batch fresh earlier that day. The ladyfingers were probably the best cookies I’ve had. Honestly though, the service made my experience at Hungary Lu’s, not to down play the sandwiches and cookies there. I look forward to going there again!

Staff is extremely friendly, we had a dog with us and they gave her some water and a treat! There were also some drunk folk from a bar down the street who ordered some sandwiches and the guy here walked all the way to the bar to give them their food. Bread is baked on site daily. I got the Feta grilled cheese and it was amazing. Will come back to give the canolis a try!

Stinky Jermy said as we arrived into San Diego, «we gotta go to Hungry Lu’s first.» And I said what the heck was Hungry Lu’s? Well, it was probably one of the nicest surprises I’ve had in ages. It’s an Italian deli, and their sandwiches looked good. But, their desserts, Holy Cannoli! Literally. They have the cannoli shells baked and on standby so when you order one or two or four, they stuff them right there In front of you and add pistachios or chocolate chips. There’s a couple of bar stools for you to enjoy indoors and a few tables to enjoy outside. But that’s not all! Oh no. They have home made macaroon cookies. Chocolate ones too. Mama Mia!!! Plus home made lemon powdered cookies and other goodies. Good grief. I had to buy two of everything. And the only reason I didn’t give a full 5 stars is cause I didn’t try the food. But I’m sure they deserve all 5. This is a great spot for a delish, homemade dessert. Definitely, please come here and indulge.

Great sandwiches ordered turkey provolone and vegetarian sub. Charley was the employee who helped us with ordering and explained how they make everything from scratch — cool place. NOTETOOWNER: You need to give Charley a raise — he treats the place and customers like it’s his own. Great customer service. Gave our dog water and a treat. One recommendation would be to have another umbrella for the outdoor seating. very hot sitting in the sun.

I have died and gone to heaven! I had a pastrami sandwich, Italian olives and purchase some Italian blossom chamomile tea for later. it was the most amazing sandwich. Perfectly done. not overly: good flavors, crisp pickle, delicious sauce, amazing! The service was spot on and Charlie’s a great guy. can’t wait to go back!

i’m a local to OB and have eaten at every place around… more than once. I always like Hungry Lu’s, usually get a sandwich. After having their sausage on something, i decided to have a sausage sandwich one day. That was very disappointing. i asked for it with a little sauce and few peppers. what i got was speghetti sauce with a bunch of peppers and one small sausage link… all in a nice big roll. maybe enough sausage for half the sandwich and it was a mess to eat and mostly peppers and soupy sauce(even though i asked for it almost dry with little) sad.

In search for dessert in OB, I came across Hungry Lu’s. I had originally wanted to hit the beach sweets restaurant on Newport, but lack of parking pushed me away. The parking on Voltaire is a lot easier to swing. Plenty of parking is 15 minute parking there, so keep that in mind that take out might be a better bet. I haven’t tried their subs yet, so I reserve that final star for an update, but for now their dessert is the bomb! We ordered cannoli’s that they filled when you order it. I had the chocolate dipped cannoli, which melted in this hot spell quickly. The dessert is rich and filling. One is definitely plenty. Ambience is no frills. This is a hole in the wall establishment with great food. I can’t wait to go back.
