Very sad news to report: Gus’s is no more. The popular eatery has closed it’s doors for the very last time. On the front windows, there is a large sign posted thanking their loyal customers. When I used to work at the Point Loma fishing docks, all the salty dogs would brave the trek across Rosecrans to enjoy the delicious food. I loved their subs myself. However, as is the case across much of the Village, greedy land barons are grabbing up every spare lot and piece of property to build MORECONDOS and RUIN the character and vibe of the peninsula with their over-sized & over-priced real estate. In fact, that is why Gus’s closed. A developer bought the parcel on Rosecrans and Byron St. where Gus’s, a jewelry store and a now closed Blockbuster video once stood. Soon the businesses will be razed and MORECONDOS will be squeezed in. Thank you to Gus’s for the great food for so many years.

Probably my favorite pizza in SD and definetely one of the best in the area. Cheaper than Pizza Nova and quieter than Oggi’s :) It’s very ‘mom and pop’ and almost has an East Coast feel to it. It’s not too fussy and they give you decent portions. My favorite is their Greek pizza.

Stopped by this place for lunch yesterday and there were signs posted on the window saying that Gus lost his lease and the restaurant will be closing August 14th. Bummmmer. Better get your food sooner rather than later.

This place has a small town feel to it. A bit dingy but well worth the wait. Quality sandwiches and at a respectable rate. Toasted in an oven right behind the counter, the food is prepared while the customer waits. I recommend this place if you wanted something quick but not fast food. They get busy at lunch and I waited about 15 minutes for my sandwich but others waited less time. All depended on the food ordered. I’d visit again.

Lunch time visit — lots of people in the place so I figured must be a local favorite and should give it a try. Counter staff were very friendly and eager to take customers’ orders. I ordered the — 9″ Gus’s Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. Whoa — loaded with meat and cheese and I could only eat half. Normally comes with onions and mushrooms but I opted out on those. I thought a Root Beer might be a good drink choice and I was correct. The flavor mix was very good. However, I noticed that the sandwich was a little bit on the salty side. I brought the other half back to my office and the aroma filled the room. I had many people stop by and inquire about the odor. I think they were hungry, but I wasn’t going to share. Ha ha. Later in the day, I started in on the second half and unfortunately I had to toss it because it was way too salty. Odd — the sandwich was cold and definitely did not taste that salty when warm. Lesson — eat it when it’s hot.

We were looking for a quick bite before heading back to the airport. I had passed this place a million times when I was growing up and visiting the area, but never thought much of it. Once we pulled in the parking lot, we knew it would be good… there were cops and military eating there… two groups of people who don’t have the time to waste on crappy eats… so always a good sign to see them eating at a place. The food was good, tasty and fresh. Pretty reasonably priced, and definitely had GENEROUS portions. I felt bad eating only half of my sandwich, but half was twice the size of any pastrami I had ever had! Will definitely put them in the rotation of places to eat when I am in the area! (oh, and the ladies room was clean and smelled good… sometimes hard to come by in hole in the wall places)

I’ve not going to lie… I’ve eaten here SEVERAL times over the past few weeks. Yes, it’s a stone’s throw from my office, but also because they offer up some pretty tasty cuisine. My go-to’s are the Chicken Salad, which is a hefty salad with some decent italian dressing and a mean side order of garlic bread which makes people stay away from me after lunch(score!!). My other one is their Gyro combo which is PACKED with toasty/yummy gyro meat, great tzaziki sauce and an order of fries. For less than $ 10 for either plate, you can’t really beat that. Especially since everything is made to order and NEVER dissapoints. Other fast-food joints can suck it!

Wow… The portion sizes here are absolutely huge for the price and the food is damn delicious… parking sucks, seating sucks and they try to rush you as fast as they can to get to the next customer so that’s the reason they get four stars instead of five. And the pastrami was very salty too :/

For 3 years, my co-workers raved about this place. I finally decided to join them during lunch time. The facility wasn’t full nor did it take a long time to receive my order. Parking wasn’t too bad, indoor seating area is quaint, and outside seating area is shaded. Menu is easy to read and understand. Along with your sandwich, you can choose soup, fries, or chips. I ordered the famous Diego Sandwich, lentil soup, and a Mango Snapple. The lentil soup was served first. It looked decent enough and my first time trying this recipe. It was okay. My Diego Sandwich was turkey meat, avocado, lettuce, and tomato; wasn’t that great. The bread was dry and plain. The thinly sliced avocado was hidden wrapped in the lettuce. I took maybe 3 bites and didn’t finish the rest. With a group of 11, with each ordering something different, NOTHING looked appealing. I just don’t know what makes this place so special. Sorry. Maybe this place isn’t for me but at least I can say that I did eat here but didn’t enjoy it.

Back at Gus’s for my yearly physical. I mean visit. Before going in, I read some of the reviews on Unilocal and saw some folks raving about the Pastrami Sandwich. So, when I arrived and it was time to order, I had to see what all the hub bub was about. When my order came up and before biting in, I took the listed pictures. All I will say is, I wish someone would invent Smell and Taste-O-Vision. I can’t put into words how delicious this sandwich is. Just the right amount of mustard. The bread coated lightly in butter before being toasted and the Pastrami has to come from another world or planet because I’ve never tasted it so good before. Gus’s is definitely a mustest when in the Point Loma area.

These guys make a great Reuben sandwich, and for a decent price TVs on, usually showing the game on one, and a show on the other… I liked that. something for everybody here.

I normally get the Philly cheese steak, but to switch it up a little, I tried the hot pastrami last week, and it was good too! The reason for three stars is that this place is exactly«A-OK». I know that I’ll get a reasonably priced lunch(with leftovers) that is reasonably tasty. If you like HUGE onion rings, then this is definitely the place for you. I like mine to be slightly thinner because if it’s easier to bite, then I can eat it faster! haha. The breading is good, not great and not bad. Both the cheese steak and the hot pastrami are a little on the salty side, but sometimes I’m in the mood for that.

«I’m bigger than you are, I’m higher in the food chain… Get in my belly!» — Fat Bastard from Austin Powers — The Spy who Shagged me Holy crap… my friends weren’t kidding when they said the subs here are HUGE. I went here with my co-worker and we ordered a 12″ Cheese Steak sub with a side order of steak fries. The thing was literally the size of a new born baby. I had to cut my portion of the 6″ sub in half so I could pick it up. The steak was tender, well seasoned and the cheese wasn’t too overpowering or making the sandwich greasy. It was a very good balance of meat, cheese, bread and flavor. Although the sandwich was about 13 bucks, you get what you paid for. This sub would probably take a normal person 3 sittings to finish. The next time I come, I’ll split the 8″ sub so I can walk out comfortably full. A little about my credentials: I first got into cooking & food when I was in college. After being rejected by numerous girls and getting zero action, I decided it was time for a change. I needed a new makeover to boost my geeky, engineering image. I applied for a cooking position at a Mediterranean-Italian Restaurant near my home and learned to cook all sorts of pastas and dishes. I never became a professional chef, but I continue to enjoy & love food. 8 years later and 55 lbs heavier, I am now an engineer that travels all over the world trying new foods and learning about different cultures.
