very cool atmosphere with average service and decent tasting pizza. I love the rustic look with the big, heavy, comfy chairs, dim lighting and cozy feel. they were playing pretty loud music which I wasn’t a fan of but understand that this is probably more a drinking/party establishment than a family restaurant. the server took our order quickly and then sorta forgot about us, never refilling waters or checking to see how we liked the pizza. between three of us, we split one small pizza which was plenty. we each got a few pieces and were satisfied. pretty good deal when it only ends up being $ 4 or $ 5 per person. the drinks on the other hand, were pretty pricey; $ 12 for their specialty cocktails. there is little to no variety on what they offer here… it’s strictly pizza. I did notice one salad on the menu which you could add chicken to, but other than that, you’re SOL if you aren’t in a pizza mood. it was an overall average experience, but nothing that makes me want to come back.

This event actually happened to me about 4 years ago only I forgot to post a review about it until now. There were a few of us out and about and we had a couple drinks prior to migrating to Basic. We get to the door and this Neandertal looking Bald, 300 lb tatoo covered peckerwood bouncer tells us that I am too intoxicated to come in because I tripped on a protruding railing they had in front which I would have done sober. I had had a couple drinks with dinner but the night was young and I was nowhere near intoxicated or anymore so than those in the bar. He then says I can enter the bar if I don’t order anything, which is ridiculous. He follows me around the bar and waited for me to order a drink and power tripped on me when I did and took it out of my hand and escorted me out. He shouldn’t have let me in there in the first place if he thought I was drunk, instead he wouldn’t let me finish my drink and wasted my money although I had supported this place many times in the past and often used them for large pizza orders for business events. I will not support them and their backward policies enforced my uneducated morons like the fat cave man at the door.

Pizza’s were thin, which I really enjoy, but they were floppy and greasy. Our group ordered pepperoni, cheese, mashed potato, veggie, and chicken pizzas. I thought they were good, but not great. I felt like they lacked spices. I don’t think i’d crave to go here, but the ambiance is nice for a group outing with open lounge chairs and a pretty solid happy hour. They also have billiards! The BEST pizza I have ever had. Just wow. Perfect atmosphere, decent service, strong drinks, and phenomenal pizza. Anytime I have out of town visitors, I take them here, they are impressed every time. Perfect for large groups, they have a private section that can hold a lot of people.

Ordered a small, half«mashed»(Mozz, Mashed Potato, and Bacon) and half our way. Was about $ 16. It’s a really great price compared to other pizza place’s portions/number of toppings/deliciousness. The mashed half of the pizza was pretty good. It didn’t blow me away like it did for others here. There could’ve been more bacon. The«mashed» potatoes were more like chunked potatoes instead. We added green onions at home to give it an extra flavor profile. I liked the crust. It was thin, flexible, and durable enough to hold all the toppings. The other half was pretty good too. Probably would’ve been better if it didn’t share the same base as the mashed but it’s all good.
The happy hour pizza samples were cold, wish there would’ve been a heat source by it.

I was pleasantly surprised with the pizza here. Given it was hustling and bustling and seemed more like a fun bar than a pizza place, I wasn’t expecting too much but a good friend said its amazing. I decided to try the pizza they are known for — the white pizza with mashed potato and bacon. The other half of the pizza we got pepperoni and mushrooms and onion. The mashed potato side blew me away! I wasn’t expecting it to be that good and I’m not usually a super big fan of white pies since I always think you need marinara sauce for it to be good. But my friend and I gobbled up that whole pie in less than 10 minutes. It was so so so good! Next time I’m in sd, I’ll have to come back here.

Apparently it’s harder to find a place to eat at 10pm on a Thursday night in the gaslamp of San Diego than one would think. But this is one of the spots where you can! Cocktails and beer and wine. The pizzas are HUGE. Like they are the size of a giant sheet pan. They are thin crust and quite good. I especially liked the one with ricotta cheese and basil. Nice big space, so a good spot to go with a group. It has a warehouse feel — high ceilings with lots of wood.

Four of us stopped in for late night pizza. The large«so meaty» wasn’t so meaty after all, but for $ 30, it was delicious and more than enough. The fresh basil, goat cheese and bacon and meatball meshed well, but if flimsy pizza isn’t your thing, this place won’t do it for you. It was messy, but that didn’t bother me at all. What did bother me was them asking if they could close out our tab before we even got served our pizza. What if we wanted more food? Or perhaps another round of drinks to wash down the overtly bitter Palomas? I could understand the rush if they were trying to close, but they weren’t, and that’s what leaves me scratching my head. Fortunately, the pizza was delicious to make up for the drinks and pressing service.

Looking for a place to eat after the Padres game? Come here! Less than a 10 minute walk away. At night this place is fantastic! There is a DJ who plays old school jams: Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, & new music too. There is a separate area for their restaurant & another area with a dance floor & a long bar with some lounge sitting dispersed throughout. People wear casual, fancy, & like us, ballgame attire. Customer service was friendly & fast! Mashed(White Pie, Mozzarella, mashed potato, bacon): Flavorful! It was slightly dry & I think that was due to the mashed potato but nonetheless, it was good. I ordered a small for 4 of us & it was large enough for us to each have a slice each & leftovers! Not a bad deal.

Q: What do you suppose we craved most after a long plane ride and a full week of eating our way around Hawaii? A: Well, pizza, of course. And gosh darn it, one of the best places in San Diego(well, that’s what Unilocalers said, anyway) was still open at midnight when you needed it most. My only problem was it was midnight, downtown, very dark, and more than just cockroaches were roaming the streets at that hour. Feeling quite vulnerable with less than desirable street lighting and no nearby street parking available, I was unwilling to park and go inside. Solution? Call for take-out, find a safe place where I could drool at pizza pictures on Unilocal for 20 minutes(gawd, what did we do before cell phones?), then pull the getaway car up to the front door and push Mr. B out of the car to face the boogy man alone, while I lay in wait, doors locked and engine running. Yeah, well, maybe a bit scardy-cat dramatic, but I was so damn hungry and tired, and quite unwilling to ruin my happy Hawaiian vibe. It seemed the right decision at that particular moment. And I got my pizza. Our car smelled divine as we drove back to our hotel room. Super thin crust, but not crispy. I didn’t care. We ordered our usual pepperoni, sausage and mushroom. Really nice ingredients, the pizza sauce was most delicious, the crust tasted wonderful, too. Everything was so, so right. Maybe I was hoping for a little more of that good tasting cheese, but we sure did easily vacuum our«small» which turns out was larger than a turkey platter. Yes, we found a new kind of pizza nirvana. Next time I might even get out of the car. I just won’t arrive at midnight. Cool looking place inside, btw.

Came here for the first time Saturday night for a birthday and hangout with some of my hula sisters. They check IDs when you come in but there is no cover charge. It’s an awesome place to get pizza, lounge, dance and play pool. I ordered a small pepperoni pizza which came out to $ 15. It’s pretty good and comes with thin crust. There’s a DJ who plays a lot of hip hop and top 40, we were just having fun dancing! It’s a casual lounge to kick back and relax with your friends on the weekends. Great place! I definitely want to come back! There’s a parking garage right across from Basic and it’s $ 10 for the night until 3am. That’s pretty cheap for Downtown. You can also park there for Padres games.

Went here for happy hour because they have free pizza. The beer selection was what you would expect from a bar in San Diego. The pizza was ok. I’m not a huge fan of pizza without red sauce on it but it was ok. We did get a slice with red sauce that is more what I would call pizza. When the free pizza comes out during happy hour you need to be kinda quick on the draw to get some as it does go fast. They cut it in to strips to get more pieces out of 1 big pie that comes out on a cookie sheet. That’s fine, just try not to be greedy as there’s a whole crowd of people that are waiting for a slice as well. One thing I didn’t notice is that there are red pepper and Parmesan cheese shakers on the tables, so when you get a plate of pizza don’t spend time at the stand with the pepper and cheese go and take care of that at your table. All in all this is a great place to hang out as they have great seating right next to the side walk to watch people pass by and the beautiful San Diego weather. I will go back without a doubt, but if you’re wanting great pizza it’s better to stick with Little Italy of that’s your mission.

Nice spot downtown for drinks, watching sports and just hanging out. Super close to Petco Park. It’s a great place to have a bite to eat and a beer before going to the Padres game. Hopefully to smash up on some Dodgers or Giants. If you are in a group. Pitchers of beer and pizza are the way to go. If everyone chips in. It makes it an affordable part of your downtown experience because every where else downtown is pretty much a rip off. Having two bar areas and a few lounge areas. There is plenty of seating or areas to stand; except baseball Opening Day. That place was packed that day. I can see on non game nights the place not being so bad. The staff is pretty chill. The have smiles on there faces and seem to love what they do. The place has a good vibe. I can see coming back.

There is definitely nothing basic about this place!(The joke… ha…ha) This place is located right next to Petco Park. I was really impressed with the interior! On the left side is the bar(which I believe had a pool table) and the right side with regular tables. The windows are HUGE and bring a lot of light into the restaurant. There is also a very large fan but I don’t think it does much cooling and is there mainly as decoration. Still cool though. The menu is pretty simple and straight forward. You can choose a base pizza and whatever toppings you want or you can choose on of their set pizzas. I ordered the small white pizza with mozzarella, garlic, and bacon. My best friend ordered the small pepper pizza. We both were not expecting how large these pizzas were! We didn’t know till after our pizzas arrived that those around us were sharing the pizzas. I was extremely happy with my pizza. It was, what I would consider, thin crust. They gave a good amount of bacon. Some places have a light hand when putting toppings on so I was glad to see that there was enough to satisfy me. The amount of garlic was just right too, however I’m not too sure if the garlic was in the form of a spread or was crushed and sprinkled on the pizza. Either way, it was delicious! I didn’t see much of our waiter, but the few times we did see him, he was very kind! I think the pricing is spot on with the amount of pizza you get. It’s definitely worth every penny!

Okay so, I actually did not want to come here. I wanted sushi. But by the time our pizza came and I took a bite, I forgot about my earlier cravings altogether. The pizza here is seriously awesome. Some of the better pizza I’ve had since living downtown. They’re HUGE and they’re delicious. QUANTITYANDQUALITY. finally!!! Why do I always have to choose between the two? We also got a house salad which was just okay. Needed more dressing and perhaps a few other ingredients. I just felt it was lacking. I didn’t care much for the restaurant itself. I was so hot the entire time. And it is SO loud. I also found it really odd that they carded us at the door but then they were letting families with young children in after us. Definitely not a place for kids in my opinion and it just seemed contradictory. Is it for people over 21, or not? The service was not great. Not sure if they were understaffed or what but I had to ask the hostess to bring me more water because I hadn’t seen our waitress in a while. Usually bad service and atmosphere will deter me but I can’t resist good pizza so I’ll probably be back. If not, I’ll just order delivery!

Great pizza and great spot for day drinking or nightlife! Located in East Village, *Basic* is perfect for day or night out on the town for drinks, great music, and getting your grub on. I first did basic for my birthday seven years ago and it was a neat spot for dinner for a party of 8! Back when I went they had techno music that night after grubbing in the restaurant side, the lounge is perfect for partying at afterwards. And now fast forward to currently. the music is still awesome with great DJ’s on weekend nights great for sipping drinks, or those who want to get their dance on there’s a small dance floor. The food here is still delish! This past weekend had the Base Pie: WHITE W/MOZZ and pepperoni for toppings. The large pizza is huge with plenty of slices to enjoy all of it’s goodness. And for day drinking the drinks I had here were crafted well. I had the«Basic Paloma» and Tequila with Pineapple Juice. Great for sipping! Overall, a great option for drinks and excellent pizza with nice service and a fun ambiance!~ =]]

This is the spot for Tuesday night’s… It’s a huge space with good pizza that satiates late night munchies and cocktails that are decent, although pricey. They host Art Tuesday’s that include a few local artists(3 that night) or group shows with their art displayed around the bar and for sale. Great DJ spinning a mix of different music… The vibes are pretty cool for gaslamp area. Open space with an industrial feel, steel pipes, tall ceiling, biggest ceiling fan ever, bricks lining the walls, and nice airflow… You feel like you’re at a party in a really great space. Wasn’t packed, but still a fun, busy environment. Drinks and food was easy to order. Parking is always a pain in gaslamp, but not on a Tuesday night. My friends and I had a good time and I recommend it to others. I’m a fan and I’ll be back!

Our favorite place to go for work functions and pregaming with friends. Sits right across thestreet from Petco Park. Atmosphere is great, friendly and the open glass garage doors give this place a large open feel when they are open. The mashed potato and bacon pizza is so good. Must try.

Really great spot in the East Village. Full disclosure, I’ve never had their pizza but it looks phenomenal and smells delicious. Been in here several times for cocktails throughout the week and a couple times on their Tuesday’s when they have art night. The spot itself has great ambiance. You’d think it was an old service bay renovated into a bar but the bartender let me know it use to be a surfboard factory. It’s really neat. Very high ceilings, cool brick work, comfortable bar stools, wide selection of booze, good beer specials, and an open layout with funky couches and high tables. There’s a pool table in the back, free pizza at happy hours, and always friendly service. The bartenders remember you if you frequent the place, know you by name and take care of you. That can be hard to come by even as a local in this area of San Diego and it definitely makes it worth going back. Definitely should be on your go-to list in San Diego.

Great alternative to URBN. The meatball pizza was really good and tasted great as leftovers the next day. My friend normally doesn’t like bacon in her food but she enjoyed it on the mashed potato pizza. We liked how the menu wasn’t über complicated(fairly direct and basic hahaha). Chill vibes all over the place and of course a thumbs up for the pizza flavors. I might actually even say that it had a bit more flavor compared to URBN and I like going to URBN. Good job, Basic.

Best pizza: gluten free and gluten full. The salad? Would walk a thousand miles for it. This place has been open for over five years and it still kills it-AND it’s just as good when it opened(I can’t remember when it opened, but I went.) On Padre days or event days, I’d suggest you make reservations FAR in advance because otherwise you will be waiting forEVER to get an open seat. And their happy hour is great pricing! Free pizza on non-game days! But people will wait in line for it, so don’t expect to hold yourself over from hunger!

But I’m use to vegas prices so they are overpriced for sure but didn’t know other parts of the world charge less! Amazing pizza there so great drunk food or for the pre game! Cute fun place with amazing amazing amazing dj’s spinning all night. All the good pop, r&b, fun classics mixed. The lights get dimmer and dimmer as the night goes on which is nice too! Good thin crust pizza! My first experience there was awesome. However, consistency is so important. Today was a total miss. Poor customer service can definitely affect my perception of a restaurant. Our server got our order wrong and was consistently unattentive to us and other guests. She waited until we asked for the check to follow up with us. It was such an awkward and disappointing dining experience that I doubt I’ll go back… maybe a «To Go» order… maybe.

Solid place. Nice music. Great service! The pizza was good, I got the pepper, small size. It tasted fine. Nice thin crust, nice mix of Gorgonzola and mozzarella cheese. I learned a couple things though, the small is large enough for two people to split. And they only have about three good beers on tap. Still in all, it’s a quality establishment, has good food, great service, and on Tuesdays there is an art night! I might have to try that. Oh, I almost forgot! This is the place that has mashed potato and bacon pizza. I was not that adventurous tonight, another reason to stop back by. I feel pretty confident it’s good but I’ll have to get back to you on that…

On a hot Friday date night, we strolled in and got carded at the door. Hmm… it was weird, especially when we could see kids eating in the main dining area. Did they get carded too? Anyway, we were seated and looked over the menu. Like it’s namesake, the menu was pretty basic. There weren’t too many options, but after reading so many fabu reviews just one pizza, I convinced my date that we had to go for the«MASHED» pizza. Initially I was concerned that the mashed potato would be too heavy for the crust, but it the potatoes were proportioned just right. The crust was light and chewy and I loved the quality bacon. The size small pizza was only $ 12.50! Such a great deal for the neighborhood. Given the plethora of pizza establishments in San Diego, after awhile everything starts to taste and look the same. I’m happy to report that BASIC is quite good and does stand out from it’s competitors. Can’t wait to go back!

GREATBAR&PIZZAFORGROUPS There is Basic, a dining area, and Bar Basic, a lounge area where you can get the same food items with drinks. I was a large of group of 10 people, including a baby in a stroller. Although this is a lounge/restaurant, we were still allowed to bring the kid and there was no dress code at all! Unpretentious, simple, and cool. There is also one pool table available for anyone to play; at one point a couple kids less than the age of 10 years old were playing. This place is family friendly while being trendy and cool! There were some good 90’s throwback songs playing along with chiller EDM songs. + MARGPIE: A classic margherita pizza with mozzarella, basil, and tomato, this was our favorite pie! The large is massive with 12 large square slices. ~ MASHEDPIE: This pizza had mashed potato and bacon but was a little bit too salty for me. It was a good contrast against the margherita pizza if you wanted to have a more interesting pizza! We sat around a lounge table and pulled multiple chairs around it, but was still served by a waitress for anything that we needed — extra napkins, more water, refills, more cocktails/shots, and clearing the table after we were done. This place does not skimp on service!

Thank God for this place! It saved my life. I nearly died of starvation after the Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium where I refused to spend 10 bucks on a hot dog. After riding the rail back to the Gaslamp, I was in need of a snack. We hit a bar around midnight that I had regretfully not called and asked if the kitchen was open. It was not and after a mule and a beer, I was in dire straits. The bartender gave us the name of two places nearby that served food late. Called the first one and they said it was open but a little hesitantly. We trekked the 4 blocks to it from the bar only to find that upon entering, the chef was cleaning up and shutin it down. My body began to digest stored fat which luckily, thanks to Unilocal, there was plenty of. Basic was my last hope or I was a goner. It was open. It was amazing. It will hold a special place in my heart forever. We got a large mashed pizza that is more pizza than two starved people can eat. White sauce, paper thin crust, mashed potato, and bacon. It came with a spicy marinara but ranch was calling my name. Our friends enjoyed the pepperoni and margarita pizzas. The marg had huge halves of tomato roasted on top and had it not been for the giant size of our pizza, I may have had a slice. We will be back so I’m not worried about not trying it. They have an IPA that is made for their restaurants and it went down easily. The staff was very friendly and took care of everything. We left at 2 and I was able to walk back to the hotel without a hunger faint. Thanks Basic.

Came here a few days ago for an art show and I had a good experience. Large venue, and not too busy so ordering things went smoothly. Got a beer at the bar($ 6) which was good, and tried their mashed potato pizza in the dining area which was pretty tasty. Large portion so worth the price, as I’ve heard, although the waitress kept forgetting to bring the bill. Art show was really cool, and I would recommend checking it out(Tuesday nights). True story: I got carded at the door to a pizza place. Granted, there’s a «lounge»(bar) on the left side, but there were also kids in the part to which I was actually heading. After convincing the bouncer that my head full of imaginary hair and I are in fact older than 21 and thus legally eligible to eat pizza, we entered and ordered the«mashed» pizza, which, not surprisingly, features mashed potatoes but also bacon. I have to say it was the best mashed potato pizza I’ve ever had. It’s also only the second(after URBN’s) so that bar is pretty low. That said, the potatoes here don’t actually seem to do much for the flavor besides adding an interesting texture. The bacon, though, doesn’t disappoint because bacon never disappoints, and the remaining components worked well, and everything comes at a very reasonable price for two people. Summary: Basically good.

So tonight our group had to find a place to eat within walking distance of the hard rock hotel, where we are staying. Mike, one of the charter members of team fat kid, said«hey, why don’t we go to basic pizza?» So that’s exactly where we headed. We were treated very nicely by security and our hostess seated us almost immediately. It certainly helped to have a reservation for our group of nine. The waitress was very accommodating if not a little spacy, But really, that just added to some of the fun in banter in ordering. We wound up ordering four pies; two mashed potato and bacon, one pepperoni and sausage, and a margarita. The pies were huge, overflowing the pan that they were served on. The cheese was high quality and the crust was perfectly fire-roasted and delicious. The only thing that was not quite offputting but certainly could’ve been done a little better, was the marinara sauce. It could’ve been a bit more spicy and savory. To be honest, it tasted a little like Campbell’s tomato soup. They could’ve also spread it a lot thinner on that fire roasted crust. A little too much marinara so the crust got soggy quickly. If I had one ask for basic, it would be to please improve the marinara out just a bit more and use a little less of it. All in all a wonderful spot to come and eat I will be back again. My last ask is, please have some cold monster energy ready to go the next time I come. Mahalo

What can I say about Bar Basic that hasn’t already been said? Well, they have good music at night, free slices during HH, a pool table, gr8 pizza!!, group reservations & even bottle service. The bartenders are always cool, helpful and just overall great. The crowd here is usually kick back not to over-crowded. I’m unsure if a dance floor breaks out later as I’m usually on to the next place after pizza grubbing but the music is good enough that I can see it happening. I only chill at the bar area, I think I’ve sat down once on the right side but it was very boring and just lame but the service was great!!!

Strong drinks, decent pizza prices. Thin crust, crispity crunchity perfection. Pizza is more crunchy than it is soft. Super thin crust. Makes you at least feel as though you are eating more healthy than regular crust pizza, until you have like 7 pieces of course. The pizzas are thin. The small is enough for two! Plenty! It is good for 2 – 3 people. The cheese only pizza is almost like garlic bread They use a lot of garlic on the pizza, it makes it tasty Seating is awesome with bar seating and lots of lounge/couch type seating Happy Hour drinks are available About 15 – 20 minutes for pizzas on a medium night. One large billiards table in sight. Tried the 10th Avenue(red pepper, eggplant, mashed potato, mushroom) and it was a… maaazing. Do it!!! If you are a bacon fan, then get the bacon + mashed potato pizza.

This was anything but BASIC pizza. I absolutely loved BASIC. The food, the vibe, the staff, the ambiance. Everything was so perfect for date night in SD! Half of BASIC is a lounge and the other half is a restaurant. I don’t often crave pizza, but I was on this summer night so we had to take advantage. BF really wanted to check out Petco Park while in SD so I Unilocaled pizza near by and found BASIC. It’s in a great location, walking distance from the park with plenty of street and lot parking available. There wasn’t a wait on Friday night but I can imagine on game days, they would get pretty busy. We both ordered brews and customized a LARGE pizza with pepperoni, basil, pesto and garlic. They have a few pre-selected pizzas that you can choose or you can opt to make your own. Two sizes: small or large. We were told a large would be good if we were really hungry and we might have leftovers. The pizza arrived in good time and we went straight to work. This has to one of the best pies I have ever consumed. Thin crust the way it should be, perfect amount of toppings and not overly greasy. We could not stop eating. We finished the WHOLETHING! Out waitress was super attentive to our drinks and needs. Prices were appropriate. This will be my first foodie stop when I am back in SD!

Tried this after a business event last night. Quite a different place for pizza. Music was quite loud, and often you could hear it being«cranked» as if you were over at a friend’s house. Pizza was rather like a Sicilian pie in shape, and cut in the same manner. Very thin crust and good ingredients. Sauce was a little sweeter than I prefer. Basic salad, small size, was enough for two people. Waitress was attentive and pleasant. Parking hit or miss on the street, or garage nearby.

Oh oui, merci Julie M !
