Ten years ago, I made the mistake of buying a lovely sofa that I then had upholstered with white fabric (live and learn). It started getting spots and snags almost immediately, and after 10 years it was definitely time for something new. I shopped around, and found plenty of fancy, expensive sofas nearby. I would have spent the money, but I loved the shape of this sofa and couldn’t find anything close. So I decided to look into reupholstering it.
First stop Unilocal,and after I read about RJ’s, I knew I needed to look no further. Kathy and RJ are very nice people, and I spent a lot of time there looking at fabric samples. Kathy’s got a great eye, and one of the first swatches she pulled was the one I went with.
I cannot believe how well the sofa turned out. Since they delivered it (free pickup and delivery), everyone who’s been to my house has told me how beautiful it is. With no prompting! It’s just amazing. And very rich looking. It looks much better than any of the other sofas I looked at.
I was so happy with the sofa, I then had them do two antique chairs (one in deep purple). Again, absolutely amazing work. And not only do they upholster, they do all of the rebuilding necessary. On those chairs, one of which was so old its seat was stuffed with horsehair. There was no surprise extra charge at the end – just a big smile and all of the details about what went into the project. Their upholsterer Frank is a true artist – Kathy says he’s been doing this work since he was 16, and that he used to do the high-​end upholstery work in Las Vegas.
Kathy and RJ are great people, great to work with, and their pricing is fantastic. I had all three pieces of furniture reupholstered for quite a bit less than it would have cost to buy a new sofa.

I brought in a pair of antique chairs the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to have the seat cushions rebuilt and recovered. I selected a fabric that Kathy had in stock and assured her there was no rush. Secretly I was kind of hoping the chairs would be ready for the holiday, since so many of RJ’s reviews mention how fast they work. Less than 24 hours later, Kathy called to tell me the chairs were ready! Her work is not only quick, but high quality and fairly priced. Highly recommended! Don’t forget to bring your checkbook: they don’t take credit cards.

Fifteen years ago we bought a beautiful red leather sofa. Our sofa saw my husband through football, baseball and basketball seasons usually in the prone position. The leather was splitting, seams stretched and cracked, and foam sagging, not to mention stains. We brought our cushions to Kathy and she helped us find an affordable match that just might work. Within six days we were told to come see. Well, it was a perfect match, new foam perked up the old cushions, the cracked welt gone. We no longer slump on broken down cushions and are very proud of our new sofa, just in time for football season… I highly recommend Kathy for her helpful suggestions, her caring attitude and speed of delivery

My wife was sick and tired of the beat-​up slip cover on an old family club chair. A local (SF) upholstery place seemed too expensive. Re-​upholstring is not cheap, but if you look at having that piece of furniture for the next 15 – 20 years, then it makes sense — especially compared to spending money on lesser quality new furniture.
We checked out RJ’S because of the great reviews on Unilocal,and we’re so glad we did. We saved a couple of hundred dollars just on the labor, plus Kathy did a great job recommending fabrics that our cat wouldn’t claw up. They did great, fast work and the cat hasn’t tried to use the chair as a scratching post. The chair looks as good as new. Kathy even gave us the left over material, which my wife turned into pillow covers.
We would definitely use RJ’s again.

I’m very happy with RJ’s upholstery, I had a custom headboard replicated to an existing headboard I current, y have at home with them and they had it ready in 2 weeks exactly the way I wanted it and I am very happy. Highly recommend this place.

I was in the neighborhood, so I decided to stop by the store. I had the chance to meet both owners, RJ and Kathy, and their upholsterer during my visit.
I mostly spoke with Kathy, and she is the sweetest! We spoke for about half an hour, and she took the time to show me around the store, give me some tips and advice, and even give me a hug at the end! I was shocked to see how genuinely friendly and approachable she was. She made me feel extremely welcomed and comfortable, and I appreciate business owners who take the time to talk to walk-​ins and share insight. Thank you! Will be back to visit!

Wow! This place was absolutely wonderful. The speed and quality of work was just superb. I had some cushions I needed reupholstered and they took great care of me. Kathy was very friendly and professional. The cushions turned out great!

I saw the great Unilocal reviews on RJ’s and decided to take my 12-​year old leather sofa cushions in for reupholstering. Kathy did an excellent job restuffing all of the cushions with foam and down and replacing the torn cloth fabric on the underside of the two seat cushions. Kathy is very knowledgeable and happy to make suggestions that will make your job come out the way you want it. The work was also completed promptly. The sofa now looks great and is as comfortable as when we first purchased it.

RJ’s has now done two projects for us – first, they recovered 8 dining room chairs and that went so well that we had them reupholster our couch. That went even better. Kathy spent hours helping us select fabric, and the couch turned out absolutely beautiful! Her advice was spot on, and the quality of the workmanship is excellent.

I have used the services of A Fabric Store to make a window seat cushion, decorative pillows, drapes and to cover a chair, ottoman and love seat. Kathy knows her fabric inventory and was very helpful in finding a fabric match that worked with the other colors and textures in my home. All of the work was done very nicely and at a reasonable price.

Kathy was so wonderful to work with. I had dreaded recovering some stools– the hassle of it all and picking new fabric was not appealing. Kathy was so helpful and made it so easy and pleasurable. I will do more home improvement projects using this San Carlos business. Quality at a fair price as well!

Excellent service Quick turn around. Great to deal with

Wow — what can I say — this place deserves an Oscar Award for Re-​upholstery. Kathy and RJ redid my Russian parents long, long sofa, a 1930’s love seat and just recently upholstered an old parlor chair used in dome railroad cars on the California Zephyr. The service, advice, personal touches from Kathy and RJ were most welcomed. I didn’t want to get rid of these sentimental furnishes from my parent’s era and now the living room looks like the furniture comes from the Getty or Rockefeller estates. What a wonderful job of finding the right pattern, color, not to mention the workmanship. They helped in picking up the furniture and returning to the house, not an easy task for an older third story home on a hill. I felt like I was treated like family, not as a customer — RJ and Kathy are wonderful people who take into consideration your needs and desires. Again, they both are masters in their fields — I invite anyone over to see my new living room — like my neighbors and friends said «Daniel — the room looks first class and the furniture is so elegant, comfortable.» I can’t say enough about Kathy and RJ.

Kathy was wonderful, pleasant, and helpful! She completed 3 pillows and a very odd shaped chair cushion for me. I found the prices to be very reasonable, the craftsmanship is impeccable, and the turn around time, amazing! My projects were ready in 1 day!!! One day! It wasn’t even a rush order! How often do you get that kind of service? I would definitely use RJ’s again and would recommend them to others!

Kathy is wonderful to deal with. She helped with picking out the right kind of upholstery for our needs and explained why it would work well with our space. RJ is great; he came over to take measurements and a really sharp guy — they obviously know what they’re doing.
Here’s my story: Kathy was going to make custom cushions for a little dinette area for us. 3 cushions and the extra material would go to covering a padded backrest. Every fabric I chose was either discontinued or there wasn’t enough but Kathy kept helping me find exactly what I wanted. When the cushions were complete, there was nothing but scraps leftover for the backrest. I brought the backrest in to their shop and she turned it into something beautiful! I was (and still am) amazed at how gorgeous it turned out! I posted 2 pictures (don’t look at my poor painting skills on the walls) and hopefully you can see the detail I’m talking about. It was 100% more than I expected.
Turn around time was quick, they are wonderful to work with. You’ll be happy you chose RJ’s Upholstery!
