Delicious asada and el pastor tacos served as I like them– with homemade corn tortillas, onion, cilantro, and lime. The refried beans were delicious, but I was disappointed that the charro beans were not available. My only negative comment would be that they do not have ice– only refrigerated canned drinks and bottled Mexican beverages. The young couple running the storefront were friendly and accommodating. The menu is not extensive, but we will be back! A great addition to the neighborhood!

Delicious! 11.99 for a pound of barbacoa – can’t beat that with a bat. Six of us ate our fill. Great service :)

The Harry Wurzbach/Austin Highway area has at least a dozen taco places but El Trompo may be my new favorite. Prices and selection are in line with what’s expected of a mom and pop taco joint in San Antonio but the quality is exceptional. Breakfast tacos start at $ 1.50 with 3 for $ 3. The most expensive tacos(barbacoa and other all meat tacos) are $ 3. Plates are $ 5 – 7. So, the prices are exactly what you’d assume. Portions, however, are generous. The selection is also standard. Plates are the usual mexican offerings you get anywhere else. In fact, the lunch menu is a little bit limited, but has the most popular items. For example, mini tacos, enchiladas, carne guisada, chilaquiles, tortas, burritos, hamburguesas, etc. What’s nice is their willingness to customize. For example, breakfast includes your basic ingredients(eggs, potatos, chorizo, sausage, beans, cheese, chicharron, barbacoa, etc.) but they’ll put them together however you want. In fact, there’s a build your own burrito option. It doesn’t list what’s included, you can add whatever they’ve got. What sets El Trompo apart is the quality. First, the tacos are generously filled. Way fatter than Taco Cabana or most of the cheap hole in the wall places nearby. Second, the flour tortillas are obviously homemade, fresh, and fluffy. Third, the ingredients are quality and they’re not taking shortcuts. For example, the chorizo is great, meaty, flavorful, and not so greasy. The bacon is nice and thick. The sausage is good quality and they use real cheddar cheese. Fourth, everything is well seasoned. There’s nothing worse than ordering al pastor, having it look all red and delicious, but then it’s bland. El Trompo’s pastor is everything you hope. Delicious! All of their dishes we’ve tried have been flavorful and freshly prepared. Finally, the salsas are great. Now, be warned, both the red and green are hot. The green is milder. The red uses dried peppers and is hotter. Both are well-spiced and super flavorful. However, if you don’t like heat, you want to be careful. Fortunately, because the food is good, you won’t need the salsa to make your meal taste good. For me, it’s nice to have salsa with a bite. Pro tip: call ahead for big orders. There’s limited seating so you don’t want to get stuck standing if you’re waiting on breakfast tacos for the soccer team, even though they’ll offer you a coffee while you wait.
