I’ve been eating here for years now and I must say this place is one of my favorite places in town. I’ve longed since moved away but every time I come to San Antonio I have to stop here. I recommend going in ordering some carne asada tacos with onions and cilantro add some salt squeeze some lime and add any combination of their sauce you can think of and there you have a delicious meal. It’s the simple things that make this place the best in the world.

I love nachos and they have good ones at this place real Mexican no Taco Bell lol. Going to a real Mexican restaurant was fun it also helps when your boyfriend knows Spanish and can understand the servers and knows about the food on the menu.

This place is fantastic and very authentic. We started off with chips and salsa, which was very flavorful and delicious. I had a chile relleno and it was delightful. The cost of everything for the portions you receive was very affordable. I will defiantly be returning!

Their tacos are made fresh & cannot rave enough abt their beans! My hubby had a delicious tripa taco(crispy & not greasy just the way he likes) & the barbacoa plate, with good portions & well prepared. Oh, & the flour tortillas are the best I’ve tasted from a taqueria(and I’ve been to several). Great place w/reasonable prices!

Not too bad, but not great. Service never came back once we ordered to see if we needed refills or how everything was. Salsa with chips had too much onion flavor for us. Ground beef on chalupa was too salty but the shredded chicken in the taco was PERFECT most and great flavor. I’d be back for breakfast tacos but not a sit down meal.

Used to go here all the time but the quality has gone down but the prices seem to have increased. I don’t think I am the only one that has noticed the change. It used to be hard to get a parking at lunch but not anymore. I bought a tamale and couldn’t even eat it. It was tough and couldn’t even get my fork though the masa. My daughter’s carnitas burrito was pretty fatty. Won’t go back. Extremely disappointed.

This place is awesome. I’ve been here for breakfast and lunch and it has always been fast, great service and the food is super deliciouso. I am from Miami and LOVE my cuban food and we don’t eat Mexican at all, so my husband I were scared to try this. This place is LEGIT and they have freaking awesome mini tacos. Their breakfast tacos are fantastic too. The women who work here are very friendly and very fast. I’ll be coming in here anytime now!

SATX’s best kept burrito secret! During the weekdays they run a burrito and coffee special for $ 3.50. So delicious! I’ll admit, I haven’t tried any of their other food, but you can’t go wrong with the breakfast burritos!

Good food, cheap prices, and good staff. The salsa is a bit thin, but good flavor. The asada is like most others I’ve had. FRESH ingredients, not frozen. The chips I don’t think are made, but that’s quite ok. I’ll definitely go back for $ 3 breakfast burritos when I get tired of billeting breakfast. Menudo was on the special, but didn’t try; I had to get take-out. Close, easy access to SAMMC, great choice!

Good, cheap and delicious. Authentic in the eyes of a gringo. Staff was nice and we got our good quickly. Good mix of military people and locals. One of the better places to eat around fort sam Houston In my humble opinions

This has quickly become our favorite Mexican food place since arriving to San Antonio. I am Mexican and usually don’t eat out Mexican food but the prices here are good and the food is great so when I am up for some comfort food I come here. My husband and I come here for their breakfast burritos and for lunch I’ve had their enchiladas. Always been satisfied with both the food and the attentive wait staff.

I have to rate El Charro 5 stars because it is the first Mexican food I eat when I come to town and usually the last place I eat before I leave. I love the Gringas here and they cost around $ 6 leaving me full and with leftovers depending on my hunger level. Their breakfast burritos are excellent as well. If you are close to Fort Sam or near the Harry Wurzbach gate, you should try El Charro at least once. Never been disappointed in nearly two years of eating there.

The food is good. I had flautas and a taco. Chips and salsa are complimentary. The salsa is gloriously hot. Beware if you don’t like spicy. The seating area is pretty small and music could be turned down a little but the experience was overall very good.

The wait staff is incompetent. We ordered 1 sweet and 2 unsweet teas, &3 of their breakfast burritos with Coffee for $ 2.99 specials. The tea was wrong, Coffee never came, and then the waitress had the balls to argue Withe and tell me I was wrong with my tea order. The so called manager was on her phone the whole time, and she argued with me as well. Then, after checking my burrito when I had a minute to Koln at it, the eggs were not cooked, there was no bacon, just bean and eggs and some disgusting reddish velveeta style cheese. We ordered bacon and egg, NOT bean and egg. Gross, don’t waste your time or money unless you enjoy getting ripped off.

Very clean, staff was very nice, menu great, prices great, and food was very good. I had the horchata, chile relleno and nopales. All were great! Will definitely go back! They have a lot of choices, so, I was surprised to not see mole enchiladas. They would make a great addition!

(June 10, 2011) Really good Mexican food can be hit or miss. I’ve had good, and I’ve had bad. There has also been VERY bad. But in my search for the best of the best, every so often I come across a real gem. El Charro is just that… a real gem. Located just outside the Harry Wurzbach Gate of Fort Sam Houston, this unassuming place doesn’t dazzle. But it sure impresses the palate. Negotiating the full parking lot is a challenge(keep in mind an overflowing parking lot is always a good sign). Luckily it’s on the corner of busy Harry Wurzbach and Morningside Lane, so patrons can park down the street, or next door in the parking lot of a certain Chinese restaurant which will remain nameless… which, by the way, doesn’t have a full parking lot(if that tells you anything too). Once inside, it appears that the owners crammed way more tables and chairs than the local fire marshal legally allows(another very good sign). Patrons range from uniformed Soldiers and Airmen to working-class stiffs, laborers, local law enforcement, and the occasional suit-and-tie lunch bunch. The ample menu contains the typical Mexican fare of bistek, fajitas, quesadillas, carnitas and gorditas, the requisite tacos, taco salads, enchiladas, and burritos, and a few other surprises including nopales y huevos, posole(only on weekends) and horchata(rice-cinnamon milk on ice). I settled on the carnitas – a plate full of seasoned shredded pork reminiscent of Hawaiian Kalua pork. The plate comes with shredded lettuce, tomato, two slices of avocado, and your choice of flour or corn tortillas($ 7.95). I also opted, at the urging of my lunching partner Carlos Smith, to have the horchata. I have never before enjoyed this Mexican beverage made with rice milk, cinnamon, and ice. Incredible only begins to describe the sweet, refreshing elixir that is destined to become my new favorite. Knowing full well that it doesn’t exist in Oregon, I’ll be spending a fair amount of time doing research into how to make it myself at home. Be forewarned: Lunch at El Charro is not for the light eater. Against my better judgment I ate the entire meal, and waddled back to the post feeling overstuffed, but definitely satisfied. Where El Charro doesn’t put a dent is in your wallet. All meals are priced around $ 6.95 to $ 8.95. I have to give my lunch, and the accompanying horchata a very satisfying 9.0. I’m sure we’ll be returning to this little hole in the wall numerous times.

Great hole in the wall taqueria. The décor is almost non exisistent which is irrelevant in this case anyway. Welcoming staff. Small seating area, maybe 45 – 50 tops when its packed. Great atmosphere. Most beverages are canned or bottled. The chips are made as needed and are served nice and hot. The house salsa while not the best I’ve ever had was still quite delicious. It was still full flavored with a bite. Most items on the menu are under $ 10 except for the steaks. I ordered the Carnitas Plate which came with rice, beans, pico and tortillas. The beans here are the stewed ranch style. They were wonderul, not overcooked and full of flavor. The rice was perfect and not too heavy on the tomato. The pork was nice and tender, lightly seasoned and flavorful. You have your choice of corn or flour tortillas. The sevings are generous and the price makes everything well worth it. Paid 9.98 for the plate, chips and soda. Not too shabby. I’d definately go back. Well done.
