The jalapeño chicken was sooo good! I was concerned that it might be too hot for my taste, but it’s just right. It only adds to the flavoring, and is not terribly spicy. It’s also boneless chicken! I was very happy about this, but I’m not a fan of dark pieces with bones. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I grew up on the east side, and surprisingly never tried this place. Now I’m near Sea World, and I’ll be back here every time I’m back in the ‘hood. I think they’re only open for lunch on week days.

Best chicken fried steak in town. Is it worth driving across town for a chicken fried steak. ABSOLUTELY… Great service, fantastic sides, worth it’s weight in gold.

I work at the AT&T Center and was looking for a place with good food at a good price on this side of town for lunch that wasn’t fast food. This place had good reviews and their Facebook page revealed today’s special was chicken and dumplings which I have been craving so I thought I’d give it a try. It was 1350ish and they close at 1430 so I called it in and they said I could pick it up through the drive thru which is pretty convenient since I’m on a lunch break. Brought it back and it is delicious southern home cooking. Chicken and dumplings, green beans, mac n cheese, and what looks like could be a toasted hamburger bun bottom as bread, but delicious besides. All very good and satisfying. I’d take this over Cracker Barrel any day. My only small gripe is that I could not find a full menu anywhere. I saw a pic of a breakfast menu on their Facebook page, but that’s it. I just happened to see todays post with the specials so I knew what I wanted. Definitely gonna be a regular here as it is good food, good price(under $ 9), and convenient to my place of work.

Walked in felt unwelcomed by wait staff like our business was an inconvenience for them. One waitress asked us for our drinks and never brought them then another waitress came and asked us our drinks. Ordered the jalapeño chicken which everyone was talking about and when she brought us the meal she said she wrote just chicken breast and that the kitchen was hecked right now if i want to send it back she could. I was like im on my lunch break i will just deal with it. Mash was cold mac was watery and spinach was left lacking. Nothing special

Definitely a diamond in the dirt. Probably the best chicken fried steak/chicken fried chicken in San Antonio. Better then Lulu’s in my opinion. I was a bit hesitant when I noticed I was the only colored person there but I didn’t run into any issues and felt quite comfortable quickly. Very Old-timey feel. The old lady at the front was very sweet and informed us all about the history of Radicke’s. The only cons I have is that its located out in the boonies of S.A. Definitely would go again, Try the Jalapeño chicken

You know that feeling when you enter into a real country restaurant? I don’t mean where the restaurant attempts to look country because they decorated with rusty signage, weathered cowboy hats and old boots. Well, walking into Radicke’s today for lunch felt like I was walking into a restaurant somewhere out in the country. The women coming to eat in this place weren’t carrying Gucci bags and the men didn’t have highlights in their hair. The patrons weren’t there to be seen but to eat good country cooking. Outside the restaurant, pick-up trucks outnumbered all other vehicles in their parking lot. Now I’d read the reviews about this place. I had to try it for myself. I met a fellow business owner for lunch there and we were both split about having either the Jalapeño flavored chicken fried steak or the jalapeño flavored boneless fried chicken. We decided to order both and split them between us. With your order, you get your choice of two sides. I chose fried okra and french fries. Now I’ve had my share of chicken fried steak in my time. This version has to be my favorite. Not because it’s the largest around but because it has a memorable taste unlike any I’ve tried before. Yes, I found the jalapeño flavoring generated a bit of heat for me but I buzz sawed right through my portion and a half portion of a jalapeño flavored boneless fried chicken as well. The fried okra was done right and the french fries were a solid contribution to the plate. I love being able to find a spot the locals know is good. I count myself lucky to be able to have authentic country cooking without having to drive hours to get there.

–Open 26 years –Great customer service –Everything made in house including pies –Used to be gas station. Bathrooms are outside. –Not open for dinner because neighborhood is sketchy at night and traffic is light. Info above were notes I took while I was dining at Radicke’s Bluebonnet Grill. Now let’s talk food… the jalapeño fried chicken… GETIT! The breading is light and crispy with a little bit of a kick. I would have preferred more spiciness. But overall, the chicken was moist on the inside and delicious! The bread biscuit that comes with it is huge, buttery, & exceptionally good. I also really enjoyed the jalapeño mac n cheese. Would definitely come back for these items. Looking forward to trying the pies next time.

Some friends brought me here to celebrate my birthday after I commented about seeing an article about Radicke’s in the San Antonio Express-News. Of course, I tried the Jalapeño Chicken Fried Chicken and the Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese. My second side was corn. The Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese was outstanding! Perfectly spiced, just enough heat, and very tasty. The Jalapeño Chicken Fried Chicken was, therefore, a surprising let down. Don’t get me wrong, it was good chicken fried chicken. The chicken was moist, the batter was crunchy, and the portion was definitely generous. But there was no spice to it at all. Where’s the jalapeño in the Jalapeño Chicken Fried Chicken? It was served with a cream gravy on the side, and the gravy was bland too. The corn was the biggest disappointment. It was simply canned corn warmed on the stove. You might be asking why I rated Radicke’s as four star if I was disappointed in the chicken and truly uninterested in the corn. The fact is that the Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese made up for everything else, and the only disappointment with the chicken was the lack of spice. It was very good otherwise. Radicke’s is definitely a diner atmosphere in a seedy part of town, but the Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese will definitely bring me back. Now all I have to do is find more Mondays-Fridays when I am off work between 10:30 and 2:30!

After leaving from a job interview nearby I decided to kill some time and have lunch here. Once I stepped inside I seated myself on a wooden booth. From inside Radicke’s looks kinda like one of those itty-bitty country, truck-stop diners you’ve seen in movies like Thelma & Louise and Dumb & Dumber(think of the infamous salt throwing scene). In a nutshell, think of it as Lulu’s or Tip Top Café but filled with truckers and travelers passing by leaving to/from S.A. instead of tourists and foodies, located off of a busy throughfare with big rigs passing by and next to hotels like Rodeway Inn and EconoLodge. I took some time to admire the bluebonnets painting on top of the register. Alas they had the radio tuned in to a country station that was playing Taylor Swift’s «I Knew You Were Trouble» song. Fortunately the music was played softly in the background so you can hear yourself think instead of loud like over at Cowboys Dancehall. My waitress came to my table, brought me a menu and asked«What can I get you to drink, hon?» I asked for a sweet ice tea. She brought me a cup of iced tea but it wasn’t sweetened like I requested. Maybe it was a misunderstanding because I misheard her say Radicke’s doesn’t have sweet tea. Hmm what kind of Southern-style diner doesn’t carry sweet tea? Oh well nevermind, I reckon I’m a grown man and I can sweeten my own dangum tea thank you very much! I looked at the menu quickly and decided what to order. I would’ve ordered their jalapeño chicken but I’ve been craving a chicken fried steak for a while and I was already tired of chicken so I decided to order chicken fried steak with green beans and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. As soon as my order arrived I dug into the mashed potatoes. To my disappointment, they weren’t hot enough. Green beans, OTOH, were hot and good. I cut into the chicken fried steak and took a bite. Radicke’s CFS isn’t falling off the plate nor is enormous like the kind served at Lulu’s or Bud Jones but that didn’t really bother me much since my appetite wasn’t huge. I squeezed some honey on the roll that came with my food. Waitress kept my glass refilled with more unsweet tea and I dumped more sugar in it til it was sweet to my satisfaction. Before concluding my lunch and hitting the road I decided to have a dessert, chocolate cream pie and it was satisfying. It was right up there with Earl Abel’s, Tip Top and Luby’s chocolate cream pies. If I’m ever around in the area next time between 10:30am-2:30pm I’ll probably return. I’m not sure exactly when next time will be since I don’t live in that part of town and I’m more of a dinner person than a lunch person. It’d be cool if Food Network’s DDD paid Radicke’s a visit so the publicity will give them more business and hopefully they can stay open longer. But for now only time can tell.

Have seen this place many times when driving to work and was curious to stop bc of the«Home of the Original Jalapeño Fried Chicken» sign. Brought my co worker yesterday and boy am I glad we stopped by. The hours are 10:30 to 2:30 and we arrived around 2:10pm. They were out of many items but they still had Jalapeño Chicken :) the portions are generous and the food was great! I had fried okra and macaroni w/cheese as my sides and my friend had mashed potatoes and broccoli cheddar casserole. Our waitress wasn’t very attentive towards the end of our meal(she sat with her back to us chatting with her coworkers) but it could have been bc it was closing time. The other employees were very friendly and thanked us for our visit as we were leaving. Didn’t try the dessert but will def have to next time.

Went to this little place earlier in the week for lunch after searching Unilocal for a place to dine after working in the area. Noticed that there’s a drive thru, and felt much more comfortable with that option rather than going into the busy restaurant during the lunch rush by myself. Unfortunately, the speaker for the drive thru doesn’t work, so I followed the guy ahead of me and simply pulled up to the window. While this is effective, it’s not expeditious, and you basically end up waiting in a line of cars for each individual order to be placed, made, and brought out. In short, it’s time consuming, but for whatever reason I didn’t care that day and this isn’t reflected in the star score. Per the previous reviews, ordered the jalapeño chicken fried chicken breast with sides of mashed potatoes and mac n cheese, which was served with the pepper cream gravy and a large roll. The meal is definitely down-home style so don’t bother going by if you’re planning to stick to your diet. I’m kind of a wuss when it comes to spice so was initially hesitant to get the jalapeño chicken but with as many positive reviews as I’ve seen of it, I had to try. I’m glad I did because the spice was manageble and the chicken was super moist. Large, plentiful portion, too. Mashed potatoes were pretty good and the mac was super cheesy– just like it’s supposed to be! Only downside was the gravy, which was fairly tasteless compared to everything else. Oh well. Worth a stop if you’re in the area craving something homecooked.

Put your hands on your hips. They could use some southern comfort padding, right? Radicke’s is totally the place to go for when you catch yourself fantasizing about Paula Deen or you know, a normal person’s hankering for butter and delicousness. It’s just easy to miss, what with the small, truck-stop style building. I would never have dared this store front, if not for one of my bolder co-workers. She’s rather skinny, and you know the stereotype for skinny-people taste in food, but she certainly outdid herself on this recommendation. The Bluebonnet Grill attracts a certain blue-collar clientele, which I think adds authenticity. I had myself one of their«famous» jalepeno chicken sandwiches with a cup of the tortilla soup special. With water and their complementary butter biscuit rolls, it was $ 7.03. Service was fast and the food was in front of us before we could say«chicken-fried». Next time, I’ll have to venture into their drool-worthy pie display or for a burger. The burger comes big. I’d say be prepared, but you should already be out the door by now.
