Military Plaza is an historic plaza next door to Main Plaza. It’s on the other side of San Fernando Cathedral, and is now mainly occupied by the street and City Hall. It used to be the center of San Antonio, and now has some nice park benches under some sprawling oak trees. Flowers and other great landscaping complete the relaxing atmosphere of this plaza. It’s a pedestrian friendly place, with crosswalks running down the middle of the street, causing all motorists to stop if you want to cross the street. It’s also a great place to chain up your bike, as there aren’t enough bike racks in Main Plaza, where most of the action goes on now. The Plaza dates back to 1722, when the military post was established here. After the revolts in San Antonio in 1811 and 1813, it was the site of many public executions. The Plaza was the site of lynchings during the Civil War, as well as a bustling market. It used to run from San Fernando’s to the Governor’s Palace. City Hall was built in the middle of the plaza in 1891.
