Place is closed. New owners named it something else. The only Las Carretas location now is the one on Perrin Central.

The food is consistently good. I have been eating here on and off for years and the plates come out the same each time. I mean that in a good way. Some places you go and like a dish then go back and it isn’t what you remembered. Las Carretas food does not change. Nice menu selection, a little more extensive(but not expensive) than most places. They make the standard SA Tex-Mex well, but excel at grilled meats. The Asada is amazing, as are the fajitas and«parilla» platters. Very good rice, beans and tortillas. Enchiladas could be more tender, but still they are tasty. Their breakfast plates are excellent. They try with the décor, but it is a little out dated and tacky. Who cares, the food is what you come for and it is great. The wait staff is generally good too. Oh, and they have a large case of house made pan dulce!

I will grant you it has been a while since we were at Las Carretas, and 7 years since we moved from San Antonio, but this family restaurant is as authentic and wonderful as any Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio. Run, don’t walk to get there. A couple of things to remember. English is the second language here, and the specials are really special. The salsa’s range from Gringo to to get the fire extinguisher, which I love. Don’t bring big bills, you won’t need them. What you will need is patience to get a table on Saturday or Sunday night. Oh yes, during the day this is a working man’s restaurant with the portions to fit a hungry guy. At night, families reign supreme but the portions are just as generous. Call first, since they open very early and also close earlier than you would expect! My wife and I have not found anything we did not like, but my son and I love to split the fahita’s. The ambience? Go for the food, and don’t look too closely at the floors, the food and staff are great.

Just had them cater our office 6th anniversary. The fajitas were a HIT! Everyone in the office loved it. The only reason I gave four stars if because I ordered queso and I ordered Charro Beans and they brought re-fried. But other then that it was all delicious! Will order from them again! They were on time to deliver the food. My family and I go there every weekend. Its a must try!

Been here several times for various events and dinners. Stopped eating here after my husband got food poisoning though! The place feels dirty and run down and my husband said he was pretty sure the meat that made him sick was old. All-in-all, there are so many other nice, clean places in SA. Skip this dive.
