On every trip to San Antonio, the must go to Mexican is Las Carretas. This is a family owned and run restaurant, which has strange dinner hours, I guess because the family needs some rest also. The food is wonderful, well spiced and authentic. I love the Caldo, I love the fajitas and every chicken dish that they have. For a real treat they have Coca-Cola from Mexico, where the drink is made with real sugar. I cannot rate the desert, I have never had enough room to eat any. The food is the absolute best in San Antonio, but use Google maps to find it.

Visit this hidden gem on a Saturday morning while a storm was taking place. Ambiance — clean and simple Service — way beyond fantastic. We wanted to try their horchata and she gave us a sample before ordering which ended up being very good! Our server was a little older and very sweet. I felt very taken care of. Food– oh my goodness. I wasn’t expecting too much since the prices were very low and I honestly just wanted some Mexican breakfast. I got the heoves rancheros and it was filling and delicious. Retried beans were well seasoned, along with the bacon and potatoes. The flour tortillas are homemade along with their salsa. I even had a concha as an appetizer since they have a little pan dulce section. My bf got the barbocoa plate and he couldn’t stop eating it. Thumbs up from him! I can’t wait to visit again and try their other dishes.

Back in the day when Las Carreras was on Naco Perrin and the early days of its current location, this used to be THEPLACE to eat. The food is still good, but the prices no longer reflect a good value and the service has gone way down. Some of the long time servers have become crabby and rude. I’m reminded why I stopped coming here.

One of my favorite places to get breakfast tacos. I have to eat at this place every time I make it back to my hometown. Have never been disappointed whenever I visit & always leave full.

Delicious, strong margaritas, the best Carne Asada in town, and great music blaring through the speakers make this place a phenomenal hangout. We checked out their bakery selections and they left to be desired. Even still, we’ll be back for more.

Bad atmosphere, disgusting food and even worse service. Went about two weeks ago around seven o’clock for dinner. The server didn’t ever bring the drink ordered for my toddler and took over ten minutes to refill my husband’s empty drink. As for the food, I have chicken mole at every Mexican place I go to… I suspect this mole sauce was from a can. It resembled dog food gravy to me. None of us ate much but we asked for a to go box anyway and when the server brought it she was brushing something out of it(hair, dead bug, I have no idea) but we threw it away as soon as we got home.

Food was great; service is fair but sweet. Wife got the chile relleno. It came with an enchilada that she said«stole the show for the plate». Daughter got the child’s enchiladas. She loved it. I got the puffy taco plate which was pretty good. A little different in that their beef has potatoes in it like picodillo. Very tasty though. Tortillas were awesome and fresh. Very authentic border\TexMex food. Coming into the restaurant was a bit strange. We came into the front of the restaurant but it is better to enter from back of it. Before I forget, Awesome selection in their bakery area.

Come for any of the soups, and you won’t be disappointed! They are full of huge chunks of zucchini, carrots, potato, corn, and chicken or beef(depending on which soup you choose). The broth is flavorful from all the vegetables they use, and not salty. They are served with hot, homemade tortillas that they make on site in their bakery. You also get a small bowl of rice served on the side. Perfect comfort food in cold weather!

Good Mexican food! Great place for breakfast or brunch. Their Chilaquilles plate is delicious. The flour tortillas are fluffy and light, potatoes and beans are flavorful and service is top notch. This place is definitely not fancy but the food is good and the menu is vast. I’ve honestly only been here for breakfast and brunch so I have no idea how the dinner menu is.

We stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The caldo de res was one of the best I’ve had. The crispy taco plate was decent. We usually don’t like to order steak at inexpensive Mexican restaurants because of the quality. At Las Carretas, we were pleasantly surprised. The steak was cut into bite sized pieces, then pan-seared with onions. The meat was tender and flavorful. They make good flour tortillas here and I loved the Mochajete sauce. Good food at great prices. They also have Mexican baked treats that are also pretty good.

Puffy tacos were fabulous! A companion’s pork chops were tender and flavorful, and shrimp a la mexicana was a little salty. The margaritas were potent and very good. We are headed to a football game at Heroes Stadium and found this place on Unilocal, and we’re glad we did! We did not partake of the bakery goods but might have to take some to go next time. Great little place with super friendly staff.

What a total DUMP on the outside with an equally crappy parking lot filled with nasty potholes ready to demolish my brand new car. I’ve also walked in the wrong door every single time that I’ve been here and had to be ushered to the correct part for dining. DON’T let this discourage you! This place rocks! I always get the same thing each time I come here and that is a steak quesadilla with rice and beans with a side of two beef fajita tacos with cilantro, onions and fresh lime. They aren’t as good as real Mexican street tacos, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find much better. One thing that I really enjoy about the beef fajita meat is that there isn’t a lot of fat involved. I hate when I go in for a juicy bite of meat and bite into a squishy, undesirable piece of fat. The Mexican rice and refried beans are pretty traditional and I’m pretty sure come out of a can, but that’s okay. Still good. My husband always gets the same thing; the chile rellenos with ground beef. He’s had in almost all 48 states and this was by far, his favorite. This is what really keeps us coming back. They stuff a huge poblano pepper with cheese and beef and it is wonderful. These people know how to cook I also really love the huge dessert rack they have. It includes delicious things like empanadas, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, etc. I haven’t tried any yet but I am absolutely looking forward to it. Las Carretas could use some new tables, flooring, a really good cleaning and better service but the food is almost unbeatable. This is a real gem and I look forward to hitting it up as much as possible before I leave San Antonio.

Sometimes those«hole in the wall» restaurants ARE worth a visit. This place is one of those. I know the restaurant needs a make up over but the food is as if «Grandma Lupita» is in the kitchen cooking. If you do make it out there or flying in and staying near by, I beg you to eat they’re breakfast tacos with flour tortillas. If you’re from out of town and not from Texas, than they’re breakfast tacos are going to make you buy extra for the flight home. They’re flour tortillas are hand made in the restaurant, I know cause the only flour tortillas I eat are the ones I make. It is rear for Mexican restaurants to make their own tortillas, too much labor. Not the best wait staff but you can see they’ll trying. You might want to ask for the check when you get your food, or you could be waiting longer for the check than the food. Food 8⁄10. Service 6⁄10.

YES!!! Found another gem. Had The Caldo De Res and a Carne Guisada taco and they were tasty.(They have Pan Dulce.) Can’t wait to try their other dishes too. I looked like such a newbie when I walked in, I went into the wrong door. The main entrance is on the south side of the building not the east. I saw the pictures on Unilocal and still made that mistake. The other entrance leads to their party room. The booths will not comfortably fit four people(elbow room) unless you look like Calista Flockhart. Also they’re old so the supports in the cushions are damaged and I looked like a child in a big chair with the table almost at my neck. So if you have four in your party, request a table. Bonus: They’re open on Sunday from 7am to 4pm.

The food is 5 stars the service is 2 stars — so I have opted for a 3 star review. This is the best Mexican restaurant in San Antonio — no doubt. Fresh Mexican pastries-Salsa to die for. Ask for the Mochajete sauce that is given only by request– it is a roasted red sauce for the spicy palate. Nothing is bad there– Friday fish special is a tender sauted fish with a creamy lemon butter sauce. The tortillas are fresh and tender, enchilada plates delcious! The décor needs a major update. it is old and outdated. Often the TV is blasting and the music playing at the same time– maddening. We have waited for long periods of time for our check and service. I picture this restaurant with a newly remodeled building, professional wait staff providing 5 star service to match its 5 star food. I am allowed to dream right? (Often, we get our food to go to avoid the frustration of bad service)

I Unilocaled so much to find a great tex-mex/mexican place before my day trip to San Antonio. Luckily this place was just a few minutes away from friends we were visiting. It’s nothing fancy when you walk in. There’s a mass selection of pan dulce on your right. Grab any seat and a waitress will bring you menus. The chips and salsa were good. Salsa was not too watery and had a good kick. However the chips here are cut more on the thick side. Still delicious though! BF ordered a bowl of the menudo. I ordered the el chef special that comes with a cheese enchilada, pork tamale, chips/queso, guacamole salad, and a crispy beef taco that I subbed for a puffy taco. It was rich and cheesy! The mexican rice was probably the best I ever had. The tortillas are so soft as well! Service was the friendliest! It was a great meal and so affordable!
