Best darn birthday cake I’ve had, here’s why: BIRTHDAYCAKE: The consistency of this cake is unlike everything I’ve had before. It is dense and moist, not fluffly or spongey like most cakes. I had a french vanilla cake with chocolate mousse on top. YUM. I would consider a wedding cake from here, certainly. What I was not excited about was the fact that this place is soooo quaint that there are times that they abandon the shop to go out on deliveries, so you could get stuck waiting outside. However, I’m all about small businesses, so next time I will simply call before I head over there. Also, this is directly across the way from the Friendly Spot, so if you need something sweet to bring to your beer-filled evening, FDbJ is the place to go.

I love this area so I’m not sure why it took almost 2 years to check this place out. I went for a quick cup of coffee and had a vanilla latte. Not bad. The place is cute and quaint but something is missing… I cant put my finger on it. There was local art adorning the walls(not very well hung or presented but I appreciate local art). I think maybe they should have some antique chairs and tables with some color/texture and this place would be transformed. I loved the coffee, Joyce seemed very pleasant but my whole experience was kinda… eh. Hope to go back soon and re-evaluate.

This quaint cupcakery is within walking distance from a lot of the downtown hotels. We were craving some sugar, looked it up and were soon on our way. I love the tables they used, which were mosaics of San Antionio attractions. Joyce has a large assortment of coffee drinks as well as sweet things. We were there a little late in the day and it looked like a few cupcakes were sold out. My carrot cake was pretty standard, but my girlfriend got an orange cupcake which was unique and delicious. The cupcake obviously was made with Tang(remember those commercials from the 90s??) I wish more places would make cool, different cupcakes like the orange variety. I also ordered a mocha which definitely needed some more sugar. So in summary, I’d go back for the cupcakes and probably not the coffee.

This little coffee and cupcake centered café is right across from the ever popular Friendly Spot on S Alamo. If I remember correctly, I popped in to get hot chocolate one winter evening since Friendly doesn’t have it. I saw the cupcake case and have made it a point to stop by whenever I am in the area. Joyce’s boasts a wonderful variety of cupcakes that are perfectly textured and feature soft and creamy frosting. I find it rare to taste frosting that isn’t tooth-achingly sweet. When I had the banana cupcake I was completely blown away, the frosting tasted like banana pudding and I ate every crumb and smudge. I have sampled many, many others but the banana stand out as my favorite.
