One of the best brunch spots in SA! This place truly embodies the farm to table concept. Their food is fresh and light but filling. I had the the ricotta pea toast and it was absolutely amazing not mention oh so pretty! It came of a piece of toast(not too thick) the flavors of the herbs complimented the ricotta just right. For my drink I had the Rosso it had elderflower which I’m a big fan of so of course I loved that too. If you’re in SA Alamo heights area stop by.

So here’s a quick breakdown of my experience at Folc: Exterior of the restaurant seems less than impressive. It’s set in a sort of strip center, and the large sign exclaims BRUNCH as though it is the only thing they offer. I went for dinner, but I have heard good things about their brunch, so maybe I’m missing out. Anyway, once inside, things improved. The inside is quite small but cozy. Our service was fantastic. The server was on top of things, explained the menu items and the restaurant philosophy, and was helpful throughout the meal. Food items came out promptly. Service was definitely a highlight. As for the meal, we opted for the pea toast, since it’s become quite the legend around these parts. We also went with the crab toast and the gnocchi(sausage on the side). The pescatarian/vegetarian dishes are somewhat sparse, but they still have some quality selections. The actual sizes of the meals were appropriately sized and I felt like I got a good meal out of the price. My party and I split all of our dishes down the middle so we could try a little of everything, and it seemed to be a good idea to order all three items in order to get a full tasting. As for the taste, everything was pretty good. Nothing out of the park outrageous, but I left satisfied and felt like I got a good experience of the menu items. So overall, although I wasn’t wowed, I had a pleasant dinner with good service, good company, and good food. Nothin’ to complain about here.

Surprised to see so much negativity about this place. I went here the other night after a super disappointing experience at another restaurant, and my night was turned around. Our server, Gino, made the night memorable. He was knowledgable about the menu, attentive, and very friendly. We got the restaurant week menu which was amazing. The lamb burger was slightly on the dry side with not a ton of pizazz but everything else was awesome. One of the courses was the kale salad with green goddess dressing. I’ve never in my life asked for«extra salad»!! So yums. Finished off with the most silky ice cream, one of the better dining experiences we’ve had as of late. Can’t wait to try brunch!

Drinks were fantastic. Pea toast was wonderful. Schnitzel was ok. The bread that the lamb burger and chicken was served on was hard as a rock and inedible. The fish on the salad had the consistency of mashed potatoes, but the rest of the salad was delicious. Another frustrating SA dining experience.

I came here about a month ago with a friend for dinner. I don’t think the prices are too bad, they aren’t expensive but it’s not cheap either. The portions are slightly small for what you buy, I think they’re trying to go for a tapas feel? Anyways I got the pea toast since everyone talks about it. It was definitely very tasty and very salty but in a good way. I also ordered the crab toast and it was really lacking flavor of any kind. I wanted it to be warm or toasted at least and it was cold and mushy. The gnocchi was delicious, my friend asked for the sausage on the side(bummer) BUT it was still really really tasty. The ambiance is supposed to be trendy but it just seemed plain and boring. There is nothing that catches your eye when you walk in, the décor is «rustic”-ish but was just boring. The lighting is too dim, making if feel like it’s fine dining but it’s not and it’s located in a strip mall so it still feels like you’re within a strip mall inside the restaurant. I wanted to really love this place but looking back there was just nothing crazy special about it which is disappointing, since it’s held so highly among foodies as a great place to go. Maybe brunch is just the best time to go here?

We enjoyed our first brunch as a married couple today at folc. We were left speechless… we ordered the Dutch baby– grilled pound cake — and the biscuit sandwich with pork belly. So many sweet and salty flavors bursting in your mouth! … AND Our service was excellent. Cool spot, we will be back for more !!!

Okay, so just to quickly sum it up; my experience at Folc was simply lame. The food was lackluster, the drinks were mediocre at best, the service was lacking and atmosphere was downright uninspired. Now; a bit more detail. We went out to Folc with a group of 6. When I immediately stepped in the door, I was at my table. No entry space, just dining space. Also being right at the door led to the lovely smells of the smokers in the parking lot. This facet could obviously change rather fluidly during the course of an evening depending on other diners being smokers. Though it was definitely present during my dinner and was very much unappealing and unappreciated., This ties into my complaint with the atmosphere… There was a large party in the adjacent dining space, so maybe that area is nice. However, the main entry/dining room was pretty boring, though did offer a panoramic view of the parking lot. The Mrs and I were some of the last to arrive in our party, though the waiter was at the table when we sat down. Despite this, we were not asked for our drink order until his next return, like 10 minutes later. He seemed a bit annoyed only 5⁄6 were present in our group to be honest. Or, maybe he was just busy. Either way the server had a noticeable haste about his that was initially off putting. When I finally did get my drink(rye old fashioned, which I order everywhere to set a benchmark of the bartender), I was disappointed that I received a burboun old fashioned and even further disappointed that it was just simply not good. Between the Mrs and I was ordered 3 other drinks off their signature drink menu. They were all small, overly complex and just really not good. To be completely frank, I felt as if the drinks were being made by some sort of novice bartender that fancied themselves a «mixologist»… I was thoroughly let down in the drinks category. The food was not much better. At our table we had the quail dish, the charcuterie plater, the sirloin, a steak that took two tries and like 90 minutes to get done correctly(was ordered medium, came out damn-near well done), and like 3 or 4 other dishes that were forgettable enough that the bowl of fried fingerling potatoes well outshines them. Essentially we were there to all share small plates and try out a good portion of the dinner menu. I did not care for any of it, really. I was also totally disappointed with my sirloin plate. The taste was bland, the meat was overdone and I felt like the plating was ugly. I mean, it looked like they tried, but it was just not an attractive dish of food. And don’t get me started on the abomination of a deconstructed apple upside down situation we got at dessert. The description read well, and I was hopeful the experience would end on a high note. Alas, it did not. Again, ugly plating, a wild array of flavor and a general feeling that someone in the kitchen was just beginning to work with the concept of deconstructing a dish. All said and done; given my personal experience, I feel like my friends and I would have benefited from taking our time, money and stomachs elsewhere. Silo was what I personally compared this place to and Folc got stomped. Hard. With equivalent expense; I have had a better drinking, dining and service experience CONSISTENTLY across multiple visits to Silo. My recommendation would be that you should skip Folc; there are simply way better dinner options. However, if you’re looking to spend a lot of money to be more or less underwhelmed, then this is totally your place! Maybe it was an off night, but for what we spent and what we went in expecting, everyone in my party genuinely let down with the experience. Oh dang, and I forgot to mention the 90 minute steak for one of the people in our group. It took twice as long to cook something half as much! And the waiter… The waiter came back to get a description of how our friend wanted his steak, a standard and commonly held description of a medium steak was made and then we didn’t see the waiter again for almost 45 minutes. To the point the our friend simply asked for the meal to be boxed for to-go. it was a fail in both service and on the part of whomever initially cooked the steak.

Went here for dinner. Fun menu. Small portion options to try many items with friends. Beautiful presentation of food. Was on the fence with the charcuterie board could have done without. Bibb lettuce salad was great !! Green peas toast was different but I would order again. Parisian gnocchi was amazing !!! Usually not a big gnocchi fan but this was delicious. Nice intimate setting with a bar connected next door. Ordered a bottle of wine and there was no way to keep chilled at table… waitress would bring when necessary.

Had brunch here once with a friend. It was a bit underwhelming. Rumor has it the chef at FOLC came from the infamous fig tree. So I was intrigued and paid a visit. Restaurant was small and the location didn’t give much of the«brunchy» vibe. We tried a steak dish and the pea flower toast. Steak was dry and had little flavor. When they learned about it, they were very apologetic and took it off our bill without us asking. The chef himself came to talk to us. That deff says a lot about a restaurant. It shows that they truly care about their customers and want to deliver a great experience. Kudos to that! I must say the pea flower toast was absolutely fabulous! The presentation was remarkable. It looks so pretty and tastes equally impressive. The peas were so fresh and you could taste the sweetness of the nature. Highly recommend! Overall, FOLC has great potentials. I hope they do well.

Amazing service. Amazing food. What else is there to say?! We went for brunch and we were not disappointed. Delicious mimosas. Scrumptious vegan bread with amazing homemade preserves. I highly recommend it! We will definitely be returning.

My mom and I went for lunch and we’re really not impressed. I got the schwenk and mom got the schnitzel. The schwenk was way over salted. It tasted like cheap carne guisada with too much salt. My heart, stomach, and mouth were not happy. The bread it came on was nice but a little burnt, and the greens on top helped a bit. Mom’s schnitzel was good, the menu was a little misleading, when the second ingredient listed(I.e. Egg) is just a tiny portion of the sauce on top. The dishes don’t come with anything on the side, though I was sufficiently full, yet sick to my stomach upon leaving. The water was great, service good, and ambience okay. The room was freezing, and the only sound was the music the cooks were listening to. We were there in the early afternoon. Our meals cost about $ 10 – 12 each.

A very trendy place. Chalkboard signs that scream hipster hangout. Even more so with offerings like morels and pea shoots on toast. I think it’s very interesting and worth trying simply because the food really is delicious. Anything on toast is delicious. Well, except for the flowers. They were kind of bitter. Otherwise, I think the toasts have inventive flavors and are gorgeous. The fried chicken with chimichurri sauce is definitely worth the wait. Very moist and tender. The meat itself could have used more salt but I didn’t mind too much. I asked for some siracha for the chicken but they didn’t have any(that should be a staple everywhere people!) so they gave me coffee infused mayo. It was an incredibly poor substitute for siracha. Even for an adventurous eater like myself, I thought it was very weird. My brother got the lamb burger and I thought it was better than the chicken. The fingerling potatoes were so delicious! I splurged for dinner once and got the dry aged steak with marrow butter. It was really not worth it. I’ve definitely had better steak elsewhere. I would check out the place for the brunch options. Skip the steak and beef clod.

Had brunch with family this Sunday. Overall the food was fine but nothing was spectacular. I had their version of the eggs Benedict and the poached eggs were a little too underdone. My husband had the biscuit sandwich. I tried someone’s crab scramble and that was okay. I felt the food was a little under seasoned and it was not served hot. I would say it was luke warm. The buscuits were a little on the dry side and crumbly, The mimosa was delicious. We also tried the sweetbreads and those had such a unique texture. Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside– we had that as an appetizer. The place is relatively small and I don’t think they necessarily keep in mind the groups of parties coming in and where they should seat people. We were a table of 6 adults and they decide to put a table of 6 with two toddlers in high chairs with a third child running around right next to us even though there was a large table — on the other side of the room with no one around. Once the kids started wailing loudly– the experience was totally ruined– Most unfortunate. As I noted on my tip– the sister bar next to it serves brunch on Sundays so if you want a more adult experience you may want to do that instead. Overall– that was our experience and I am glad I tried but next time it will be brunch next door.

The food is very interesting and you can tell the owners and chefs take a lot of pride. First of all the service was great, I really felt like we were VIP. The bartender even made me a special cactus pear virgin cocktail for me since I can’t drink alcohol. We got the ricotta and peas… highly recommend it. We also got the porchetta with roasted okra — best okra I’ve ever had. It shouldn’t be fried, as I’ve usually had it, roasted is the way to go. Everyone’s entrees looked and tasted great. Hubby got the quail with peach glaze and pork belly… AMAZING. If my lobster wasn’t as good I would have been very jealous. I still was a little bit. No dessert this time since we had a movie to catch, but we will definitely be back!

Folc had been on the radar for awhile, and I was able to stop in for a leisurely lunch. The space is an open kitchen concept with a menu of fresh, seasonal ingredients. To begin the service was extremely knowledgeable of the menu, and gave realistic descriptions of the items so that the best choice could be made. The drink menu consisted of an array of mixed cocktails and wines by the glass. I didn’t see any beer choices or a beer menu, but maybe I missed it. To start I had some kind of fresh cocktail that had ginger and champagne syrup. It was so refreshing. The pea toast was a nice mix of spring peas and ricotta on a buttered thick bread. Don’t order this on a first date though, as it’s pretty difficult to eat it gracefully. The main item was a deep fried southern chicken with a base of chimichurri sauce, which really gave it more of an Indian flavor. It was a new take on fried chicken that I would gladly try again. It was served with sliced new potatoes with sea salt. A dessert consisted of a white chocolate mousse with toasted merengue. It was light and fresh and made me forget about the thousand calorie fried chicken that I indulged upon. While a huge fan of Folc, I must point out that there are not any lunch specials or prices. Get ready to throw down dinner dollars mid-day. I’m not really in a position to do that all of the time, so it would be nice if Folc could pare down portion sizes at lunch and maybe offer a small special menu. Then it would be easier to patronize more often.

I love this new spot and will definitely be back again! I went for brunch with a friend and ordered their variation on eggs Benedict. My friend got the biscuit and egg sandwich(their biscuits are great) and then we shared the crab scramble and a carafe of grapefruit mimosas because we’re actually out of control. Everything was delicious and satisfying and cooked perfectly. The only drawback was that, and perhaps this is stinginess and naïveté on my part, our mimosa carafe seemed mighty small for what we paid. I know that mimosas are a huge ripoff anyway but the only thing that I could suggest to this place is: hey, have a brunch happy hour or something! Other than that, you are beautiful and perfect, and don’t change a thing.

This is a breakfast review only. I stumbled upon this place on the way to Mary Lou’s … completely opposite of this place but I saw the sign that said BRUNCH and I said«That place looks like they have way better coffee than Mary Lou’s so lets go there.». I loved my first visit because I love shiny new things, french press coffee and a good indie alternative mix playlist. I ordered the griddle pound cake and the biscuit egg and cheese. The biscuit was nothing amazing and I wasn’t happy about it being cold. I prefer my biscuits steaming hot. Once I got to the griddle cake I quickly forgot all about not being happy and for the next week wouldn’t shut up about this place. On my next visit I decided to stay away from the biscuit and go with the sandwich again but have them put it on toast and ask for bacon … uh bad idea. I learned that I am not into a chunk of bacon fat on a plate. The Gory Rory cocktail made up for the food and the again my favorite jams playing in the background kept me smiling. I will go back to try lunch but it will take someone that agrees to pick up the tab to get me to go back. I also will just order the griddle cake and probably not venture out which is sad but it is too expensive to not be happy.

Loved the duck terrine, peas and toast, and of course the strip and bone marrow was excellent. I ordered the chicken liver as well, it had really great flavors and a refreshing cucumber jam. Everything was exquisite and service was good. Would definitely go back again

My wife and I dined here for brunch. We ordered the peas herb and ricotta toast, the crab egg scramble with toast and fingerling potatoes, the griddled pound cake, a biscuit and a Gory Rory. Our favorite would have to have been the crab egg scramble. The eggs were fluffy and there was an ample amount of fresh crab meat. The peas herb was light and fresh another favorite. The biscuit was nothing special and seemed as if it had been sitting around a bit. The pound cake was excellent. Crunchy on the outside and moist in the middle. The Gory Rory was sweet and delicious, and a nice addition to the meal. Service was prompt and courteous. The atmosphere is trendy and hip. The meal /experience was excellent, but didn’t quite justify the price. We ended up spending $ 56 for what is essentially a scrambled egg, toast and muffin breakfast with one drink, a dessert and a side item that we split. However, I feel this place still deserves a strong four stars. Brunch is served both Saturdays and Sundays.
