If you haven’t been to Espada Park in a few years, or even a few months, you just might not recognize it any more. So many renovations have been made including new areas for picnicking, new trails, as well as attractions for kayakers such as chutes and random areas with water falls. We went out this past weekend and were so intrigued at seeing people BBQ-ing, skaters skate boarding, people on foot and on bikes having the time of their lives, pets on parade, and kayakers having fun in the river. There was even a tent set up where you could rent a kayak! I had to rub my eyes and ask myself if we had actually transported ourselves to a park in Austin by mistake! Fortunately, we were still in San Antonio and were surprised to see how people from the neighborhood and surrounding areas were taking full advantage of this new and improved park. There’s something for everyone! You could literally spend the entire day, if not exclusively at Espada Park then most definitely in one of the surrounding parks, Missions, or other attractions in the area. Put down the iPods and video games, come out to the park, bring your family, get some fresh air and some much-needed family time together! It’s also a great place to go alone and reflect and possibly reconnect with yourself. I know I’ll be dreaming of Espada Park the entire work-week!

This park is extremely close to our house, and is a nice place to take a picnic lunch to. There are several areas to eat at, clean restrooms, and a trail that goes on for seemingly miles and miles. It’s also tucked back a little away from the bustle of SE Military Dr. so the traffic and noises are at a minimum. If you live/work on the Southside, take a part of an afternoon, and enjoy some outside time at Espada.

First, I tried to update the address but Unilocal takes forever to make the changes — it’s off SW Miltary b/t South Presas and Roosevelt. So this is one of my favorite trails to bike at — the trail is a good length and if you go far enough you actually run into Mission Espada(I usually turn back around once I hit it). It does go under 37 which looks kind of shady at first but it’s fine, it quickly leads back to open trail and I’ve never had any problems. Another plus, there’s always plenty of parking and it’s pretty easy to find. PS I never do but occasionally I see ppl fishing in the San Antonio River that runs adjacent to the trail. Not sure what that’s about but just FYI.
