Second venture here. Excellent Italian sub, I will be ordering this again for sure! I like the small shop vibe and the people here are very nice!

Don’t let the outside scare you. I was so impressed that this little«hole in the wall» shop had gluten free bread. I had a chicken salad sandwich on gluten free bread and I won’t lie. I was a tad nervous to try it. I really liked it and would definitely have it again.

Funky little place that has been around for awhile. Totally off the beaten path and has it’s regulars. They do daily specials and has an outdoor eating area. The sandwich I had was okay, but I could have easily made at home. My husband’s was a bit fancier, but didn’t come on the the type of bread advertised. Sandwich, drink, chips will run you about $ 10. It was an okay experience, but I’m in no rush to go back.

I’ve been stopping into this quaint and humble café for over 7 years and not much has changed and I absolutely love that. The priority is the sandwich but the equally delicious and nostalgic dessert items come in at a close second. Desserts like Texas sheet cake, hummingbird cake and chess pie are just a few(there is no less than 8 – 10 desserts any day of the week). My favorite sandwich is the California cheese. It’s always amazing(cheddar cheese, Swiss, sprouts, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, dill cream cheese spread on sourdough). Don’t let the tiny metal shack detour you. It did me for awhile. I’ve more than made up for the bad judgment call. I’ve sent them lots of business since then.

Not what I expected! I could have made this sandwich at home. Sliced bread mustard roast beef lettuce and tomato… nothing special at all!!! Plus it was all rush hurry up and pay not even a thank you.

Now, I don’t usually review food from restaurants because I feel that food is a pretty subjective thing to deem good or bad, but with that being said, holy s4! t this place is delicious! I love nothing more than a good sandwich, and this place surely delivered. I ordered their Southwest Turkey Melt, which apparently is their most popular item, and in all honesty I can’t remember the last time I had such a delicious sandwich. The staff is friendly, the food is great(and cheap), and the atmosphere is unique(it appears to be a converted shed which, while that may seem off-putting, is actually pretty cool). Luckily I work just down the street, so I will definitely be in there more often. The Brown Bag Sandwich Shop just gained another regular customer!

My first time eating here was in October had a great Pastrami, came back in December ordered the exact same sandwich and the meat was not the same. First time it was 100% beef, second time was processed. I asked the ladies at the counter, showed her the pictures of the first sandwich and she told me they don’t buy the same meat every time. Very disappointed, will not go back due to the inconsistencies.

Stopped in after a recommendation from and friend, first thing I thought was…“what smells good?” Ended up being the fresh sautéed onions and beef for the daily special… I ended up going with a club sandwich that was made to order… go for the jalapeño bread… you won’t be disappointed… my sandwich was filled with grilled turkey, hamand cheese, lettuce and tomato. I decided to end my meal with the homemade lemon cake. if you like sweets… everything is homemade. I’d recommend to anyone who likes custom made sandwiches and homemade sweets.

I’ve been coming to this place for weeks now and all I can say is that this little place packs a big taste. I know what your thinking… They are just sandwiches. Well you would be wrong. Each sandwich is expertly hand crafted and made to perfection. You can easily see how much these ladies care about their customers. This place is outstanding and I’ll be back time and time again. Also, try the corn soup. Its guaranteed to make you fall in love with this place from the first taste.

This spot has so much potential. Located down the street from an industrial area(hello built in lunch crowd), cute chalkboard signage,(relatively) low prices, all in a sweet repurposed cottage setting. And yet they fall so short. Menu is simple sandwiches and a daily soup, with a case of homemade desserts(mostly square cake slices with sloppy frosting, like a school bake sale). When I say«simple» I’m not being twee, I mean they literally take a bag of sliced wheat bread, a pack of shaved turkey from the deli, and assemble. The slightly-careless kind of simple. But the employees are polite. Opted for the pimento cheese sandwich, add ham. Somehow this was charged as the ham and cheese sando(already higher priced due to the protein) with an add-on fee for the(substituted, not extra) cheese that same to $ 7. Sandwich was fine with a generous portion of meat, but this could be greatly and easily improved with a fresh, locally-baked bread and making the pimento cheese in house.

The staff was nice, the exterior and interior were what we expected and really were hoping for a great sandwich from a local establishment. What we got was a pastrami sandwich that was unedible because it was so salty and the bread was nothing special. The meatloaf was more like a semi hard sloppy joe. Potato salad was a complete waste of time, it was dry and the potatoes were hard and it was tasteless. On a bright note the turkey club was apparently good. I’m a big fan at of eating at local sandwich shops and restaurants but this was not one that I will return to.

This was my second time visiting the shop, and both times were pleasurable. The food is as homemade as you can get and doesn’t taste like a chain. In my opinion, that is what really sets this shop apart from other sandwich shops. The charming service and a charming atmosphere will definitely keep me coming back. Today I had the southwest turkey melt– and the bacon sauce is uh-mazing! I can’t wait to try the different soups one day soon. My most important piece of advice? Don’t skip the homemade desserts! Good location and easy to find off of the 410/airport area.

Having grown up and spent much time in the Northeast part of town, it is a small wonder that I have never visited this place, which has been open for at least 15 years! After a recent coupon-inspired opportunity, my girlfriend visited, liked it, and talked about returning with me. This was my first chance to try out this quiet little fixture of Northeast SA. The Brown Bag Sandwich Shop is right off of speedy Wetmore Road just northeast of the airport, between Broadway and Wurzbach Parkway. The edifice is very unassuming and the inside of the restaurant is quaint, cute, and unpretentious. I noticed that there was a covered patio area outside, but I don’t know how comfortable that would be considering proximity to the airport. We were greeted within a minute of walking in the door and the courteous cashier awaited our order. Though they have a website, the in-restaurant menu had many more sandwich options. I opted for the chicken salad sandwich combo(the combo includes a whole sandwich, chips, and a drink) while my girlfriend had the egg salad sandwich combo. All sandwiches come on whole wheat bread, unless the customer requests a different type of bread like white, rye, or pumpernickel. To top it off, I decided to try the peach cobbler. I must make a quick note here of the desserts. There are a lot. From fresh baked cookies(they were featuring frosted sugar cookies in the spirit of Christmas) to cakes and pies to cobbler, they have a ton to choose from. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, I recommend trying something, even if it ends up being for carry-out. Everything looks handmade and the baked good samples they offer are tasty. Our food came out within five minutes. The sandwich was very nicely presented. Neat and clean; it was obviously not slapped together, but lovingly constructed. I did, however, notice that the bread was ordinary sliced bread that one could buy at the supermarket. I realize other fellow Unilocalers have noted this too. I don’t know exactly how to feel about this. On the one hand, the bread is soft and fresh and it doesn’t take anything away from the sandwich. However, I think that if they could somehow bake their own bread, it would definitely take their sandwich, and their business for that matter, to another level. Aside from the bread, I judged the taste of the chicken salad. Though it was different from any other chicken salad I have ever had, it was pretty delightful. What made this chicken salad different was that it seemed to be a mix of egg salad with chunks of chicken. While this might not work for some people, I rather liked it. It wasn’t overly salty or under-seasoned. It was well done. The chicken salad was topped off with what seemed like very fresh bibb lettuce leaves. My girlfriend really liked her egg salad sandwich as well. Tasty and seasoned just right. After enjoying the fresh sandwich, I turned my attention to the peach cobbler. I have had cobbler made in different ways, some with a crispy crust and others with a softer, doughy crust. This cobbler fit the latter. The dough was soft; while I like a crispier crust for pie, I prefer a softer crust for cobbler. This did not appeal to my girlfriend, who also added that the cobbler would have tasted better warmed up. I thought it was just fine at room temperature. The peaches were obviously of the canned variety, but the cobbler spices and sweetness were good. While this cobbler may not be favored by all, I liked it. I like this place. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid-back, like you just walked into your aunt’s kitchen for a quick and fresh sandwich lunch, and the service is friendly and quick. I think that having sandwiches featuring scratch-made bread and using real, rather than canned, fruit in the desserts would do great things for this place. I do recommend trying this place if you are close to the airport, especially now that they offer breakfast in addition to their lunch. Come try out the Brown Bag and see why it has been successful for over a decade and a half.

Loved it great fresh food and way more affordable than Subway. 3 sandwiches, 2 bags of chips yummy potato salad and 2 cookies all for $ 20 We will be back. Only regret is that I never went sooner, I live in the area and never stopped in because of the location, and we will definitely make this a weekly lunch spot!

When a co-worker brought me here for lunch one day I was a little worried when we arrived. It basically looks like a shed from the outside. My nerves were quickly eased by the pleasent staff and the smell of goodies. The service is always pleasent and fast. The food is all homemade and in generous portion. It’s a little pricy for a sandwhich shop but the desert makes it all worth it.

Small? Yes. But the service is personal, sandwiches, soups and desserts are homemade and they have daily specials. It’s definitely great for a quick bite! Trust me… get a dessert. You won’t be disappointed.

If you are expecting a full service deli, with toaster ovens and endless choices of breads, then don’t come to the Brown Bag. It is a small business that started«out in the country»(back then) and has stayed near the airport for over 20 years. The kitchen and store front are small, but over time they have expanded an eatery and outdoor seating area. Framed artwork that resemble what ued to hang on my grandparent’s walls and country music completes the ambiance. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich, thinking best of both worlds, and specifically asked for it to be warmed up. My first impression was that the bread could have been better. When I order a sandwich from a local business, I don’t expect them to use the 69 cent bread that I can buy at the local grocery. However, this aside, the sandwich was quite tasty. The mayo was not too heavy, and the leaf lettuce and tomato were fresh. In addition, the meatloaf was savory, with sweet tomato sauce and jalepenos, and was quite flavorful. My only want was toasted bread, even if it was the storebought kind. All in all, I say it is better than going to a chain. However, small changes could bring back more customers.

Now this is definition hole-in-the-wall. A truly tiny(like 300 sq feet for the main ordering area) structure, this little sandwich shop probably does not get a second glance when being driven by. I came here with a friend that said it was great. Hmm, I wasn’t all that impressed. First off all, the building is a bit scary, like it could collapse at any moment on your little sandwich-eating head. Secondly, I do like a lot of meat in my sandwich, but it looked like they took a whole package of turkey coldcuts and put them between two regular slices of white bread. Nothing at all what I expected. I could have made the sandwich at home and probably liked it better. I will give them props on the freshness factor, but eh, nothing special.
