Asel’s use to be a pretty good store but like many other small businesses they are being crushed by the internet and by bigger stores. On my most recent visit everything looked old. Some items hadn’t been handled for so long that they had a bonus layer of dust. Many things were being sold at the MSRP, so seemed shockingly overpriced. Asel’s most positive attribute is it’s employees who are art geeks. They know the products and can guide you well, even if they have a tendency to over explain.

I love to paint but it gets expensive. Luckily, Asel Art Supply is here to help me with my habit. The selection here is small but good. Their shelves aren’t extensive but what they carry is quality and they are knowledgeable on their product. I’ve been a customer of Asel for years. I began shopping there when I was an art student at SAC approximately 100 years ago.(Or maybe 10. Can’t count.) The prices are super affordable and they have great sales. Especially if you’re in the market for canvas or brushes, this is the place to go. In fact, I’ll venture to say you should never buy something full price here because it’s safe to assume what you want will be on sale if you’re patient. If you happen to be an art student, pick the brains of the employees. They will help you with your projects and even offer ideas and suggestions that could make your piece even more spectacular than you originally envisioned. The best part about shopping here is: its locally owned. And because of that, if you can’t afford what you need and you’re particularly persuasive, you can probably work out a deal. The people here value art as much as they value making a profit. So, bottom line, if they believe in what you’re trying to create you will be able to buy what you need in your budget. That attention is so important in the art world. I love shopping at Asel because they support the San Antonio art community and will do their best to help you get what you need to complete your project at an affordable price. And they work out amazing student specials to accommodate the projects of students around town. Even though I’m no longer a student, I do my best to support this business in hopes to repay the kids at SAC who are currently wearing the worn out shoes I wore a few years ago. This is a great local treasure and I highly recommend you supporting them!

I love coming here for my art. The employees are really helpful and can find anything you’re looking for. The prices aren’t that bad. I really like coming here because it’s a lot more personal then going somewhere like Michaels where there’s just isles and isles of stuff you don’t care about. A lot of the time they have good deals going on because the store is located right across the street from SAC so you’ll find lots of students in here as well.
